Why do some BC sellers insist on buyer arranging courier?
krispn replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
Here’s an example. I bought a pick up, small easily packaged but it was expensive and unfortunately got lost in the system. I sought a full refund and the seller refused saying why should they suffer the loss. I presumed the item was insured and said just claim it back on the shipping cover. I was told I didn’t specify that I wanted the item insured and it was implied that I was only asking about insurance now the item was lost. I explained I’d just presumed that the item would have been insured because it was about £200 value. It became a whole mess trying to get my money back made worse by a seller who appeared to abdicate responsibility, turning it back on me because I hadn’t insisted on insurance from the outset. Both of us were ‘right’ but equally both of us made some plain errors in not insisting on a few basics. -
I’ve mentioned this to a fellow BC’er a while back that, in theory, one could go to any manufacturers website and check the eq points on a specific pre/amp and then dial that in on a parametric eq to be in the ball park. Obviously on certain amps and preamps it’s the magic of the circuitry which influences the sound as much as the settings (and the rest) but the HX range affords folk who wanna give it a go a chance to and to further tweak to suit their rig. A case in point the best bass tone I ever got was into a Read Purity pre amp with eq bypassed. Absolutely sublime and I know I could never replicate that on a HX Stomp!

You can do the same with speaker settings putting them after an amp or pre amp for instance.

Maybe form Dr Tone link. He has some tweaked settings to replicate various well regarded pre amps and speakers etc.

Paid online bass courses you've done & can highly recommend

That’s me told off! I’ve only paid/used Ariane’s material but stand by the recommendation. It’s more theory based than technique though. The rest has been free you tube stuff -

Metronome and patience! Take stuff you’re struggling with and slow it down or take things which are comfortable and play them faster for fun! There’s a version of Dean Town on you tube played faster than the original! Faste! I’m still trying to learn it at about 20 bpm slower! Sheer madness and total technique! You could program the drum machine to play specific beats which incorporates accents for slap parts etc. which could kill two birds with one stone. I’m keen for the UA Apollo ‘Luna’ update to come out so I can have access to some new virtual instruments and stuff to play with but alas I’m still working and likely to be doing more work over the next few weeks than see a slow down. -

What specifically are you hoping to work on? Theory or technique? Ariana Cap is a fine teacher but I’m sure there’s many teachers on here who could help if you have a specific angle. I used AC’s book for some work on theory etc. I liked the style and thought it easy to follow. Something I found useful was actually figuring out some incredibly basic stuff about the application of modes even though it’s likely not that important or necessarily but simply from a playing/theory point it made me understand them in my own way even if the wider musical application might be different - I never made the link for all these years. I suppose if I’d took a lesson I may have figured it much much sooner 🙂 -
Why do some BC sellers insist on buyer arranging courier?

It’s all about perspective though could just as easily be laziness 😀 As a seller wanting the other party to arrange shipping means they are giving the responsibility over the buyer for their new gear. Once they have paid some folks consider it to be the property of the new owner and their responsibility. Other folk see that responsibility with them as the seller to ensure the goods get to the buyer in one piece and pride themselves on seeing ‘completion of the transaction’ once the item is safely delivered to the new owner. It just is what it is. -
What’s wrong with her bass? 😀

Hats off again to Dr. Tone. Loving his JBL eq settings which will work with all HX products. Gonna try running them in parallel with some cabs and drive too and hear what it sounds like.
-
I’ll be sure and try it

My stomp arrived and I’m looking forward to getting some Dr.Tone patches back into it for tweaking. Great resource!

Tech-nique - knowing how get what you need form your gear!

My bad it’s just the bridge in the BB102X which is ceramic
-
I think the Yamaha BB's have ceramic mags versus the AlNiCo in the 735 so the newer range with the AlNiCo pick ups would tend to sound more vintage. I recall a talking point from the older BB fans was that the new pick ups were more 'tame' (which could mean vintage, lower output, weaker etc.) while those who weren;t so keen on the older BB's felt that they were OTT and didn't sound like their Fenders. Go figure! Having had some recent experience of ceramic mag pick ups in a p bass they're very up front and certainly have their place but defo not vintage by any stretch!
-
P basses are generally considered as being more mid forward due to the pick up placement. Jazz basses are generally know for their scooped mid slap friendly/rock band friendly tone as the ‘scoop’ sit either side of crunchy mid forward guitars. Obviously a jazz can do the bridge pick up thing etc but in general terms that’s the ‘signature sound’ of each bass in its most basic terms. Any two pick up bass will have that scoop to a varying degree irrespective of pick up type dual MM, JJ, PP and combinations thereof. Nordstrand have a great demo of the Bigman pick up with three way switch and the difference in the MM style pick up from single back coil to single front coil is clearly audible and that’s in a MM pick up!!

Sweet I’ll have a look and see how it compares. Compression is one of those things which can be very player specific in terms of bass set up, playing style etc. As an example I was listening to a SR5 demo and the guys playing was so aggressive it didn’t really give the ‘average’ player a true idea of what the bass could do in a regular band type setting. Having played one it was capable of a heap of useable tones!
-
The three band compression is good but it does warrant a tweak, listen with/listen without it engaged, repeat type approach which is fine when we have the tone to sit with it. It can be a bit nuanced but it’s good to be able to geek out. Of course just patching in a comp you like and can quickly set to your preferences is a bonus too with the fx loop. I’ll be getting the Cali76 patched in and A/B’ing over the coming days. I might just stick with what’s on board the HXS for the sheer handiness.
-
You may find adding a Klon in parallel could do a Bas Soul Food type thing. Start messing with cross overs (and multi band comp) and you’re into a new set of bass friendly tones. As we’re always gonna be the poor cousin to the guitarist who these units are primarily aimed at we have to use our cunning and guile to coax out the sounds we want.

Great to be in contact with Aidan after he'd helped me out last last year with a pick guard query. Pleasure to do business with him!
-
Hassle free and swift swift delivery which is what we always want with new gear. Andy has been a delight to deal with! Cheers!

Mine arrived today so looking forward to having a play later.
