1.
It's taken me 24 hours to try to come up with a sensible reply but I can't. This comment is a load of cock.
Hmm. Sounds like you don't like the suggestion (which is fair enough) but can't actually refute it. Look, I can perfectly understand that musicians trying to earn money by gigging are likely to be upset by other bands playing for free, but that's life. Freedom of choice is what we all want isn't it? What would you prefer - some sort of 'closed shop' arrangement where only paid members of some sort of union would be allowed to play music? What next - ban joke-telling unless you're being paid as a stand-up comedian?
 2.
nail on its head, afaik hobbies are for the bedroom and the garage and who would expect to get paid for their hobby? soon as you start competing with other bands for paying gigs it aint a hobby any more. I gig cos i love it, but it also has to pay some bills, i don’t have a high paying day job to subsidise a hobby these days.
That's all fair enough in your particular case but it clearly doesn't apply to everyone else does it? Are you advocating banning anyone from playing for free just because you can't afford to do so?
 3.
If playing in a band is your hobby then I can see why my rules don't apply, but as soon as some promoters see bands playing for nothing they'll expect everyone else to do the same, which is bad for the rest of us.
Would you apply the same logic to freeware/open source software? By your reasoning above, that must be bad for the rest of the software industry. Would you apply the same logic to the voluntary sector? That must surely be bad for paid workers in the same sectors. Such things certainly benefit the customers for freeware or volunteer services, so another way of looking at things is that bands that play for free are doing the public a service by keeping the cost of live music lower than it might otherwise be. In these days of £150 ticket prices for big-name gigs, this might not be such a bad thing.
 4. Well spotted! Bloody iPad auto-spellchecker! (notice how I pushed the blame for my poor workmanship onto the tool )
 5. If anyone still doubts the massive impact of The Beatles as cultural icon then prepare to be convinced: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-18886223
 6.
Not suggesting we should forget they exiisted. I've seen 50 years of Beatle fanatics, and judging by the title of this thread, theres still hype. Still people who think of them as some sort of prophets. Some people bought anything they did, or said. Some even bought the white album and Yellow Submarine. They were just 4 (slightly upper) working class kids from Liverpool. Time to let go and move on.
But why? Millions of people still revere centuries-dead classical composers, millions of people still revere centuries-dead writers. And why not? I can't see the problem. Let people choose for themselves.
 7.
Yeah, but are there Beethoven weekends in Cologne ?, Does the local council cash in on it ? OK theres a Beethoven Hotel in Amsterdam,( just had to check) but its not full of people wearing Beethoven suits wanting to watch tribute pianists is it ?
I wouldn't bet on it. Ever been to Salzberg during the annual Mozart Festival? Or Bayreuth during the annual Wagner festival? The Beatles have already passed the first test of musical immorality, that of having new generations of fans who were not even born when the band existed, so I don't see them fading from cultural memory anytime soon. That doesn't mean you have to like them of course.
 8.
Nothing like making a new member feel welcome
Whatever happened to the established netiquette of doing a little personal research about a subject before diving in and asking daft questions? Given that the OP already had an opinion to hand, we may have fallen foul of that other well-established online tenet of not feeding the trolls. But, since the sun is shining and I'm in a good mood, I'll concede I may have been a bit abrupt. T'was still a daft question though - no offence.
 9.
The Beatles effectively split up nearly 45 , yes 45 years ago, Time to let em go I think. Otherwise there are those who will cash in just about forever.
That's nothing. Beethoven died 185, yes 185 years ago but people are still cashing in on him.
 10.
Getting away from this situation for a second, the tendency of people to say things in the classifieds like "I bought this last month, but its not for me, so seeing as its basically new I want 90% of the new price for it" really gets my goat. Things can only be new once. Once something has been bought from a shop it is second hand, regardless of condition or age.
Yes, this makes me smile as well. Things are offered for sale - you can attached whatever conditions you like but it's the buyer that decides and for the risk associated with buying a used (even barely) item with no warranty, the extra 10% for a genuinely new and guaranteed item is going to look pretty good to most buyers.
 11. While I agree with Commando_Jack that it's not easy to see the full story, it sounds as if the seller "sold as new" and the buyer interpreted this as meaning it should be the same as if it was bought in a shop and should therefore have a one year warranty. The thing breaks about a year later and the buyer wants to claim on that assumed warranty. This is all very unfortunate but, frankly, no-one should expect a second-hand item to come with a one year warranty (unless they pay for a waranty/insurance policy) and chasing the seller of used item a year after purchase is, well, not very reasonable. Besides, as kevin_lindsay rightly say, not even a shop would offer a one year warranty on a used item, so why expect one from a private buyer? I can't really see any fault here, except the unfortunate expectation of the buyer.
 12.
Anybody who says 'no offence' actually means to give offence. I would be deeply offended if I actually gave a damn about what saddo finger jockeys thought
No offence, but the original question is just plain stupid. Might as well ask what music is best to play or what colour bass to use. Does anyone actually listen to music these days or are they too busy checking out the pick, the pups, the strings . . . . FFS!
 13. At least Springsteen has a sense of humour about it all . . . . http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18868086
 14.
I remember back when I was at Uni ('79) Springsteen played a 3 hour plus concert in Newcastle. I only know this coz I could hear him as I walked past on my way to a local rock night elsewhere and he was still playing when I staggered back to my Halls at the end of the night. So he's got track record for overrunning
I had a similar experience in the 80s. Springsteen played Wembley Stadium on the same evening that Dire Straits played Wembley Arena. The Boss was supposed to finish first but overran so that both venues emptied at the same time. I've never seen Wembley so packed with people and it was literally shoulder-to-shoulder stuff getting to the tube station.
 15.
You can't please everyone, . . . .
Well, yes, but not playing any Beatles songs in The Cavern is not a great start is it?
 16.
Don't be fooled. Everything Boris says and does is carefully stage managed. He even arrives at events early so that his hair can be given that perfect tassled look before facing the public.
Boris for PM. I don't for one minute believe he'd do a better job than anyone else, but he'd be a lot more entertaining.
 17.
I'd probably only go to a Springsteen concert to watch Nils Lofgren play. There are only a few songs of Bruce's that I like. Would be much better to just wait until Nils Lofgren tours on his own. I remember when Nils played at our local high schools.
Now you're talking, though sadly I've only seen him once, a long time ago at the Hammersmith Odeon.
 18. Cool . . . and with some genuine provenance as well. Double cool.
 19. Good luck and knock 'em dead!
A very wise BCer (you know who you are) is like a mentor to me, and he said to remember that you are judging them as much as they are judging you... So make sure they are right for you as much as you are right for them.
Wise words indeed.
