That guy in the OP must be a pro, he's even got a special 'slap' bass - it says so on the bass itself.
I have to say, there's nothing so fragile as a band. It really all hangs together on personalities. If you can get the right set of people together, then it all works, whether they are good or intermediate players - what matters is a desire to *support* each other to the best of their ability.
I agree. There are no 'rules', no rights or wrongs about how a band must or must not operate. If everyone is of like mind then even the most bizarre behaviours will be OK and everyone will be happy. However, if everyone except you agrees to do things you don't like then, like it or not, and however unreasonable those things may seem to you, then you are the one out of step. It's a personality clash, not a matter of right or wrong, but when the clash can't be sorted out then it's a sign that things are not going to work out.

I play all mine. Er, oh yeah, I've only got one. Remind me to do something about that.

Agreed. Just be sure to turn all the amp and pedal gains right down before plugging it all together and then slowly bring them up while you learn how everything behaves. I know this is an egg-sucking lesson for Grandmothers but it never ceases to amaze me that people will happily plug stuff into amps on full volume etc. What amazes me even more is that they never seem to learn why there's a deafening click/buzz/howl as a result!

Seems a bit superfluous to add yet more positive feedback to a topic with 180+ similar posts but having just received a couple of obbm's instrument cables and a speaker cable I now know why they are so highly recommended. Thanks Dave.

Arrgh - our drummer can't make the gig. Seems it might not be his fault as our guitarist booked the gig without his confirmation. But none of that really matters - we're short of drummer with about a week to go before the gig. Our singer has found another drummer but we'll only have time for one short rehearsal. I guess we'll have to decide then, but my instinct is to tell the venue we can't make it, so they have the most time possible to find a replacement band. I'm really not happy playing under-rehearsed gigs, but the others seem less bothered and think 'we can muddle though', which I think is a bit unprofessional. What's the point in not playing at your best? Anyway, probably an impossible question to answer, but any thoughts on how long a new drummer would likely take to get up to speed? Will a single 2-hour rehearsal be sufficient for a 30 minute set? Also, should we just do our best to 'muddle through' and keep the booking commitment or cancel and let the venue know as soon as possible? Or should we wait and see how the rehearsal works out? It's not a paid gig.
It wasn't so much that he left the band, I think Waters decided to end it expecting (in his arrogance) that the band to split without him. I also believe that the other 3 were so frustrated at his level of involvement and self appointed control that they simply allowed him to go without argument.
Yeah, that may be a fairer summary. Mind you, 'allowed him to go without argument' - was there any practical alternative? I'd guess they all knew that trying to persuade him to stay would just feed his ego and make him even more difficult to work with.

. . . . like a lot of art.
I actually thought Dave came over worse, as he's the only one who won't finally bury the hatchet. Maybe that's just hindsight as we already know about Rog's ego trip... although to be fair was he wrong? I think "his" Floyd produced more interesting music than Dave's did.
Interesting point, though Rog was the one who left and then got miffed when the others just carried on without him - which was hardly surprising really, so surely Rog would have thought of that option? Who made the best new stuff after the split? I guess we could discuss that one until the cows come home, though I remember seeing Rog's Radio Kaos at Wembley many years ago and was not exactly overwhelmed. Personally, I reckon their best stuff was when they were together - as is so often the case when groups split but carry on separately. If I was forced to choose just one album I'd go for Wish You Were Here. I'd be really miffed that Echoes wasn't on it though!

It was interesting watching Waters more-or-less admit what an arse he'd been about the whole breakup thing, but it was good to see that he can admit it these days. No one is indispensible! Great stuff though; Echoes at Pompeii is a personal favourite.
FWIW, the way I use BC means the number of sub-forums is irrelevant to me. The only time I look for a specific forum is when I'm perusing the for sale areas. Other than that, it's 'view new posts' or the search function.
Yep, same for me. Plus, I don't read every 'new topic' anyway - the topic title tells me if I'm likely to be interested or be able to contribute if it's a specific question.

Wow! Looks like someone has been busy . . . nice work too!
I think your reading too much into it...............
I agree. The ad clearly says it's "BEING SOLD FOR MY DAD AS SPARES OR REPAIRS". I would guess there are millions of things sold on eBay on behalf of someone else who doesn't have an account or is not computer-savvy.
I think that many are wrongly impressed that an instrument will be better if it is so-called 'vintage'.
How can anyone be 'wrongly impressed' by such subjective things? If they like it, they like it. I know some people will like an old instrument simply because it is old, much like some people like draughty old wonky houses, but the bottom line is that they like them, for whatever reason.
Old instruments are exactly what they say they are - old instruments. Call them vintage if you like. Just don't think that they should be worth what some poor souls pay for them.
But surely they are only worth precisely what some 'poor soul' is willing to pay - for whatever reason. That's the very definition of their value.

If I'm understanding correctly, you want to replace the speaker with a dummy load so you can crank up the amp without annoying the neighbours and then record from the line out/effects send? Thing is though, won't the line out/effects send signal be from somewhere before the main amp? In which case cranking the amp won't make any difference to the recorded signal - dummy load or no dummy load. I may be wrong about this but I'd want to do some test recordings from the line out/effects send socket at different amp volume settings before going to the trouble of making up a dummy load.
-
I'm not familiar with the amp in question but these things are not usually assembled with anything more exotic than nuts, bolts and screws. If you're trying to completely remove a PCB then you'll probably have to remove some inter-board connecting cables, though even that may not be necessary if they are long enough. Just be careful, don't force anything and take it slowly. If you've never tried such things before, taking photos of each stage of disassembly can be useful when trying to remember how it all goes back together.
Bloody hell you're right, I hadn't noticed! Hence the extra £55.51.
Secondly If I wanted to daisy chain two cabs (a 410 and 115) and they were both 4 ohm I would then end up with an 8ohm load so get half power?
Be careful to properly understand the term 'daisy chain'. Amps often have two outputs and speakers often have two connectors. The amp outputs are almost certainly wired in parallel. There are two ways to connect two cabs to an amp with two parallel outputs: 1. connect each cab directly to the amp. 2. connect the amp to one cab and then connect that cab to the second cab. Physically, 1 is a parallel connection and 2 is a daisy chain. BUT, and it's a very important but, BOTH connections are electrically parallel. In the case of two 4-ohm cabs this means the amp will see a 2-ohm load, which will be a bad thing, possibly involving magic smoke. To connect two 4-ohm cabs and get an 8-ohm load, the cabs must be connected electrically in series. This will require special cables.

If the drummer doesn't want to play certain dates then start looking for a drummer who could fill-in (I know, easier said than done, but worth trying anyway). Then the ball is in the drummer's court rather than the rest of the band having to confront him and have a big row. The drummer can hardly complain if you all play a gig that he doesn't want to, plus you'll all be prepared for when baby-drummer arrives - although a baby in the house may encourage him to play every available gig just to get out of the house!
