These sort of things are coming down in price so much that doubling up isn't such an outlandish idea. After all, it would be cheaper than a spare bass and I'd bet plenty of BCer's are quite happy to splash out on those!

  7. I bought a TC BH250 as a small, light backup for my Ashdown amp and also because the toneprint thing sounded like fun. After a couple of weeks playing with toneprints I've never used that feature since but the amp itself became my main amp because it's so light and compact to carry around that I can no longer be bothered to lug my Ashdown gear to most gigs. So, perversely, buying a backup amp has left me without a backup amp, though it did start me on the road to using lighter gear for which I am eternally grateful!

  10. Unfortunately, the customer is not [i]always [/i]right. Fairness works both ways. Anyway, there's still time to send a similar email to Thomann and see what they have to say about it - he's their customer after all.
  11. If you buy a pint of milk from a shop and it's off, do you complain to the farmer or do you take it up with the shop? For all we (or Warwick) know, the strings might have sat in the retailer's lock-up for 20 years, which is hardly Warwick's fault is it? Your contract is with the seller, not the brand owner, and that should be the first step in the complaints procedure. Escalate if necessary, by all means, but it's only fair to give the seller the opportunity to fix things first.
  12. I agree with the single socket thing, but I find that daisy-chaining power strips is more convenient than having a single multiway strip. I guess a single one is OK if you make up custom-length mains cables, but multiple socket strips means it's easy to take power outlets to where they are actually needed. Horses for courses I guess.
  13. Hmm. One minute we're slagging off tribute bands because 'what's the point playing a carbon copy' and the next minute we're slagging off someone wanting their own slant on a song. Sounds to me that this is less about how to play the song and more about a personality clash. I guess it also depends on whose band it is.

  16. I bought a couple of SM58s from Dave. Easy transaction, good comms, well packaged . . . . But then I'd bought from him before so knew what to expect and he didn't disappoint. Deal with confidence! Thanks Dave.
  17. While I agree with the basic gist, I'd say the same thing applies to any instrument, not just the bass. It's that hard-to-define thing that separates good musicians from great musicians and is probably the difference between flawless but soul-less technical excellence and simplicity loaded with emotion. And let's face it, while I'm sure we can all admire technical excellence, what we really want from music is that emotional response, the thing that can bring tears to the eyes.
  18. Isn't proof the real issue here?. If someone can prove they wrote a lyric, melody, bassline, whatever, then they have the copyright of that work. Sorting such things out from recollections and old tapes from 20 years ago might be tricky. Supposing someone simply claimed they wrote the entire song, how can it be proved/disproved? I've always thought copyright is automatic and doesn't have to be registered as such.
  19. No idea really, but I'd expect them to be able to give you an estimated time almost immediately. I'd have pestered them for an estimated return date after a few days. And don't let the shop fob you off. Your 'contract' is with the shop and it's [u]their[/u] responsibility to fix what they sold you. Sure, they might get Laney to do the repairs, which is fair enough, but it's still the shop's responsibility to make it happen to your satisfaction. It's the shop that should be chasing Laney so that they can keep their customer (i.e. you) happy. Three weeks with no explanation about what's going on doesn't seem like great customer service to me.

  22. What is going to be the main source of music - cd player, ipod, smartphone, streaming from PC, etc? What model is the Creative Labs speaker system and what inputs does it have? What model is the TV and what inputs does it have? This info would give the panel a bit more info to stir their creative juices
  23. Yes, that sentence made me smile I'm torn about this sort of thing. On the one hand it's a fugly looking thing and a waste of a good piece of firewood but on the other hand the guy has at least shown some inventiveness and initiative so good luck to him. I wonder what the reaction would have been if eBay had been around when Leo put together his first electric bass?

An alternative to soldering is crimping, which is widely used in industry and produces highly reliable joints, but it requires the appropriate connectors and the proper crimping tool so is not generally as convenient for the DIYer. Soldering really isn't very difficult and it only takes a little time to get the hang of it. It's nowhere near as difficult as learning to play bass!
