I'm filming all this on my smartphone . . .

Agreed. TBH I was a bit surprised about the 'female bassist' thread as I thought we'd moved beyond that sort of irrelevance. Would a thread about favourite black bassists go down well? Or how about favourite bassists under 5 ft tall? Or favourite cross-dressing Korean bassists? Er, hang on . . . . .

I agree that anything that screws up the audience experience is a bad thing and holding up a bloody great iPad is pretty bad form. Still, Google Glass and similar tech will soon do away with the need for all that and people will be able to record everything they can see and hear. Mind you, there is now so much online media available to us these days that it would be possible to spend an entire lifetime just reliving the experiences of other people rather than actually experience anything first hand. But I guess some people would be quite happy with that, who knows? It's a funny old world. The Matrix anyone?
Has anyone ever re watched the clips at home after? You cant hear the music and the images are crap at best, just watch the show or wait for the dvd to come out please
Exactly, which is presumably why audience numbers haven't declined since the internet arrived (have they?). This sort of thing is additional to the fans experience, it doesn't replace anything and therefore doesn't erode the artist's earnings. Remember when home taping was going to kill music? Remember when video tape was going to kill cinema? Remember when recordable CDs were going to kill music (again). Remember when downloading was going to kill music (again). Seems to me that music is rather more resilient than people give it credit for, but the music business just doesn't like not being in total control. Quite funny, really, when loads of 'angry young bands' drone on about 'sticking it to the man' but don't like it when 'the man' sticks it on them. The internet, home recording, smartphones, downloading . . . . none of it is going away so just man-up and learn to deal with it. Actually, the fact that this story involves a 'rock dinosaur' is probably germane to the whole fiasco. Younger bands are probably already adapting to such things.
I will concede that liking a player over another influences which one you would prefer to listen to. It is all subjective. Rush, being one of the most over rated bands in my opinion, for example. There was a poll that put Neil Peart as the best ever drummer. I would say that he isn`t in the same league as Buddy Rich. Is Clapton or Hendrix (who was voted best ever guitarist) better than Al Di Meola? Is Geddy Lee better than James Jamerson. An NME poll puts Kim Deal in the top 40, but Geddy Lee doesn`t feature at all. http://www.nme.com/p...rs/345517/1/1#2 At the end of the day, it is more of a popularity thing, as Jeff Berlin, who is very boring, but probably better than 90% of the bassists featured, doesn`t get a mention.
Yep, it's all about popularity really. I don't mean that in a pejorative way because what else really matters? If you don't actually like the end result of someone's time/effort/skill/whatever, whether they be an musician, a painter, a writer, an actor, a winemaker, or whatever, then they haven't connected with you and the whole exercise is pointless. To you. That's not to say their endeavours are not of value to anyone else, just not to you.
I think this is summed up by videos, live or otherwise, on Youtube of an artists material with "I don't own this, no copyright infringement intended!" in the description. Many, many people do not understand the concept of intellectual property (posting the video is copyright infringement, of course) and making a copy of a recording or a live performance without the permission of the performers or writers is also copyright infringement.
Interesting that a live performance is only possible with the participation of an audience. Does that give them any performing rights? (I guess the ticket T&Cs waive them anyway). This sort of minor fracas is just another example of the music business coming to terms with the fact that they can no longer have total control over what, how and when people listen to music.
-
Fair point, and I can also appreciate good musicianship, but I'd say that's a rather different thing to liking a particular player more than another.
Yeah, and the choice should be mine as to what Ts&Cs I adhere to (if any) when I apply for a credit card, mortgage, energy supplier, loan for a car, book loan from the library etc. They knew the score before they went through the gates! The "choice is, buy a ticket & adhere to Ts&Cs, or, don't buy a ticket.
I agree with that in principle, but in the world of contract law there is such a thing as unfair T&Cs and in the world of the bleedin' obvious there are things you just know are going to happen however much you wish it wouldn't, such as someone videoing a concert with a smartphone.
-
Unless they've never seen any smartphone video footage before, I doubt they are hoping for a good recording - although who knows what passes for 'good recording' these days?
yeah I don't get it. I'll maybe take one or two photos... but..... why on earth do people want to watch the life they are living through a b****y 2 inch screen is utterly beyond me.
What is there to get? They want to and they can. Why does anyone do anything?
-
I think it's a bit strange to ask which bassist (or any musician really) you prefer when I suspect the answer is likely to be largely determined by the type of music they play and whether you like it or not. I love Pino's recent stuff with John Mayer (among other things) but I doubt that would mean I'd love to hear him playing rap. In other words, I don't really care how good a player is if they're not playing stuff I like. And why would I?

I wonder how Keef would have handled the situation . . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyK0y02HvVc
Surely it's a case of compulsory handing-in of phones at the door? A checkout system as with coats, and you get a ticket - pick it up as you leave.
While that is actually the only way this sort of thing can be prevented, the practicalities will ensure it never happens given that 99% of the audience will have a mobile phone.
-
BTW, wasn't it the Grateful Dead who expressly encouraged people to bootleg their concerts?
-
For the record, I entirely agree with the previous points about smartphone videos being crappy quality so why on earth bother, but surely that's a decision for the person concerned to decide? Up to them if it doesn't,t affect anyone else. Similarly, if they want to view a concert through a crappy screen then that's their choice - doesn't force anyone else to do the same does it? I also agree about it being unacceptable to block out other people's view. Simple good manners really, but then so is not singing along badly and drunkenly, standing up ( if a seated venue) or hoiking someone onto shoulders. Again, discrete use of smartphones shouldn't affect anyone else. Frampton is of the era where recordings of concerts were pretty much impossible and artists and record companies had total control over things (and made punters pay through the nose for the privilege of seeing them, still do really). Well those days are long gone and while it might be feasible to check bags for DSLRs or camcorders it's simply not feasible, or frankly acceptable, to ban smartphones. So artists might not like it but they'd better get used to it because it ain't going to change. Indeed, technologies such as Google Glass are only going to make such recordings even easier.
-
I can see both sides of this issue. Frampton clearly doesn't like it and I suppose he has every right to impose whatever conditions he wants at his concerts. On the other hand, the fans are paying good money to support his lifestyle so why shouldn't they be able to take photos or video as a poor quality memento of what is a special event for them? These 'stars' are not doing anything inherently important and they are only in their positions because of their fans. Phones seem to arouse strong emotions in people. I was once on a train and someone opposite was talking to someone on their mobile phone in a perfectly normal voice. The guy next to me started tutting loudly, rolling his eyes, staring at the person on the phone, looking at other passengers to register his disgust etc. in fact, he was making more of an exhibition of himself than the person on the phone! I found his reaction very odd indeed. If two people in the same carriage had been talking to each other I doubt there would have been the same reaction.

Rod Stewart BBC4 tonight - Friday 8th August

I'd only watch it for the Faces. Fantastic band . . . Always seemed on the verge of losing it yet somehow always held things together. Wonderfully 'loose' but tight at the same time. -
Over thinking when playing - is it just me?
flyfisher replied to Osiris's topic in General Discussion
I've sometime experienced this. Sometimes with newish songs where I've completely blanked how to start. Because of this, I always write the first note to be played on my set list and sometimes the first few chords so I don't have this problem so often these days. Other times, I suddenly realise I can't remember how to play the chorus or a middle-8 but when I get to it I seem to play it OK. I guess that's 'muscle memory' cutting in. It's quite odd really, but in a good way. That's not to say I never screw up, but I've not discerned any particular pattern or reason for it - well, apart from lack of talent I guess -
Surely if it was any good he wouldn't be wanting to sell it.

rewiring my bass is this possible?
flyfisher replied to 0175westwood29's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yeah, I tried adding a switch to my P bass once to send the pickup directly to the output jack, made it sound much brighter, I wasn't a fan! You could probably remedy that by wiring in a fixed resistor if you still wanted to present a load to the pickups.
Yes - if the preferred tone is right at one 'end' of the pot, or by using two resistors to more precisely replicate the tone from a mid-way pot position. Not particularly difficult if you have a decent ohm meter and are ok with soldering. -
Shops on eBay selling stuff they don't have !
flyfisher replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
No need to apologise for being annoyed, 10 weeks is appalling and should have been made clear when you placed the order, or at the very least by the next day. But I think that's a slightly different issue than online shops advertising stuff they don't have in their own physical stock. -

flyfisher replied to ambient's topic in General Discussion
Surely the only thing that matters is if the goods arrive in good time? I can't see anything wrong with 'drop-shipping' direct from the original supplier. Indeed, one could ask what is the point of an online retailer taking delivery of something so they can then open it up, check it, put it on their shelf, then re-package it and send it to an online customer. Stock is only important if someone wants to go to a physical shop and look at the physical item. -
Yeah, but that was when 6d was really worth something and you could buy a house, a new car, a new bass and full rig and still have change to take the missus out to the cinema with a slap-up meal afterwards. Ah, the good old days.
