Bass --> FoH with no backline. What preamp pedal are you using?
krispn replied to Al Krow's topic in PA set up and use
What are you missing that your current set up isn’t offering? What other preamps have you tried and what was it about them that didn’t work or do you want to mix it up. The Zoom is handy but do you want a stand alone, single pre unit with tubes and transformers and no need for presets? I ask because I have been using a preamp set up (into a cab ir) direct to doh and I’m very pleased with it. It’s a tube based unit and has a nice character which I feel gives some extra dimension in the mix and it feels responsive under the fingers, no latency etc. That little bit of grit I can get from it blends into things nicely in the mix and doesn’t sound sterile going direct (and that was before the cab ir was on my board). There’s tons of pre amps out there. It all depends what’s important - latest chipset, one good solid core tone, presets… -
A refresh of what I have for sale. OC2- £100 posted uk The OG octave. Fat sine wave sub sound that is the foundation of the bass synth tone. On its own it’s great but start adding the modulation, filter and fuzz and there it is - the classic sound! I was after the MXR vbo for its smaller footprint- nabbed this then an MXR fell into my lap 🙄 *price reduction* JHS Colourbox v2 £350 posted U.K. Long story short bought this for the transformer based goodness on both the di out and the 1/4 out to the amp (yes it has 2 Transformers) and based on a Neve style eq. Then got a Simone in an offer I couldn’t refuse. I’m seeing a pattern here😮💨😭 Trex bass juice £50 posted U.K. Solid dirt doing clean boost to filth. Second footswitch activates boost. Pics to follow.

Flawless. Simply flawless!

Ian Martin Allison has some great videos on YouTube where he tries to get very specific sounds on his stomp recreating specific songs etc. Could be useful to hear if it’s the kinda thing you’re aiming for if you’re needing persuasion.

The tape reel has a nice saturation effect which is worth checking out. I was thinking of getting one for some chorus and maybe replacing a drive or two but should really demo one first even though I’ve had a stomp before.

45-126 with purple silk. Cut for a fender and the B is basically unused. I bought these as I really like the Lakland JO flats I’d played and heard that GHS supplied Lakland with their stings. Makes sense they’re based in Michigan near Chicago. Minimal use and lovely feel to these. Had them on my other 4 string jazz bass but never really used them in anger. Price includes 1st class postage in the U.K.

Tough one this as it’s a really versatile sounding unit with a unique tone control shifting the eq from a more scooped Ampeg sound to a fuller mid forward sound across its sweep. I’ve really enjoyed using this but due to some changes I’m happy to let it go. Don’t mind keeping it if there’s no nibbles but have seen a few pedals I’d like to try and it’s one in one out. These weren’t made in huge quantities and it took a look time to find this one. One of the only ones I’ve seen in the U.K. so it’s a bit if a rare bird and probably not that well known. Slim profile which makes it pedal board friendly. For me this sounds best pushing mids and filling out the band good under solos and can get very dirty. Comes with original box and signed delivery in U.K.

Cracking dual function pedal can be used from a clean boost to dirt to boosted filth. Lovely organic and warm sounding unit with a lot of tweak-ability due to the wide range on the controls. (The settings on the pedal are when I normally use it for a bit of sparkle and enhancing the bass as an always on pedal). Fully boxed with some Velcro on the bottom. Can be powered from 9v supply or battery. Price includes postage in U.K

I had my old stomp set up in line with other pedals as well as some things in the loop. Ian Martin Allison has just done Janek’s podcast and they touch upon this briefly about committing to a Stomo and how IMA has his set up. Might be worth a look although it doesn’t go mad in depth into routing. Between the stomp and it’s loop and an external looper there are quite a few possibilities depending on your needs.

As in MorningStar ML5? I think it’s a midi switcher so while I’m guessing it can change parameters etc I don’t have first hand experience using one. I don’t use midi on my board as it’s a much more meagre looking creation than some of these big boys.

The clean track/dorty track is a standard and as others have said a clean DI track can alway be though if as a ‘safety track’ if things don’t work out/as a clean blend to ensure a strong low end without getting too muddy etc. lots of producers and artists like that clean solid low with the dirt being added to the higher frequencies doing that x-over type thing. The Darkglass X pedals use that principle clean compressed lows worh face melting dirty mids. See what features your daw has and if you can pull up an eq pelf the track play about with it, even on a clean bass, and hear what the main frequencies are doing in terms of punch, mud, woolly, bright, nasal, zing, air and all these other ‘eq’ descriptions. It’ll stand you in good stead for gigging and general sound management- say you’re gifs a doom and you get one of those eq anomalies you’re likey gonna be in a better position to problem solve and get a sound you like. It’s time well spent. “Produce like a Pro” on YouTube has some good videos on recording as do a heap of others. There’s a a school of thought about putting the track in as complete as possible or the old “fixing it in the box” but it’s good to try both options if only to figure out which option is better for you. It’s good to make our own mistakes even if we’re told differently sometimes. Good luck and stick with it!

It could sound muddy or quite ‘thick’ in a mix (it does to my ear but then we might have different ideas of what we’re trying to achieve with dirty bass) but if that’s the sound you’re going for of and/if it works for demo purposes then there’s no right or wrong.. Are you using a daw which has the ability to eq and make some changes? I started out experimenting with eq and figuring out how to get my bass sitting where I liked it - the clean blend/mixing a clean and dirt track and Eq-ing both to get the best of both worlds is great learning too. If you have some Cab sims/cab IR you can apply it might be fun to hear it through those too - a matter of trial and error all this home recording stuff. Adding cab sims can help make the bass fit better as it can massage the high end etc. Something like a zoom or hx stomp can be a good investment as an interface for daw effects etc.
