Would you say the CS had more bottom over the 74's? My understanding is the CS are over wound 60's spec. The 70's style uses a different wire/winding which translates as more mid forward/reduced lows type sound. A workable sound but slightly different to what I was after in this one.

I know, I know me again.... So I've had the jazz bass into the amp for some volume based noodling with the new pick ups. I'd say there is familiar tone coming out of the bass but with some added oomph. When I last owned a jazz I had Model J's in it and I really enjoyed the P-like mids they brought and it suited what I was doing back then ( one elec guitar, one acoustic and bass). I tweaked the pick up heights - finally got a decent ruler which has helped with accuracy rather than just eyeballing and ears which I've used previously. This time I was after a more traditional J sound and I think these 60's voiced NJ4's have that in abundance. IMO the stock pick ups were a bit harsh on the top end for me. The NJ4's have more in the lows and a more refined, in it's truest sense, rather than tamed top end. I'm no fan of super zingy (or active eq). I know where I like to set my eq/tone control to mange that 'top' but I do appreciate that a part of the jazz bass magic is the 'both pick ups on, tone wide open'. I hear these pick ups being a bit better suited to what I prefer before eq. I am aware that the strings are still quite new and this top end may naturally tame over time but I'll be whacking some flats on for further noodling this afternoon. I would like to hear the Aguilar 60's wind in this bass too and if some become available used I'll try them but as for now this NJ4 pair are a good match. Stock pick ups to be listed later!

Some NJ4 pick ups came available on BC so I've nabbed them, they've arrived and I've installed them. I'd say a bit more bottom over the originals and just make a good sounding bass more Jazz like. Look forward to hearing them into the amp tomorrow night.

For those who may be interested the CV jazz pick ups have this on their base. If anyone is familiar with Tone Riders they may have a similar sticker or code.

You can send amp/cab sims to the pa while fx only to your amp etc Tbe I/O wtht eh Stomp is fab but you'll need to sit with the unit, the manual ir a tutorila video and work through it. You Tube is a the resource for this one. My advice is go hire a few hours in a rehearsal space which has a bass amp and a pA and set it up to suit. You can A/B amp v PA etc and you'll do so much more in this way then trying to grab an 20 min here and there. It worked for me having all the options/possibilities for how i might use it to try in one place. Download the manual and if you can bring a laptop/tablet and work along with you tube setting up patches, I/O options etc. It'll be time well spend!

I’m gonna change my pick ups more for my own inquisitiveness but I’ll not be selling off the originals until I get a chance to A/B them listen to them and go with the ones which best suit me. The dance begins...

You could probably use your mac for the tracks and the ipad for lyrics. Anyone you know have any local connections for drummer who could jump in for you? Not sure how complex the drum tracks are but a decent drummer could likely learn them or mayeb ask one of the acts on the bill if the drummer would be up for it? I recall seeing a band in Edinburgh who were over from Australia and a local fan had arranged to drum for them on a gig. He was great and you wouldn't have known he wasn't in the band. PAF!

Black Raven do one for the Full fat Helix. It’s a full ‘cover’ like a clear plastic/acrylic overlay and for the LT too. Not sure about other sizes. Are you needing to just cover the screen/scribble strips or the whole unit and which unit are you covering.

Sherwood Green is a sleeper colour. You don’t think you like it but then you behold it’s beauty. Relic’d Sherwood is even better! Having had the neck off this is a 2008 model not that it makes a difference but it is playable. I also took the lacquer off the neck to suit me. Feels great!

I’m actually happy with the bass as it sounds but it’s the lure that something else may be better but I’ll certainly not make any changes until the new year if I do go that route. I’ll just tell folks I’ve put in some unheard of esoteric brand and no one will be any the wiser. The green has turned out as hoped (phew) but I’ll likely need to touch it up. The back is a bit patchy but not overly concerned for now out of sight out of mind. pretty straightforward to do if anyone was thinking about it.

Yeah I’m not a massive fan of super zingy top end and since adding the new pots/loom the tone control is working as hoped. For me rolling tone back bit and a touch off the back pick up (5-10%) is enough to remove enough zing and colour the sound but still get that jazz thing if I dig in or need to throw the thumb at it for any reason

I think the 60’s winds are meant to be quite open and some seem to have a nice bottom low mids thing. I’m pushing that freq area with a tone hammer but if I can get something voiced that way perfect. I’ve done a basic set up on the cv since getting it but haven’t changed pick up height. Gonna make some measurements before stripping the body for the respray so I’ll experiment then. Good call

Yeah I'm still a bit torn over replacing the pick ups but it's early days yet. As I said it's a familiar sound of a jazz and the contrast to what I have is fun but listening to a few examples online - always a terrible idea - some are standing out as being a perceived improvement over what I have/what I'm after from this little gem. I had Model J's in my last jazz but I think I'd like this to be a bit more traditional. I'm unlikely to be solo'ing the bridge and like the 60's vibe over the 70's vibe. The Aguilar 60's wind and the Fender CS60's are working for my taste plus I've been strongly advised to try Creamery jazz pick up's. So much choice and I may find myself giving them all a shot at some point. I know total folly!
