Regarding the actual specifications, the speaker manufacturers should be able to quote operating and storage conditions. Condensation issues can be controlled by placing the cabs in a sealed bin-bag if they really have to be moved from cold storage straight into a warm humid environment. Bear in mind that while a cab cover will provide physical protection, no amount of insulation will keep it warm when stored in a cold place. Insulation can only slow down the speed of heat transfer (cold or warm) but ultimately everything will end up at the ambient temperature.

Good post. I guess there is no such thing as a 'standard' artist/celeb so perhaps it,s not surprising that some end up with inflated egos and up their own arse, which is a real shame because what's the point? They've already been elevated into multi-millionaire star status by their fans so would it really hurt that much to give them a bit of slack when it will not materially affect their own lives one iota? Just a bit of graciousness by way of thanks really. Of course he is legally entitled to protect his stuff but having the law on his side doesn't mean he isn't also just being an arse.
'One' is splendidly multi-purpose and has spared me all sorts of trouble in the past. But one wonders whether others consider one a perfumed ponce for using it.
Funny you should mention that. I'm not normally prone to self-consciousness but using 'one', which as you rightly point out is perfect for so many occasions, does seem a tad pretentious. Shame really.
Err, no? Allow me to explain why it isn't a problem - I wasn't talking about you posting this topic, I was talking about people posting videos of Prince's gigs online.
Fair enough. But apart from Dad's point, as you specifically quoted me, I assumed (quite reasonably I think) that you were addressing the question to me. Tricky things forums. Still, no harm done.
A guy I'm friends with on Facebook is a massive Prince fan - He's made covers of his songs, and they just get taken down. He/his label are very particular about making sure there is no unwarranted sharing of their music. Fans of his are well aware of that. I'm not sure why you would post things like that when you know his position on these things.
Because I'm not interested in HIS position, which is quite obvious, I'm interesting in OUR views on the subject. That's why I asked "what do WE think . . . ". Is that a problem?
On 'Later' the other week, I noticed the same thing....and also the similarity between Dave and Maurice Gibb, especially with the hat he was wearing!
Trouble is, 'Jeff & Maurice' doesn't have quite the same ring about it. Great pair of guys though, and seemingly held in very esteem by their peers, which says it all really.

So I wrote a little article on my blog....
flyfisher replied to jimcroisdale's topic in Amps and Cabs
The number of times we get posts on here asking 'basic' stuff about ohms of multiple cabs suggests that there are quite a few people out there who don't know this stuff. And why should they? - we're not born knowing about Ohm's law so we have to learn about it and asking questions seems perfectly reasonable to me, as is proactively explaining such things as in this example. I wouldn't worry about it, she's the one with the problem. -
A thought for folk who question what it is that artists actually ' lose '. I saw an old movie starring Alec 'I've got a big light sabre' Guiness called 'The Card' in which he comes across a fisherman at the seaside bemoaning the fact that his boat is buggered and he can't make a living. Alec pays for the boat fixing and employs the fisherman to take tourists on trips around the bay. Makes a fortune. He's sitting counting his brass when the fisdhetman says to him ' that's a lot of money for doing nothing'. 'But I did do something' says Alec. ' I thought of it'.
Sounds like a defence for banker's bonuses. It also reminds me of this old joke: A multi-million dollar power plant had mysteriously ground to a halt. All efforts to restart it had failed and an expert was brought in. After studying the problem for a few minutes he took a hammer and hit one of the valves. With a rumble, the plant came back to life. Incredulous glances were shared, grateful cries and high-fives were exchanged. Later, the expert’s bill arrived for the amount of $10,000.00. The outraged executive in charge thought “All he did was hit a valve with a hammer, this bill is ridiculous.” he asked for an itemized breakdown and the consultant responded with a bill that read: “Hitting valve with hammer $10.00. Knowing which valve to hit: $9,990.00.”
In a similar vein; in this case he could argue that he's lost the revenue from the proposed film because he's "had to" cancel it due to the plot being leaked. http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-25923343
Yes, I saw that story. It's all very tricky, though leaking a clearly confidential document seems worse than posting a video of an actual performance, to me anyway. it'll be interesting to see what legal precedents are set by these cases - assuming they actually get as far as a firm verdict.
-
But stealing what? What has the person concerned been deprived of? What is their actual loss?
-
Speaking of suing, perhaps there are some lawyers out there who could confirm or correct my understanding that you can only sue for substantiated damages. Thus, for example, if I was playing football (fat chance!) and broke someone's window I could only be sued for the cost of the repairs, i.e. compensation for what was actually lost. I couldn't be sued for £1m just because the window's owner got stroppy about it. So, how exactly do we think Prince has been damaged by people posting videos of his gigs on YouTube? Not vague, fanciful, or hypothetical damage but actual substantiated and provable damage.

Interesting how times change. -
Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
flyfisher replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
I know what you mean, but who would want a 'brick' of a mobile phone or a computer running DOS these days? My attic is full of stuff that is all in perfect working order that nobody wants any more. Vintage amplifiers are the exception rather than the rule. -
Class D amps - do the manufacturers know what they are trying to do?
flyfisher replied to LukeFRC's topic in Amps and Cabs
That's true, but it's the same high levels of integration and production techniques that have brought us affordable computers, smartphones and the like. -
I doubt that any glue will work unless you have unpainted brick/block walls. All the glue will do is fix the hanger to the paint or the wallpaper and I wouldn't trust either to hold my bass.

10 Things That Need To Change To Save Independent Venues
flyfisher replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Absolutely. I suppose there must be some people out there who embrace change and the opportunities it can bring, but mostly we only hear about people whinging about how 'fings ain't wot they used to be' and how it would be wonderful to turn back the clock . . . pubs, village shops, high street shops, milkmen, vinyl records . . . . -
I see no reason to treat rich guys differently to poor ones .
That's a very enlightened viewpoint, though one that people in general don't seem to subscribe to. The popularity of progressive taxation would be one example where society deems that rich people should pay higher rates of tax than anyone else. The thing that intrigues me the most about this is if Prince is so concerned about people posting smartphone videos of his concerts, why does he bother to gig at all? Is the money really that much more important than the music or is it some sort of power madness thing?
Bootlegs from crappy phone recordings at gigs are a weird issue. I'd have every sympathy with Prince about distribution of original material - DVD rips / music rips etc. But amateur bootlegs....? He'd be better off following Metallica's example - you can get a 'desk-mix' from them of almost every show they did over the last few years, usually only the day after the gig. I still have old tapes from going to Donington 20 years ago. Well dodgy sound, but the occasional blinding song audible out of the sound of airborne bottles of piss. Happy days!
Yep, that's pretty much my take on it. I seem to recall that The Grateful Dead also used to actively encourage audience recordings. I guess whatever he does there'll be a hardcore of fans who will buy all his releases and fund his no doubt very nice lifestyle . . . . which is also an argument for not bothering with this sort of thing in the first place. Perhaps the ultimate musical indulgence would be a superstar muso claiming their music is so precious that it will never be recorded and will only be played live in secret one-to-one sessions for individuals who can pay a hundred grand or so for a private performance and the rest of the great unwashed are not worthy.

10 Things That Need To Change To Save Independent Venues

Alternatively, it could be argued that you only need to 'put on a show' if your music is not enough alone to entertain the audience. Look, there are no rules. We do what we do and some will like it and some won't. No big deal either way. I think M-Bass-M makes a lot of good points. In the 'good old days' music was a fairly rare commodity and live bands were the only way to get to hear it. Since then, every technological advance has been another step towards music being ubiquitous and, pretty much, free. Heck, these days people can walk around with more music in their pocket than they could reasonably listen to in their entire lives! Against this sort of background is it any wonder that it's such a difficult way to make a decent living? Might as well 'go amateur', pick and choose your gigs and just play for the love of it. But the genie is out of the bottle and no amount of whinging and whining is going to get him back in there. -
It's a short sighted business plan doomed from the start.
Perhaps. So why does it seem to still be so prevalent? -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25927363 So what do we think is more important about music - the money or the art? Does a multi-millionaire musician suing fans do more harm than good?
I don't play for free. Never have. Never will. I'm there to provide entertainment to the people the venue brings in. I don't bring an audience from "out of town". My aim is to make the people who frequent the venue happy. We are not a bunch of hobbyists, and it's a long time since I had mates who thought it was cool to hang out with a mate in a band. I play between 120 and 150 gigs a year between Bristol and Margate and Glasgow and Brighton. Let's be realistic, how is a Surrey band going to bring many people to that spread of gigs on a weekly basis? I turn up at a gig 2 or 3 times a year and expect the promoter and the other bands to have done a good enough job in between so that the venue has a core audience. We actively promote ourselves and the name on the poster is our guarantee of a good gig. An audience will come out for us but not if they have to put up with crap bands in a crap gig for the 15 weeks between our appearances.
So what are you suggesting, some sort of union closed shop that only allows 'good' bands to play anywhere?
