1.
Alesis SR-16 user here, I only use it for jamming along with which it's perfect for as there is no waiting for computers to load up etc, just switch it on, choose a preset and get jamming
Ditto, on all points. I've also used it for band rehearsal when the drummer couldn't turn up and for a click-track when recording. I use it with a pair of footswitches which allows on/off and 'fill' control and I've heard of people using it for live performances. Seems to be far more capable than my modest needs.
2. You just need the appropriate cable. It would be worth confirming the wiring of the 1/4" jack socket though. It might be wired "TRS", which is a 3-way connection (tip, ring, sleeve) using a 'stereo' jack socket and would allow a balanced connection between the pre-amp and power amp. Balanced wiring is less susceptible to interference, though the advantage is generally less important with short cables. The pre-amp manual should describe the cabling requirements.
3. I bought Tony's Wharfedale Stage Monitor and arranged to collect it the following weekend when I happened to be in Nottingham. It was an absolute pleasure doing business with Tony; very responsive with initial questions (he even found me the required manual I was having trouble finding on the web), very flexible in the collection arrangements, and the unit itself was exactly as described. Thanks a lot Tony. Top man!
4. Apart from physical damage, what sort of damage could someone do to your rig? If the speakers are adequately matched to the amp then, presumably, the worst that could happen is that the volume is turned up to '11'. it might not sound great, but will it do any actual harm? In my (limited) experience, the gear-sharing thing is usually to do with stage-space and minimising change-over times between bands rather than some players not having, or not being bothered to bring, their own gear.
5. Is there anyway to buy without using paypal? (I don't have a paypal account and would prefer not to open one).
6.
Meeting done [snip]
Thanks very much for posting that description . . . so much to learn, so little time!
7. Don't introduce yourself until after we've played - gives you the opportunity to slip away quietly without embarrasment.
8. Legend! Pity the camera didn't concentrate more on Kaye. Interesting interview here: http://vimeo.com/26233284
9. One of our guitarists just emailed them and asked. I'd like to think they're a highly discerning venue and that they only take the best of the best . . . but they said yes to us.
10. Gulp! We're confirmed for 28th Sept . . . we'd better get rehearsing! Not sure about the set list yet but we're going for 100% originals.
11. Do they have fans? If so, they probably won't require any space between units. Otherwise, I'd expect the user manual to give some guidance about rack spacing.
12. "Socks should be worn at all times" Seems fair enough to me.
13. The other consideration is that daisy chaining cables means all the power is going down one cable but running two cables (using both amp outputs) splits the power across both of them, effectively giving you "thicker" speaker cables. I'm only really mentioning this for completeness and would be the first to agree that this is snake-oil territory, but it might be important if you subscribe to the notion of bigger-is-better when it comes to speaker cables. Personally I always use both amp outputs, purely for the resilience to a cable failure - not that I've ever actually had one.
14.
In fact in order to achieve a beautiful mix these days as a standard I have a compressor on every track & every group and a tape saturation emulation on nearly every track & every group too (and an eq and often as not a gate too). Back in the day the tape would have done a lot of that work for me.
Interesting stuff. Can you expand a bit on why you use a compressor and a tape saturation emulation if they are both ways of achieving the same thing?
15. The loudness war has also spread to TV adverts - or am I the only one who gets annoyed when the ads are far louder than the programme? Actually, I don't get that annoyed because I just hit the mute button . . . which rather defeats the obejective of the advertisers in the first place.
16. Thanks for the insight guys. When I said a big step-up I meant for us really. We're used to not being paid but we're not used to be playing to audiences that have paid to see us - well, get into the venue anyway. So some added pressure there. It's a big step for us in terms of getting our own stuff out there - we've done a fair bit of songwriting this year and I think we should be able to play about 45 minutes of originals, which we might as well if we're not getting paid. Not sure of the precise details yet but it's looking like an early October wednesday night (probably when they give some unknow quantities a chance ). If I'm feeling brave enough I'll post the date when it's confirmed! Thanks again.
17. Has anyone played The Horn in St Albans? I've never been there but it bills itself as 'Hertfordshire's largest live music venue'. It looks like we may be playing there next month so I'm wondering what to expect. Might be a big step-up for us TBH - hope it's not too big a step!
18. I can sort of understand deposits being non-refundable in cases where the customer just changes their mind about a purchase, but in this case there would seem to be a product specification issue. Was it ever discovered why the cab in question was far heavier than the one that you already had?
19. Ouch indeed. No RCDs in the consumer unit then.
20.
And cabs is nominal impedance anyway, so isn't really impedance,
[pendantry mode] Almost. Impedance is impedance. There's nothing particularly special about loudspeakers. The 'nominal' refers the fact that the actual impedance is dependent on the frequency and will vary across the audio spectrum. It's a bit like doing a 'nominal' speed of 60mph on a motorway. Sometimes it might be 58mph, sometimes it might be 61mph, but it's close enough to be called 60mph. [/pedantry mode]
21. If you're a pro musician in a pro band then you should play anywhere (within reason). If it's an amateur band doing it for personal enjoyment then I'd say it was reasonable not to do it. Personal choice. Best to talk it over with bandmates and let them know your feelings, of course, but ultimately, why be forced in to doing something you won't enjoy?
