1. I read that and am worried that they'll ban lithium batteries from being carried at all, which will bugger up people taking holiday photos and videos. Mind you, banning them in aircraft might be a problem for Boeing's Dreamliner: http://gizmodo.com/d...atch-1501118380 And just wait until the roads are full of lithium batteries on wheels.
 2. So let me get this right. They don't mime on principle, er, except when they mime because they want to. Got it.
 3.
If you could get the Android OS on an iPhone the world would be a happy place
http://www.techhive....our_iphone.html http://lifehacker.com/5693309/how-to-install-android-on-an-iphone-in-six-easy-steps
 4. Poor guys. All that agonising over whether to allow themselves to be forced to mime.
 5.
That quote about kitchens ain't one from me mate.
I know, it was TimR. Not sure how that happened - apart from being my fault, obviously! My apologies and now corrected.
Most people's knee jerk reactions that it's red tape and a money making opportunity are normally based on bullshit.
Agreed, suggesting a problem of awareness somewhere.
 6.
How many of us inspect the kitchens in a restaurant before we eat there?
Depends on the restaurant. I've had a chef insist on showing me around his kitchen. As I've said before, it's pretty much impossible to argue about any of these things on safety grounds, or about the extra requirements that will be required in five years time, and probably even more after that. So, given that it's all eminently sensible, it's ironic how the knee-jerk reaction of most people is that it's all just more red tape and an excuse for making money. it's doesn;t seem as if there's much popular support for it all. Odd really. Edited to correctly attribute the quotation
 7.
In the wider context of where CD buying is headed, would you have to? Yesterday I was looking for a track on Amazon. I had a choice, an mp3 of the one track for 99p, the entire album as mp3s for £6.50, or the CD of the album, plus all the tracks as mp3s, for £4.50. I went for the latter. Along the way I downloaded the Amazon Cloud Player and found that every album I ever bought from them is there on my account as downloadable mp3s. I remember I did have an email about it a while ago, but didn't really take on board what they were offering. For all they know, I could have sold, broken, given away or lost all of those albums.
Well you wouldn't have to delete the ripped copy, but I see it as effectively being the 'licence' to listen to that music. Selling on the CD after making a copy is tantamount to downloading for free - and we all know how popular that is around these here parts. Interesting about download sales falling. There was also a report the other day about iPods becoming obsolete (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25927366) Amazing how things change so quickly these days.
 8. Objection, your honour. Hypothetical question and not relevant to this case. We're discussing actual competence, not paper qualifications. Objection your honour. Irrelevant question. We don't observe the jury in their deliberations but we trust them to do what we ask of them based on their competence, otherwise everyone would require to be watched over while doing their jobs. I see no other Judges in this court observing your honour, though I don't doubt your competence. (Court is now adjourned while the Judge has a quiet word with me )
 9.
Forgot to mention that I too , transfer the content to my mac. Stuff I have to keep; Metallica binge + puge( VHS ) was a leaving do pressie. Tangerine dream Tangents, Slayer and sod have gotta go , as has queensryche;) What got me thinking, was when I got the deluxe warrior on the edge of time (hawkwind). At the end o the day, I purchased another cardboard box
of course, you'll be deleting the ripped copies from your mac when you sell the original CDs . . . . .
 10.
It's not my legal responsibility to check someone else's equipment. It's their responsibility as owner of a premises where the public will be present to comply with the law.
Really? I thought everyone has a duty of care for their own actions? Besides, who cares whose faull it is if you electrocute yourself by plugging into a faulty PA or mains socket. I suppose it'll give your family someone to blame, but it won't help you will it?
It's my responsibility to make sure that equipment I own and operate complies.
So how can you be sure your equipment complies as soon as you plug it into an unknown mains socket or PA? Again, it might be someone else's responsibility but shouldn't we be more concerned with the danger rather than the blame? Yes, these are daft and extreme examples, but that's how daft and extreme these things get when examined in minute detail and we embrace a blame culture along with associated liabilities.
 11.
how would you prove your competence in court?
Call an expert witness in the field of PAT testing into the dock, explain in detail the testing process you've carried out on your own equipment and the test equipment you've used and ask the expert witness to confirm that you have carried out your testing in a competent manner. Easy.
 12.
Anybody else have this problem?
I also only buy CDs, but I immediately rip them to a PC. When I've collected another 10 or so, I put them in the attic along with all the others, so shelf space is rarely a problem.
 13. @TimR I understand all that. It was xilddx's comment that confused me. Oggiesnr is right that PAT testing is just a cost of 'doing business' and there's no arguing against it really, but there comes to a point where the cost of doing business, both the cost and hassle, eventually becomes more trouble than it's worth. Camels and straws and all that. Thankfully, we've never been asked for PAT certificates. Do any bands ever ask to see the venue's certificate of electrical safety or the PA system certification? After all, it's all very well to check your own gear for, say, earth continuity, but how do you know the venue wiring is providing an earth connection. Where does it all end?
 14. Does the 'portable equipment' actually have to be connected though?
 15.
We're talking removable electrical cables here, not safety testing your amp or other equipment which requires more training and expertise.
Why do they call it 'Portable Applicance Testing' if it's actually only 'mains lead testing'?
 16. Thing is, stuff like the superbowl, or even TOTP come to that, is more a piece of theatre than a display of musical prowess. I doubt the crowd cared very much and it certainly makes the whole show a lot less complicated than if they had to worry about engineering live sound. Anyway, I saw the chilies at Earls Court many years ago and their sound was pretty crappy to be honest. Possibly the venue, but still crappy for whatever reason.
 17. I doubt his lawyers care very much either way, I bet they still made a nice pile of cash for services rendered.
 18.
Yes, I went and jammed with a really good bunch of musicians recently. They meet up once a week and rehearse but are not interested in actually gigging. They do play in other bands so it's not a phobia or anything. Very strange. Although I enjoyed playing with them, I told them I had other commitments.
I can't see anything strange about not wanting to gig. Can't it be all about the music instead of the performance? The Beatles soon got fed up with gigging and it didn't seem to hold them back.
 19. Do we really imagine that people watch some handheld smartphone footage of a concert and think to themselves 'that was good, no need to see them myself now'? I doubt anyone in the industry is really stupid enough to believe that sort of argument, though I accept it's a convenient and headline-grabbing way of putting a figure on their supposed losses. Fact is, people will click on a crappy YouTube video if it's there but won't really care if it's not there. There's no lost revenue involved.
 20.
Try taking advantage of the problem: http://littleguitarw...-natural-twist/
Interesting idea. Reminds me of the 'cranked shaft' paddles that many kayakers use to reduce bending stress on their wrists.
 21. Of course he's legally entitled to do such things, but it doesn't seem to make him particularly popular does it?
 22. I'm not sure that perpendicularity is necessarily a good thing. Unless the bass body was exactly symmetrical in terms of mass distribution around the line of the next, then I think a hanger would cause some sideways force on the neck. I reckon the best arrangement is for the hanger to be able to pivot so the bass effectively hangs like a pendulum. Only a guess though, and I still think that the tension of the strings will vastly exceed the effect of gravity acting on the body.
 23. I can't see how hanging a bass can cause such problems. If you think about it a bass body will weigh around 7lbs, which will be pulling the body away from the neck, but the combined tension of the strings will be pulling the body towards the neck with a far, far greater force. In short, if the bass is warped, it's far more likely to be due to the string tension than a wall hanger.
 24. Not sure about the 'human' thing, they are just normal people really who happen to have a particular skill. Most people have specific skills and expertise but only a few of those skills are so widely admired as musical ability. Fair enough. So when we hear a musician, or group of them, making music that we greatly admire, we have a tendency to get carried away and start to admire the person as well, even though we generally know almost nothing about them. Indeed, it's possible that musicians/celebrities are actually more likely than most to be rather unpleasant people if they succumb to their celebrity status and take advantage of their fans, as we're currently seeing played out in the courts, not to mention the likes of Gary Glitter, Ian Watkins etc. Great musicians are great musicians, but let's not get carried away that they are all wonderful, saintly, paragons of virtue.
 25. Seems like a complete c**t to me. Still, I guess there's no law that say great musicians have to be nice people.
