It’s the one piece of gear I’ve owned longer than anything else. I’d say about 10yrs at least. With this set up I’ve got the bass running into the Basswitch. The VMT is going into the little yellow box - the 2020s - then out of that into the HL comp. These are in the ‘always on’ serial loop and are both always engaged. Using the boost on the Basswitch really does add an extra bit of grind to the VMT sound (I’ve the VMT set for a pretty low gain) and it makes an already great sound even better! It basically gives me a great always on sound and then adding the boost just gives it that extra oomph. Of course this is probably heavily influenced by the LBA2020s which is just a transformer in a box and it really starts to add its mojo with some gain going into it. To my ear between the drive and comp is where it’s sounded best and the foot switchable Basswitch boost really starts to fatten it up. The signal comes out of the Basswitch and into the AO then the Funklite. This runs into a Micro Thumpinator hidden underneath the board which goes into the Hotone Cab IR. From here it’s DI to the desk and a Thru to the amp. I did have the VMT and HL running direct to the amp but adding them to the loop of the Basswitch really ‘cleaned’ things up. Hard to explain exactly, maybe it’s having that serial loop or possibly due to the transformer in the Basswitch but whatever the reason it’s a cracking sound for my tastes. Then you have the 4 band eq with two bands of semi para mids which allows for that additional bit of tone shaping and it’s a very musical Eq. I’ve yet to hear an onboard which rivals it. I feel very spoilt and while I don’t really need much in the way of effects I’m super happy with this combination. I have a few other drives I’ve experimented with but these work well especially stacking the VMT into the AO!!😌

Drives/Distortions/Fuzzes through amp DI - Beat the fizz?

I was looking at one but read that they couldn’t. Ironically I use a DG 410/api preamp as my main ir -

does the element only use DG ir or can it be loaded with 3rd party ones too? -

I’ve got around this by using an OmniIR cab sim. It’s the last thing in my signal chain and allows me to have a ‘thru’ to my amp if I’m using one and a xlr out to the desk. As much as I enjoy the sound of my cab this is the most hassle free option. Some venues might mic your cab but an IR loader might be the best option and there are many option for cabs where you’ll find something that works for you. -
One may argue finger style bass may not suffer the same fate…

The classic “Fender do something different” and folk either go mad +ve or -ve. If it’s not the look it’s the price or the concept or the fact that in 1986 you find a similar import… Carry on fellas…

Here’s my set up… Bass>Tuner>HPF>Basswitch (drive and comp in the fxloop)>Drive pedal >Filter>Omni IR cab sim The Basswitch is the ‘the brain’ and has the TRex (set to low gain) and the HL compressor in the ‘always on’ parallel loop. The other effects come after the Basswitch. It does have another fx loop but I prefer the sound of the drive and filter after the eq. This feeds into the Omni cab sim with DI out to the desk and I can run a line ‘Thru’ to an amp if I’m using one. On occasion I might run all this into my tube DI and send that to the desk. More recently I’ve been experimenting running the out of the tube DI to my amp as it has a really positive effect on the tone on account of the tubes and transformer. I’d best describe it as sounding like increasing the ‘bandwidth’ what one might hear using a pedal in 18v mode as opposed to 9v if you’ve ever compared those option in a preamp or drive unit. If I’m feeling lazy I’ll just use my DITTO tube DI box!

Lightning Boy Audio 2020S Transformer Pedal - *SOLD*

*Price includes U.K. shipping* Just got a slightly bigger board to accommodate a few of my always on pedals and that sees the Metro 24 up for sale. I do have some dual lock on the board but I’m happy to strip that off and supply two unused rolls of Velcro (one hook, one loop). The dual lock has kind been placed to suit my pedals some which were non-standard sizes and may not suit you or you could leave it on and fill out the strips etc. Your call if you buy the board! The board has been gigged and has the odd flake here and there but it’s structurally sound and a great size for folks who have up to a 6 standard pedals but want to keep them tidy and uniform. There’s some Dual lock underneath too which help a Cioks DC5. Needless to say the pictured pedals do not come with the board 😀
