1.
With top notch gear it's more what you don't hear than what you do, I A/B 'd my top end Denon amp alongside a British built Exposure amp, the Exposure just sounded so much cleaner and gave so much more room than the Denon.....I no longer own the Denon....
But did you A/B it blindly, i.e. with someone else switching between systems and you not knowing which was which?
2. I suspect the use of batteries was less to do with heavy currents than to ensure a perfectly clean DC power supply with no mains ripple or regulator 'noise'. I also suspect it made no discernable audible difference.
Oh, and the speaker cables were not touching the floor but sat on metal discs holding them clear.
Did you miss out a 'dear' in that sentence?
3. Yep, a complete piss-take would show them. I wonder if they'd even notice though.
4.
I think you've mistaken this for a genuine music competition? It will make absolutely no difference if Freddy Mercury comes back from the dead and we put him in. It is uttery impossible for us to win, everyone hates us.
Yep! Anyway, what IS the point of Eurovision? Maybe we should just not bother to enter at all?
5. Interesting short programme on R4 at 9:45am today. Will no doubt be available on iPlayer later. http://www.bbc.co.uk...rammes/b03whqb5
6. Nice review. Can you try a pub in Chelmsford or Southend next for a comparison?
7. That's a fair point - I didn't really think of it that way as I was never into all that 'angry yoof' stuff.
8. But isn't that the thing with musicians? As long as they remain physically able, their playing should really just get better and better, or at least not decline. I love watching a bunch of old muso's at the top of their game just having effortless fun playing.
9.
Some folks will upload pics of a hired model to advertise their gear, but there is a line not to cross... http://r.ebay.com/lyx6uD
She could be a hired model . ... .
10. I think this is more about respect and politeness than hypocrisy. I can't stand opera. Does that make it just not my thing, or a pile of sh1t?
11. I think the point here is that it's somewhat disrespectful to label an artist or their music as 'dire bland bilge' simply because you don't happen to like it yourself. Especially musicians on a musicians' forum.
12. Check out the specs of any dehumidifier you may think of getting, some types don't work very well at low temperatures. Also, if it's not being used in a normal living area, consider getting one with a drain pipe unless you want to be regularly emptying the reservoir.
13.
Here you go... maybe this ones less cryptic...
Would this be less even less cryptic?
14.
If you're going to try and palm it off on somebody else I'd do it quick, last I heard, the Government were talking of stopping production of the fifty pound note.
Only the Houblon one . . . .
All those BCers with a mattress full of £50s should check them carefully because the 'Houblon' fifty is being withdrawn at the end of April. I was just looking for official advice about forgeries and came across that news in a Bank of England FAQ here: http://www.bankofeng...about/faqs.aspx A further search revealed that this was all over the news last month, though I didn't notice it at the time. 15. Tax evasion by using cash must be pretty small in the grand scheme of things though. Even if your builder will [s]knock off the VAT[/s] give you a 20% discount for cash, how much does everyone regularly spend on building work or similar? The really big tax evasion schemes, legal or not, are not likely to involve cash because what can most people do with millions in a suitcase anyway - unless they have a big drugs or gambling habit - or both But yes, I can see the why governments would like to see cash disappear.
16.
Just a quick defense of mrtcat. I think we have to be clear that some retailers, brands etc do not want to get onto forums for numerous reasons, some reasonable, some unreasonable. Often dialogue takes place behind the scenes and it is up to the individual posting to decide, based on the dealers (sometime overdue) response whether 'naming and shaming' is a reasonable response or whether a one off cock up on behalf of an otherwise responsible dealer is a reason to shame them.
That's fair comment, but when the OP entitles the thread "really hacked off now" and goes on to explain how the retailer had been less than honest about when the amp had been sent away for repair then what's the point of posting at all if they really believe it's a one-off cock up? If they do decide to post and ask for advice then it's a bit much to get all upset about some of the advice they are offered. I reckon we're all grown up enough to accept that things sometimes go wrong but the issue here is how the people involved deal with it. I've had some absolutely fantastic customer service when things I've bought have gone wrong and the retailers concerned have almost taken it as a personal embarrassment and moved heaven and earth to sort it out and leave me happy. THAT'S what customer service is all about, not making you feel as if you're an inconvenience and they'll get around to looking at it when they can find the time.
17. Certainly sounds like a retailer problem to me and it's these sort of situation where we really find out how good they are and how seriously they regard their customers. leaving a faulty amp lying around for three weeks before bothering to send it for repair seems pretty shoddy to me. They've let their customer down and they've let their supplier down. Seems unfair to give the retailer anonymity at the expense of Hartke.
18. Maybe you could write a song about a shyster publican passing off fake £50 notes? Include a catchy chorus that the punters can sing along to while pointing to the bar. Something like 'B@stard, b@stard, what a fecking b@stard'. I offer that without strings, no royalties required
19. Ha! That's exactly how I got involved in my second band. I've not yet had a clash of priorities but I have played quite a few places with both bands.
20.
Nothing is universally adored and everything is cool only to a minority (a full stadium fourteen nights in a row is still a minority, when you think about it as a percentage of the listening population). It is just a case of whether that minority is large enough or sufficiently vocal to create the illusion of universality.
Yes, it's easy for a self-selected bunch of BCers to forget that music is a 'minority sport' when considered across the entire population. A UK number one hit single seems to need around 100,000 sales . . . not a lot compared to 22 million households and 65m people. http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=161442&st=0&start=0
21. I wouldn't worry about it. There's no reason why you should like popular artists. You've obviously listened to enough of their material to have given it a fair shot and it hasn't clicked so just move on and find something else you can really enjoy. I'm sure we could all name very popular bands that we just 'don't get'. Radiohead would be one of my examples and the regular Beatles threads on here prove that even the most popular band in music history (yeah, ok, but give me a bit of slack on this one ) have plenty of people who don't really 'get them' as well as people who downright don't like them in any respect. It's all subjective.
22. Excellent tutorial - thanks for taking the time to post that. I may print it out and leave it in my workshop - not that I do any luthiering but I'm always fiddling with bits of wood and I really should buy a honing guide instead of doing things by eye (badly). I also had never thought of finishing off with a leather strop. I've seen them used with razors but never thought of using one on chisels. It always amazes me how leather can sharpen steel! Where did you buy your strop?
