  1. Totally agree some good points well made. I agree with him on two handed tapping and feel the same way about slap. Great technique and sound but many of us would be pained to endure a whole set of it on guitar or bass (we do count as they audience’ too). Fans of Plini, any of the go to guitar gods form the 80’s and many modern shred bands probably dig it in moderation etc I was simply defending myself in that I said many audiences don’t care for slap. I didn’t say they dislike it and seeing how I was quoted in that reply I felt a bit misrepresented. Maybe it is a bold assertion but I stand by it. Let’s face it if we all checked back through our post on BC there’s be many a contradiction, revelation and 180 flip on opinions we held not so long ago. I don’t think my opinion has change on this matter too much over the years. I use slap on one tune in the covers gig where I feel it really drives the section of the song along. Only person to notice so far is my drummer but she also acknowledged the variation I play to the bass during the solo section directly after it which takes on a more melodic theme and changes the feel. To be fair she’s a very accomplished musician and has a great ear and hears everything.!
  2. As a test could someone post a video on you tube saying Dua Lipa bass cover and play no slap and see how many hits it gets in four weeks. I’d be really interested to see the out comes and think it could really start a good debate on click bait verses technique. I’m sure it would generate some fine opinions and theories.
  3. For clarity I simply said most audiences don’t care for slap bass. Fans of particular genres or specific bands can obviously go all in especially when it’s such an intrinsic part of the bands style - early Chilli Peppers, Level 42, Marcus et al. There’s defo some confirmation bias going on here (well it is a bass forum, right!). I’d much rather listen to a player play in time, play the right notes and if they can season it with some style and technique fair play. Likes on YT can be attributed to fans of the artist rather than fans of a technique or simply appreciation of a musician playing well. **Cue some slap video with a million hits 😀
  4. I don’t think that many audiences care for slap bass to be fair. Of course you’ll get the odd goof doing the Alan Partridge air slap bass thing but unless it’s a track known for slap (playing much Level 42 or Stanley Clarke). I find slap can work in songs as an accent or if tastefully done - Hit Me Baby One More Time is a fine example and Dumpstaphunk Standin’ In Your Stuff are personal favourites (look out for the 6 string bass too). It’s not that I dislike slap but like many who are proficient at a skill like that it can become over used and technique for techniques sake. I once dropped a bass down some stairs and it was the best sounding slap bass sound/solo I ever got but to be fair it wouldn’t have grooved with the band but as a solo piece! Fuggedaboutit!
  5. Ha! I was just gonna bump this after seeing it in a box post-house move. I think it’s a cracking wee unit and as you say just sweetens up the signal chain especially when using Dirt
  6. Just from the band name I knew you were from N.Ireland. Class!
  7. It does look like a cracking bass with a high build quality. The neck looks great!
  8. If sims would do a refin on this it'd likely shift in no time.
  9. Yeah it’s one I had done by Tim/Tom https://www.gig.ink
  10. It might well do. Whatever their jazz type wiring thing should work
  11. Hey nash I did this very thing and it’s a great option for a p bass. Here’s demo I made... What did I like and what didn’t I like... As you can tell from the demo I used a tone styler in mine and frankly I don’t think it would have been as good a mod without it. For me the only issue was it didn’t sound like a p bass but then again that was the point but the TS10 does some neat tricks to add back in some p bass like mids if you want or need them... The PBird stood out for the unique quality it has in its tone and while I wasn’t ripping things up in a metal trio the versatility of the pick up and the tone styler (it can do balls out and it can do dub with a mid setting which will just work for you once you find the right position) meant I used this bass on a host of gigs and could always find a sound which worked from country to rock. I’ve not tried to describe the sound as the demo will take care of that I hope.
  12. Mine arrived this morning. Stuck them on the jazz as my p bass is sounding too good with the flats it’s currently wearing. Nice feel to the strings!
  13. What don’t I like about it? I just preferred the MXR in the side by side. Maybe the eq was more suited or the drive was ‘better’ for what I was doing at the time? One of the things with describing what I don’t like is that you might be drawn to all the things I dislike. Describing these things in terms such and meaty lows or full mids could be overblown lows or boxy mids to the next person. It’s like on a jazz bass. I think you and I have different sounds we gravitate to. I have a preference on where I like my mid range and on my amp I know boosting certain frequencies works for me to reinforce lows mids without boosting lows which I find boosting lows becomes too much. When using drive I have a preference for my mids much higher but still below or around 2kHz. Looking back maybe the BDDI was lacking something there in the low mids or too high in the highs? You’re asking me to give notes on a pedal comparison from 10yrs ago and I wasn’t really taking notes I just knew in a head to head the MXR worked better for me. You’re in that stage of pedal buying where you have a bunch of them side by side and as such are maybe more into hearing the differences. I’m just at a stage where I know what I gravitate to. For instance I don’t think a super wide frequency response can like the F112 would work for me live as I like the cab to add its own thing and don’t need 18-20kHz response 4-6kHz is plenty for the bass or certainly my style.
  14. @Cuzzie has the VTbass 500w head which is basically the VTDI plus power amp in one wee unit. He might have some good info on the unit if interested?
  15. I nabbed a Squier CV Jazz locally for a massive bargain used. Added a new wiring loom and pick ups and it still came in under £250. If you're happy to have a hunt you'll find great deals. I'm happily (or was) gigging the bass with no qualms. Mine is passive as I don't really need an active EQ - have a pre-amp on my pedal board. There are other good options if you prefer more modern features but it's hard to beat a Passive jazz. Oh and I resprayed mine Sherwood Green! I like mine alot, 'tis quite the playable little fella and sounds great!
  16. Depends if you can select an fx slot and where it comes in the signal chain. With the PGo are all the fx blocks 'fixed' in sequence so as an example it will always be ordered comp>drive>filter>pitch>modulation>amp/cab kinda thing or can you move their position in the chain? If you can reorder theor position and can drop the fx loop anywhere in the chain you'll be grand. Another thing might be to A/B settings with the Stomp and the Becos in an adjacent fx loop and A/B between them (or another similar comp from the list) to get the type of comp feel/sound you like so you've basically cloned the sound you gravitate to as a preset.
  17. Gonna get to this in a wee bit (just woke up)! Did you have particular song or sound in mind or just throwing something together?
  18. Thanks for giving us the discount! I think folks are much more likely to take a punt on something new if there's a little incentive. I'm really looking forward to stringing the P bass with my nickel set!
  19. I’ll give it a spin over the weekend - got a few more nightshifts before this week is over!
