I had a Super PZ5 for about 5 yrs which was my main gigging bass and I really enjoyed playing that one. I think the D Roc is such a great reimagining of a classic the same way their Super P is. I may have a cull and see what I can find used!

Should I get one of these in 4 string for my 80’s band 🤔 Stingray tones if needed. Solid slap tones if needed. Solid ‘middle’ tone if needed.
-
I'd happily own either style as I think it's a killer bass.

While I have a couple of options I don’t have too complicated a set up. I’ve been using a DG ADAM with my 80’s band (it’s compression, drive, eq and cab sim with the added bonus of a tuner) or a HX stomp using some ‘80’s’ sounds basically a GK style rig with some dirt and eq so it’s a one box solution. At the moment we’re still honing the tunes so it’s been practice room only to date. If I’m travelling light and doing iem only on my pub gig I can take either and it’s job done but if I’m gigging in my pub band and taking my amp I’ll bring my pedal board with tuner, comp, preamp/eq/DI (which sends a clean DI signal to the desk/iem) and out of the 1/4 output of that same pedal to some dirt pedals then on to my on stage amp. This lets me send a clean signal to the desk but have a bit of drive (or a lot of drive) coming out the amp behind me so best of both worlds. I have my pedal use limited to the basics and while I have used some phaser or chorus here and there it didn’t really matter in the grand scheme and wasn’t really missed the way similar effects might stand out on a guitar part or that was my feeling at least.

NBD: Fender Roadworn Mike Dirnt Precision Bass
krispn replied to theyellowcar's topic in Bass Guitars
One of my fave Fender models but the weight of some of the original ones was hefty! The necks were ‘big’ but perfectly manageable if I recall. And of course that pick up is top class! I did read the newer road worn models are generally lighter though. -
The sort of thing I don’t need to be reading (I think I still have both pedals in my basket on the Origin site)! I think the 64 is the one I’d be drawn too especially if it’s a bit more B15 in some regards than the SV more rock oriented tones. Still scratching the chin over this. I really should seek my DG ADAM first (but it’s such a useful home practice unit as well as a solid gig weapon).

The Basswitch has switchable A and B inputs/channels, one routed via the eq the other isn’t so you could have your active MM bass into that input and use the jazz into the preamp input which means you can match output volume, have the DI as well as the fx loops etc. One was up for sale on here recently but I think it shifted pretty quickly. It’s so much more than a preamp it’s a really useful tool designed for the working bassist who uses a couple of basses (I think the idea was for folks using both passive and active basses), who needed some eq and fx loops (there is both series and parallel options).

Loved this guys drumming ever since I saw him drum for Alanis way back in the 90’s and was stoked that he got the Foo’s gig. Big loss!

Compression, anyone else here like using a tonne of it?
krispn replied to shoulderpet's topic in Accessories and Misc
I've been using a comp for ages to just even things out rather than address any technique issues, I'm not heavy handed and can be as dynamic as I need to be with my right hand where appropriate. I rarely use a pick but have been more so recently just to get a certain attack when using drive pedals for a more pronounced tone as opposed to what I can get finger style and the comp has helped with that in it's own way, a bit crisper on the top end and a nice punchy tone toon. I have been messing with adding more compression then I normally did and I think it's due to picking up a new to me pedal (DG Hyper Luminal) which has different controls to my last unit. It's been fun trying out some different sounds and on some tunes having the clean blend at set to 'all compressed tone' does add something different. I guess being used to a certain sound then hearing something new/different is pleasing. I'm enjoying listening to the differences in tones and figuring out what works best for me. -

I guess the budget didn’t cover the headstock design? (it's not that bad really I suppose)

An often overlook aspect of a clean blend feature.

If you don't need 'em you don't need 'em!

it nailed the p bass tone and had a very useable palate of sounds. I’d have one in a heartbeat over most other basses.

The bingo preamp was in the Big Al too. In passive mode the Big A was a fine sounding bass. When in active mode the bass became a modern, fine tuneable machine. The EQ really does add that modern zing. The Bongo is a different voice to the Ray for sure and the neo magnets in the Bongo pick up add to this.

Man the preamp in the Bongo is a monster!

Oh aye I agree. What folk think it should have and what the engineers or design goals were are often at odds. They could have and I suppose some folks will be frustrated they didn’t.
