I sincerely hope that none of you start grumbling if say someone starts 'not paying' for the goods or service that generates your income. After all if lots of people started following suite what could be done about it?
Happens all the time doesn't it? And when it does, people find another way of earning money, like get another job. But the music industry seems to be in denial about things changing so they're not even looking around for another 'job' - just trying to prolong the old one.

Music isn
Really? It's always been about money. Everything's about money, that's the world we live in.
The music business might be all about money, but I'd bet the majority of people on here pursue music because of their love for it and don't actually make any money from it at all.
-
Interestingly, while the music industry tries to prevent copyright theft, there's an active movement in the software world to actively promote 'open source' software and to freely licence such creative works. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyleft Perhaps it's because the music business is all about money and profit, whereas the open source software movement is a bit more idealistic: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/pragmatic.html

That article rather makes my point - indeed it acknowledges the problem of this "valueless age". All that hard work, yet someone thought it was a good idea to upload the album before it was even officially released. But moaning about it will change nothing - what we need are some solutions to stop it. Trouble is, there don't seem to be any.
It's a sad day when musicians no longer see the value of music.
Thing is, the music industry itself has devalued music. It wasn't so long ago that music CDs (and DVDs) were being given away free with sunday papers. Found this list - all big name artists, albeit not exactly cutting edge - but this is The Mail On Sunday http://www.discogs.com/label/The%20Mail%20On%20Sunday And this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/jun/29/business.pop So, if this sort of stuff can be given away with [s]toilet[/s] a sunday paper, what sort of message does that give out? Same with DVDs http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/4330826.stm http://www.free-uk-shares.co.uk/free-newspaper-dvd.html Kids are growing up in an environment where it's looking like a a mugs game to actually pay for any media.

If it was black and white then it would all be a lot simpler, but it isn't. It's not stealing because you don't deprive the owner of any goods. And if you wouldn't buy the music anyway (which would be the case, I'd bet, with the vast majority of downloaded music) then you're not even depriving the owner of a sale. The internet has been a game changer and the music business is struggling to cope with the change, but the genie is out of the bottle and it ain't going back anytime soon.

OK, so you can run them in parallel without problems using standard cables. The other thing to consider is the power handling. The amp output will be split 1/3rd to the 8 ohm cab and 2/3rds to the 4 ohm cab.
-
I'm assuming your amp requires a minimum of 4 ohms. Connecting 8 ohm and 4 ohm cabs in parallel will give you 2.7 ohms and will be bad for your amp. Connecting them in series will give you 12 ohms, which will be fine (for a solid state amp) but you'll need a special set of cables for such a connection and you'll get a lot less power output, so there really is no point in this at all.

Actually, my 1971 Massey Ferguson 135 is regarded as a classic tractor rather than a vintage tractor, but I don't really know why. All I do know is that, like Basschat, there's a whole world of specialist knowledge out there that the web can connect us to when necessary and it has saved me a lot of dosh when fixing stuff on the tractor. As for "tractor = vintage", that may be so in one sense, but modern tractors are packed with quite sophisticated electronics these days. For example, combine harvesters measure and record the crop yield on a metre-by-metre basis (using GPS) and that data is used to adjust the amount of fertiliser to be added, metre-by-metre, to the field for the next crop - all automatically of course. Er, it's a bit embarassing to admit I even know that sort of stuff really. Just one of my many anoraks.
My other half was sitting next to me while I was making my first post. Her response was, "Basschat, awwww! Bless." Followed by "are you making friends?" 15 minutes later.
You think Basschat is sad? You should try subscribing to a vintage tractor forum as well. (er, did I say that out loud? )

Yes - assuming the amp can drive a 4 ohm load, which is what the two cabs will 'present' to the amp. The amp's 500W will be split equally between the two cabs, so each will get 250W, which is OK for both of them although obviously the Aguilar will be at it's limit. But I doubt you'll be running the amp full-on anyway. So don't worry and enjoy the great sound!

Long time since I've been to Knebworth for a concert but the traffic coming out certainly was a nightmare. Last time I went I parked in Stevenage and walked the mile or so into Knebworth park, but I can't remember exactly where. I wonder if the car parking at Stevenage Leisure Park is available when concerts are on? There are no charges there whenever I go to Cineworld and I don't think there are time limits, though I guess that might be different on concert weekends.
You'd think so. But presumably there would be some arguments about whether the rig was set up properly and whether it should have fallen over, or been put somewhere a drunk could trip over it. And lawyers are expensive.
Yeah, I know what you mean, but when a drunk falls over a kerb and breaks his nose, he can't really sue the council for not having black/yellow warning marks along the kerb can he? The world's going mad.

I can't see why it matters - isn't is all about the music? -
If a drunk falls into something it must surely be the drunk's fault, so I'd be looking to sue him. If someone crashes into your car they don't claim on your insurance do they?
-
Yeah it's weird! Because surely when you have two cabs they both 'get' 250w each
They both 'get' 250W each because, together, they present a 4 ohm load to the amp so it 'sends out' 500W and that 500W is split evenly between the two cabs because they are both the same.
-
IIRC in a completely hypothetical world, a 500w amp at 4ohms would run 250w at 8ohms. In the real world though it's not that simple. I can't remember why though.
Because that hypothetical world example assumes the amp's efficiency is linear whereas in the real world it isn't, so the comparison isn't valid - apples and pears and all that.
I think this is true about any physical skill, In the middle ages anyone with a skill that took time to learn like carpenter, stone mason ect were at the upper end of the pay scale/society just for the fact that they could do what others could not do. Now it's undervalued having a skill and that includes entertainment.
I agree about the middle ages skill point, but it doesn't mean such things are undervalued today. It's more that things have changed such that things like the availability of pre-cut wood or bricks or music has changed, so their value has changed. Value can legitimately change over time, especially when the item in question has no intrinsic value.
I wonder how Louis originally bought the bass for so much lower than selling price though.. Fake? Stolen?! I worked at Fender and still couldn't have gotten one cheaper than £435!!
Perhaps his mummy and daddy bought it for him? Bless his little cotton socks.
Yeah but elf n safety is SUCH a burden on small businesses in this country, it's gawn mad. Damaging the odd punter is cheaper innit.
-
My being in another band: bit of an issue for someone else.
flyfisher replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
I'd reply that my priorities lie with my firm bookings. I'd bet the drummer isn't available every single day for the next month so what about his priorities? (not singling him out - such things apply to everyone). The point being that as long as you honour your first firm commitment (for either band) then what does it matter if you're in two bands - unless they expect you to cancel things at a moment's notice.
