Interesting 'semi' isolated Joe Osborn track
krispn replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
There are a few players who were on ‘everthing’ back in the day Jamerson/Babbit, Duck, JO. Their playing has had an indelible impact on bass playing generally and how we define a style or fill the space. There have been many great innovators since in various genres from funk to punk but there are ‘signposts’ in this and other classics which as a bassist we must have in our vocabulary. Finally what a magical thing to hear only bass, drums and in this case exquisite vocals. Something about the bass and how it flirts with melody, rhythm along with the Vocal -
Go raibh maith agat in Irish Gaelic which would be similar enough.

It’s been mentioned before but if the pick up is that powerful it might need height adjusted.

It’s not that I don’t think there’ll be gigs. If the lockdown got lifted tomorrow the bar we have our ‘residency’ at (3 gigs on average per month) would be on the blower booking us up for the year. It’s just my options are now to do the 60 mile round trip for the show or make sure I’m at work on the day of the gig and play after work. Thing is some days after 13 hours working in a medium secure forensic psychiatric ward and then a gig combined with being awake for 18-19 hours does make me think it’s not entirely worth the hassle 😀

Aye it’s pretty common place but usually on other marketplace type sites. If I’ve nabbed a great deal on here I usually try and shift it locally. One reason being it might be a bit cheeky to sell it on the same site where the bargain was found and it can appear in bad taste but as has been mentioned most folk look at how good the deal is for them at that time and aren’t gonna start searching the for sale threads to see if the similar item has been listed for a similar price. edit thanks for the offer of taking your cab but even with 50% off the asking price I might be shiftding my gear soon too. Less and less likely tht there will be meaningful gigs in the near future and now that I’ve moved what was once a local gig is now a 60 mile round trip.

I think this is where the discussion started and I’m presuming it means if you bought for X price on that forum you’d sell for the same price on that forum.
-
There’s no dishonesty in making a profit. We buy, we sell - sometimes we list gear to get it shifted and don’t mind taking a loss and sometimes we’re able to make a few quid on a bargain. Let the interested parties decide. Simple.

Look I’m all for folks getting as much as they can when selling an item. It just feels a bit naff as a load of gear has come up here over the last year as Covid has seen our gigging income obliterated. I see many cabs and and amp’s come up but folks are generally sticking to their asking prices/market value of the gear in question (I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many Bergantino cabs for sale at once). The ‘convention’ of get what you paid won’t always work as it’s up to the person who takes the calculated risk of buying an item which might not sell for months to decide what they’re willing to accept. It’s also up to the buyer to decide what is a good deal it’s entirely up to the individual in both instances. In fact some folks might say helping out the initial seller by taking their item benefits both parties. One gets cash the other a good deal. If there’s profit to be made down the line then this is dictated by the market. Unfortunately the Covid/no gigs has kinda made it a buyers market for those in a financial position to snap up the deals. Sorry back on topic again... Yamaha are still good eh!

Wasn’t there a big fuss quite a while back about someone listing an original OC-2 for a really high price and loads of folk piling on the for sale thread criticising the asking price? Folks were chiming in about cost, cheaper alternatives etc which on a for sale thread isn’t allowed in the bc rules I think or certainly not appropriate. Not that the bc rules appear to always apply or people feeling like they’re somehow exempt. It’s come up before and it’ll come up again no doubt but if someone wants to list an item for more then they paid it’s up to the buyer to decide if it’s a good deal irrespective of the platform. Back on topic... Yamahas are good eh!

That’s something a troll would say 😉

Joking aside sounds like they're worth a look!

Sounds awful messy

I described it to a friend who is a cardiac nurse thus - if the drums are the heartbeat then bass is the blood.

Octave?

I mentioned this before somewhere on BC but a few years back me and the singer were on the look out for a new fiddle player having had a few months off from gigs. We went to a local folk bar and a punter approaches the singer and starts chatting asking when you guys gigging again etc as they were a regular in the pub we played 3-4 times a month in. The singer turns to introduce me - How do you know Rab? they ask. Err I'm the bass player in his band? and the guy says "Naw don't recognise you mate!" so I stand beside the singer and play air bass and ask if I looked more familiar now? I thought it was funny as f**k

It's always good to be recognised for ones contribution to fashion as much as music. As @Dood says 'Every Little Helps!'

As others have said it’s not always a great long term deal for the end consumer when companies join forces/sell out/merge etc. If Korg leave Aguilar to their own devices to continue doing what they do from their NYC base and don’t impose the business model of ‘more profit year on year or else we move production to Asia then I’m sure folks will be happy. Look at the stir caused by the Vietnamese made SVT’s QC and the ensuing and entirely predictable USA made Heritage model’s which were priced way above what many can afford. Line 6/Yamaha were mentioned and that appears to be a good example of a company leaving well enough alone. To be fair It’s not like Line 6 were some start up and I‘d imagine the L6 crew had some specific clauses to preserving their autonomy. It’s a;so very likely that Yamaha are no fools either and see the market moving to digital/modeling and rightly identified L6 as a market leader in modeling and innovation in that area and the benefits of their acquisition benefit both parties long term. Korg and Spector have been mentioned as a positive move too and presuming they don’t have some caveat that after X years the bean counters have the main say in how things develop I’m sure it’ll continue to be a positive move for all involved. People’s pessimism is totally valid as there’s a few terrible examples already highlighted (Fender and the recent Sadowsky/Warwick stuff) where these type of deals (Gibson Mesa is another recent deal which has caused concern and I think that is totally valid too) have meant a drop in quality or brands disappearing entirely. I guess Fender used the Genz Benz know how to inform their Rumble amps so the end user doesn’t necessarily ‘lose out’ but the marketplace becomes that little bit less exciting in terms of competition spurring innovation but who knows what clever ideas are on the horizon! That’s at least something to be positive about. I’ve no plans to buy any Mesa, Aguilar, Gibson or Korg gear in ’21 - well not new at least and I’m more likely to sell off gear due to the pandemic. I guess for companies a deal with Korg or Gibson isn’t too far removed form that notion either. Better to put money in the retirement fund as the global pandemic continues to rage and gigs don’t look that likely in the near future for many of us, few peo-le with disposable income and nowhere to play as the global economy continues to struggle.
-
I guess old Aguilar and Mesa gear before the prices shoot up further!
-
How long before this becomes part of the Yamaha folklore or worse ‘fact’ 😂
-
To be fair Alex Aguilar has been out of the company for many, many years and recently worked with Fender on the Downtown Express ‘multi fx’. I do understand that a buyout or ‘takeover’ is a different thing and not that I plan on buying any Aguilar gear in the near future let’s hope that a well respected company can keep its rep and continue to bring out decent products. I wonder if we’re likely to see a sudden surge in pedals and other non amp/cab gear?
-
Maybe I should go and buy that DB680 before the prices get stupid.

I wonder if ‘21 will be the year of the 12 string!! Probably not.
