Just an observation, but I tend to PM any seller rather than posting to the 'for sale' topic. So, unless the topic actually states 'SOLD' in the title or in the last post I probably wouldn't notice and would be wasting the seller's time by enquiring. I don't know how much extra time it would take for the mods (who presumably do the locking) to add 'SOLD' to the topic title and I certainly don't want to generate a lot of extra work for them, but just a thought.
That was my first thought, but I definitely had to press hard to engage each stud, especially after I had pinched them up tighter. I even resoldered the wires onto the connector part, but nothing changed until I actually tried a different battery.
Fair enough. What's that Sherlock Holmes saying? When you've eliminated everything else then what remains must be the actual reason, no matter how improbable it may seem! Many years (*cough* decades *cough*) ago I had to fault-find an V24 serial connection (look it up kids ) between two computers and it took me ages because nothing I tried made any sense. Long story short, it turned out that two of the wires in the multi-way cable actually swapped colours within the overall cable sheath!
We use a set list and 99% of the time we stick to it. Usually the set list is designed for the gig, so can vary. All the big touring bands plan the set. That's how you put on a professional show. What we play is designed to flow through the set from start to finish. A set isn't a collections of numbers it's a "whole" thing so, unless you're very good at making it up on the spur of the moment, should be planned. Discussing the numbers on stage is very amateurish, arguing is even worse, and makes the band look bad. Why would you want to do that?
Absolutely! We also always use a set list specifically designed for the gig in question and that's what we'll rehearse before the gig to see how it works. We also choose the songs to explicitly minimise the changeovers before each song so that we can play right through without any gaps if necessary. As the OP acknowledges, a pause between songs can really kill things. Sounds like the OP is seriously letting themselves down for the daftest of reasons. Of course, we spoil all our thought, preparation and showmanship by actually playing, but that's another topic.
It never occurs to me what others may think.
That's the spirit! Quote of the topic for me.
When most young people set with serious ambitions t to play music what they ultimately aspire to is to be in band with a recording contract that makes albums and does international tours. I know I certainly did. That is the usual benchmark.
Seems like a reasonable definition. On that basis I wonder how many BC members are 'commercially successful'? Not me, that's for sure, though I've never aspired to such a thing and music has only ever been an amateur pursuit for me.

How odd. I've never come across that sort of thing before, but I guess that it's possible because a battery is just a collection of individual cells connected in series. I wonder if the actual intermittent connection was something to do with the internal wiring to the two connectors on the top of the battery or the connections between individual cells? I'd have taken the thing apart to try to find out! Another thought is that perhaps the negative connector (not the 'stud' like one) on the battery had been deformed? It's possible (though pretty unlikely) for the 'petals' on that connector to be opened out a bit so that the mating 'stud' doesn't make a physically tight contact and in an extreme case it's possible for the stud to just lie inside the 'petals' and not make any contact. A quick squeeze with a pair of pliers would fix such a problem.

Ahem, he actually asked "is this still a mismatch or is it workable?" Clearly it is a mismatch and as such one of the cabs could be damaged by high volumes. The rig is only 'workable' providing the volume is kept within the limits of the smaller cab, which will have to be determined by guesswork and assumptions, as you've already pointed out.
-
Are such things really 'crises' though, or just a reflection of people in middle age having got themselves together? Maybe the kids have left home, mortgage paid off, bit more spare cash, bit more spare time, so they spend a bit more time doing stuff they've always been interested in whether it be Harley's, playing in a band, scuba diving, track days, whatever. It's playtime and it's important. Nobody on their deathbed says they wished they'd spent more time in the office!
-
Depends on the definition of 'mismatched'. When both cabs are connected to the amp it will capable of outputting 900W at full volume. Because each cab has the same impedance that power will be split evenly between them, so 450W to each cab. the 600W cab will obviously be able to cope but the 300W cab may not. In that sense, I'd say it was fair to say it's a mismatched rig. I entirely agree that in practice the amp will probably not be run at full volume so it won't actually matter, but that's a different issue.
. . . . but if anyone thinks that they are going to become commercially successful playing original material over the age of forty if they not already a musician with an established career then they are kidding themselves.
What does the panel think that "commercially successful" actually means? There must be thousands of musicians who manage to earn a living from playing in bands but my feeling is that 'commercially successful' would be a step beyond that, though I'm not sure what exactly it would be.
Are there really people likely to buy such a collection for such a price?
Hard to believe isn't it? Words fail me.
-
It's a good point, though I can see it would be tricky to actually implement. I've often wondered why people advertise their stuff for sale and state 'collection only' without giving any clues about where they are. Even stating a county would be helpful. I've bought stuff via BC that I probably didn't really need (ha! - who hasn't!) simply because it was local to me. Without a location in the advert I wouldn't have bothered asking to find out where the seller was.
Happy New Year you depressing bastard.
At least Meddle took his misery seriously and sat through the entire programme paying close attention so as to be able to construct such a fine rant. Most people encountering such a dismal programme would have changed channels, but not Meddle. Now that's dedication!
Yeah, but then I would lose that analogue sound and my nuances
There would probably be no analogue 'nuances' at the end of 40km of cable. -
I would be very surprised if mains voltage was the problem in the above example, and if it was then its and example of poor design. A '230v' device operating at ’240v' is only 4.3% above nominal voltage in the first place, which is less than half the +/- 10% tolerance of the mains voltage itself, so the '230v' device should be designed to work with any voltage from 207v to 253v. The worst case scenario would be if the '240v' supply was actually +10% or 264v, which would be 11v above the maximum '230v' tolerance, or again 4.3%. I would be very surprised if a fuse would blow so quickly under such conditions as a standard fuse typically requires 2x its rated current to blow within 1 second. Designing a piece of mains powered consumer equipment to such small tolerances is not what I would consider very good practice. It would be very interesting to know what the actual cause of failure was in this example.

Where did you get that exchange rate though? Basic FX rates are a bit like bank of England base rates - you try getting a mortgage at base rate! Might be more realistic to use a 'tourist rate' for FX calculations.
I'm surprised that anyone is surprised when older singers struggle vocally. We get get the same comments regarding Paul McCartney. Yet, we're not surprised when an athlete starts to slow down when they reach their 30s. The sad fact is, the voice is controlled by muscles and as with any muscles, they deteriorate with age.
Fair point. Davies' recent albums have shown he's lost none of his songwriting ability so it must be frustrating when artists who also rely to a large extent on their distinctive voices start to lose that aspect of their talent.

Happy new year to you all, Whats your plan for 2014 ?
flyfisher replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
BC is great but it's also a black hole into which my time gets sucked, never to return. So 2014 will be the year of the great dial-back. And some singing lessons, gawd help us.
Fair point about the time thing, though that's not necessarily such a bad thing during the cold miserable dark days of winter, when a PC beside a roaring wood burner can be a welcome distraction. But I also expect to be dialling back my time online as the days become longer and I can spend more time outside on the many renovation projects on my todo list. Music-wise, I'll be helping a friend record his second CD of comedy ukelele/banjo songs as well as plodding along with the two bands I'm with (if we can find a new drummer for one of them). I won't be inflicting my singing on the world - that would be too cruel. -
Gig in the Rock band and develop the Funk band. When it's ready it can take over.
That would be my inclination. Definitely go for what you really want, but keep a safety net and don't burn any bridges.
A lot of the singing was off last night, wonder if they had monitor issues.
I only caught Ray Davies and thought his voice was very poor. He was definitely struggling with some of the higher notes. I'd like to think it was monitor issues but I'm wondering if age is catching up with him. Shame to see a legend in decline.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I shall do a bit of YouTube research before buying a couple of albums.
My thread is about asking if other players have had this experience. Have you had s similar gig with such an egotistical musician?
Fortunately not. Not being that great, we're careful to rehearse each gig and agree the playlist. We then stick to it (which is probably the most professional thing about us ). On the other hand, I've never played with a keyboard player, so perhaps I have that 'pleasure' to come?
-
Well, there are plenty of class D converts out there that believe in them. I agree with your point about a basic 'old school' amp with an unregulated power supply. However, there is a middle way and even amps with a big transformer and different taps for different mains voltages can have a regulated power supply for the audio amp stages. Voltage regulators have been around for ages and even before then (which I can remember!) it was possible to design regulated power supplied with discrete components, so I'd suggest that amps with unregulated PSUs are really just poor or cheap designs - the exception rather than the rule, as it were.
-
With only 6 people in the audience I think I'd have walked off the stage and left Mr keys to 'his' gig.
