If that’s what you do - comp/limiter at the start/end of the signal chain - then I’m sure you have good reason to but at home volumes it strikes me as more pointless than valueless but if you need a good strong signal to feed pedals etc. When you claim “many folk typically would have a comp at the start... limiter at the end” who are you talking about? When the discussion of using a single compressor causes waves of consternation I’d imagine this boots and braces set up might be just as divisive especially if so few of us run filters, synths etc. Its not an uncommon studio practice to use two comps working together adding a little bit of compression here and there in the signal chain, so I get the concept and the becos could be useful for a multi band comp set up.

I plan on trying some of his eq option with the parametric eq on the Mooer as I recall some of his settings for the Stomp/HX were pretty solid.

Thanks Luke. The pedal board is a stand alone gigging board and has worked really well. I put it together to be sorted working for live, studio and iem/direct and I’ve had the bulk of it for quite a few years. I fancied the mooer for IR as an option having enjoyed what the stomp could do but I basically used the stomp for all the stuff I already had and just kept my board and returned the stomp. I’ve a few offers in for some of the pedals and was away on holiday so kinda reluctant to get them shifted but the mooer can fill some gaps. Fingers crossed!!

I don’t quite follow... The HX range has any number of cabs both bass and guitar and I’m guessing you can use those on HX Native. Not sure if you can export from Native into the hxfx but if you can then you’d have access to all the Line6 IR’s which you could experiment with in Native or the relevant HX device of you have more than one. You might not want to run an IR into your cab as it’s already a cab but could be fun to try it. It might be an idea to set up your outputs to feed the DI signal to have the IR going to that output only. It’s pretty easy to set up or or was on the stomp where you could have effects going to your amp and have an amp and cab sim hitting the DI out only. My best Helix tip/advice is RTFM 😀

Thank you for synonym of utilitarian and the exposure of my post-Brexit right wing BC agenda These type of (music) forums are all about the community and banter as well as learning something along the way. If any person wishes to spend their money on gear they don't use (yet), can't lift or struggle to program that's their prerogative and sometimes being in the club or part of the discussion is more rewarding than the gear itself irrespective of the price of admission or if they use the gear frequently or not - we are social creatures and BC is a great platform to share experience and opinions. I love music gear. I love testing and trying out pedals and amps and basses and my feedback pages will testify to that but I do love to do so within a band context as much as on my own. Like most BC'ers I do most of my bass playing at home with headphones normally with Logic running, maybe a drum pattern. I hear a lotof nuance and love using different preamps, EQ's and plugin of many tpye of gear in my DAW/Apollo to recreate and experiment with sounds and tones. I think in the past I've shared different eq screen grabs of my different basses explaining where one P pick up might be more mid forward at 500Hz on the graphic and other more prominent at 220Hz, frequency charts for that most utilitarian use of EQ and other gems. You know very well I love a bit of nuance and geek chat and somewhere in a few hundred pages of DM you'll find those screen grabs, opinions and all the other nonsense we've discussed Anyhow derail aside I have a couple of pre amps to use with the Mooer which also has the option to models power amps so conceptually or dare I say practically the pre amp on my pedal board should suffice and I have both solid state and valve based units to try out both in isolation and in a room with the band. Exciting times ahead!

I don't. I never struggled with the form factor/U.I of the Stomp while I had one, found it pretty straight forward to use both on the fly and via the PC editor. I found Line 6 did a good job but I digress... Just bought a flat so my savings are well and truly depleted and any 'disposable income' for the foreseeable future will be spent on things like flooring and power tools! I was gonna sell off the pedal board then maybe nab something small and good enough to make the FOH/IEM sound a bit more authentic for the band mates, me and the punters hence my question earlier about the Zoom and comparing the Stomp. I don't wanna be spending £300+ on a pedal which I'm gonna use 3% off. It may well be unlikely that my 'high ticket' pedal board items will sell so... the Mooer seems like a decent way to have a 'better' FOH and IEM sound for little money and can pair nicely with what's unlikely to sell (the Cali76 and at least one of the pre-amps is my guess). If the pedals don't sell I'm not gonna be upset as they sound great but the additional cash would be handy of course. @Al Krow knows well I'm quite practical with my gear and see it as functional, tools to get the job done so my gear (not all at the same time I should add) gets some gig time and judged on it's merits in that context. It's why I like to poke fun at him for never really gigging his gear even though he does quite enjoy opining about it. Oh BTW How's the HXFX working out for you live? Banter aside the Mooer does sound promising and will be gigged with my remaining pedals at the end of Feb as an IEM/D.I. rig with my main band at our regular venue. I've got some other gigs before then but they're all with the amp and cab, no D.I. used.

Mooer bought! Very handy and impressive for it's size. I've been tweaking this morning and it sounds good just comp>mooer>hpf/lpf into headphones. I'll likely go to a local studio and try it into a PA to fine tune and hopefully it should be a straight forward side step to the gigging environment.

Covers band players. Nail it or close enough?
krispn replied to krispn's topic in General Discussion
I think you’d have done just fine 😀 This wasn’t a wreckless seat of the pants gig. Good and or educated players can make a song work this felt more like someone who enjoyed all the aspects of being in a band except learning the songs. I’ve know a few folk like that. -

I like the discussion of covers band or tribute act but I certainly think that a covers band can do a pretty close cover and still add some of the bands personality be that in the solo's, in the structure (instrumentation dependent etc.) or for the style the band chose to play the song. We recently started doing a cover of a cover of a two song mash up and I do tend to put my own little twist to the ending of each verse nothing fancy just maybe following the melody. I don't think anyone would notice but few would know the cover version in the first place. The next thing is to have the drummer punctuate the bits I play to tighten up the feel of those wee changes and make it a bit more our own. I find some songs can evolve or devolve the more they get played either some wee bits get added or left off but whatever works I guess. Like others I tend to stick to the original bass line but may substitute a fill if the space is there or as above just add a wee bit leading into a bridge or chorus. I'm not much of a bass solo fan so I spare the band that indignity! I recently saw a band while on holiday who were covering really well know chart/classic songs and the bass player was omitting what I'd consider fundamental parts of the bass lines (these parts were in the original song and gave the song that added energy, they maybe followed the vocal line or added some musical tension in the space where the vox dropped out, when the song was moving to the chorus - you get the idea). I've certainly enjoyed playing these tracks at home/live and it makes the song less interesting to play and listen to by their omission. I was likely the only person 'listening'! -

Cheers! Guys feel free to add below but I’m aware there’s other threads doing this. -

It was an I’ll judged idea by the choir leader to highlight members so apologies for the terrible video editing. Bass is hard to hear too so phones/earbuds might help. I should add it’s nothing special 😀 -

I think if the songs originally had a simple bass line then that’s what you have to work with but we can embellish them to suit us as a three piece or four piece etc especially if we’re substituting some synth or keys. We play Just Can’t Get Enough and I’m playing a combination of the synth parts, using finger style, some thumb and even a touch of slap but yeah what ever works in the context of your band. This probably ties in with the show us your band live threads but feel free to post your cover version below to illustrate a point. I’ve some video but would need to host it on you tube first etc but we’re working on it. I’ve been in a band with a keys player and the arrangement was changed so had to adapt my part for that arrangement. I’ll link one below and apologies for the terrible video style! -

I agree. In my country gig I had 50+ songs to learn which all sounded so similar but all had their little idiosyncrasies. It was sometimes difficult to remember which song ascended with the vocal and which descended. I mean it all sounded close enough and I dare say I’ve created my own versions of some tunes but there are some which I feel must be played as the original as an ascending run here or a descending run there punctuates a melody or a chord change and to not play it would be remiss. Maybe it’s the country scene but those fans love the songs and are well educated in the originals! -

I’d never had such a full and well explained response if I’d given you all options on a plate would I?😉 -

I’m doing a dep gig and listening to the band on you tube they look seem to do pretty straight covers. It makes learning the set easier! In my own band we keep it pretty close to the original versions too but we do put our own spin on some stuff especially when the songs were synth bass heavy (80’s pop stuff) and we tend to have a more folk twist due to our instrumentation. -
Following on from a response on another thread... While all the basic essentials of playing in a band are considered and taken for granted (knowing where the 1 is, timing, feel, groove etc.) for those of us in covers bands do you try and nail the part as close to the recording as possible or is it a case of close enough is good enough? Some explanations of you choices would be really good insight into your decision.

Which band did you leave? There were three on the go right? Im on the brink of leaving a band but with another venture on the horizon and the reason for a new thread post I’m about to put up.
-
Well I was considering something more affordable than a stomp. I’ll go with a mooer radar and maybe hang on to one or two of my current gigging pedals. Might be enough the I can consider the upgrade if I hear any reason to. As you were!
-
Cheers I was hoping as a low cost option it might do the trick. Good enough for live and all that. It was your zoom I was looking at 😀
-
@Al Krow How does your recent Zoom/BossLS2 rat patch compare to the HX version running a parallel signal path with the rat type drive? I ask as I’m considering going back to a Stomp for iem/direct to desk duties. You may have seen I’ve all my pedals currently up for sale but not ruling out a low cost zoom as a buddy is selling one and has sung its praises frequently as being good enough for live. My earlier query on the specific zoom thread was re-directed to here🙄 You’re in the unique position to have tried both A/B and I know you’ve used the zoom live. If this is the wrong thread I’m happy to be directed to a more suitable one.
-
Ahh I didn’t realise it was a Zoom/Boss LS2 thread😀
-
How does it stack up against the hxfx with the rat type drive and parallel signal path? I’d have thought that would get a pretty solid tone and an all in one gigging solution?

You should link them.
