1.
For me, memorable means once you hear the bass-line, you know the song. Eton Rifles, Billie Jean, Peaches, Another One Bites The Dust are great examples of this.
Agreed. It's like the bass line becomes the 'ear worm' rather than the melody.
2.
Lovely, isn't it? And I manage similar consumption from an E320 CDI. As soon ss I read this, I thought, "I could have written that!"
Me too. E220 CDi here. 40-45mpg without trying, have had 50+ on occasions, and the 2.2 can still mix it at 100mph+ on the autobahns. As mentioned, the load space is huge!
3. There you go . . . . . it's good to talk. Hope it goes well!
4. In the 1960s: In the early 1970s: In the late 1970s: Which was great because it had 'sound-on-sound' for bouncing tracks, though it quickly got noisy. Then a long gap until about 2010 and a big jump forward to a 16-channel DAW set up. All fun to play with though somewhat depressing to realise that, even after all those years, my talent still remains way behind the capabilities of the technology.
5. What about a Hohner violin bass? I've read that Macca only paid £30 for his one but it must be worth well over £100k by now. Er, hang on . . . .
6. Whatever they say, no one really knows. Same as any prediction. There are loads of people who have successfully predicted good investments, but they are vastly outnumbered by all the people who have failed but who never carp on about it. It's just a bet and the golden rule of betting is to never bet more than you can afford to lose.
7. I really liked that. Brilliant! Not enough footage of the bassist - but there rarely is.
8. Yep, that would be a good start, though for the very short distance between the socket and speaker it's probably not too critical and 13A mains cable would probably be fine as a lower limit (assuming we're not talking multi-kW cabs!) Since the OP mentioned re-wiring a cab, the existing wiring would be a good guide. Bigger is OK, smaller is not. Also, don't use solid cable. The constant vibration could cause 'work-hardening' of the copper, leading to breakage of the cable.
9.
he was laid back, he did what he wanted and he wasn't interested in fame. What a great guy.
Yep. In my wildest dreams of musical fame and fortune, JJ Cale would be what I'd wish for - a lifetime of playing music just how I wanted, the respect of my peers and none of that celebrity nonsense.
10. I thought we liked something a bit different instead of same old same old . . . .
11. Agree about the Naturally album, a favourite along with Shades, off which I used to spend house practicing walking bass to 'Pack My Jack'. One of the bands I'm in play 'Call Me The Breeze' in a sort of JJ Cale style, and it's amazing how many people only know the rockier Lynyrd Skynrd version.
12.
Some people are born singers, some achieve singing and others have singing thrust upon them. Couldn't carry a tune in a bucket!
Well yes, but a lot of punk bands were not exactly blessed with even half-decent singers either.
13. . . . and now the full story : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23478101
14. I'd love it to be a hoax, but if it's a hack then they're hacking a lot of sites, including the "Where's Eric" website I linked to above. CNN are reporting it now: http://edition.cnn.c...obit/?hpt=hp_t3 Edit: and now the Daily Mirror: http://www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/going-out/music/j-j-cale-dead-74-2095658 Plus, it reportedly happened yesterday, so plenty of time for someone to have officially confimed the hoax by now - JJ's people themselves perhaps?
15. I like my BH250. I gigged it outdoors at a small wedding last week with just a single 210 and a vocal-only PA and it was fine. Amp was on about 75% volume and my active j was on about 75% as well. If I'd added my 212 I would have had to turn down. Not too fussed about the toneprint thing though. It's fun to play with but I wouldn't miss it. Seems to me the heavyweight stuff is for bands with roadies. For £235 brand new it seems like a bargain to me.

17. Nice bit at 4:54 . . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5WUeOEkl270
18. Nothing on the BBC yet but www.jjcale.com has posted the following notice. JJ Cale Has Passed Away JJ Cale passed away at 8:00 pm on Friday July 26 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, CA. The legendary singer / songwriter had suffered a heart attack. There are no immediate plans for services. His history is well documented at JJCale.com, rosebudus.com/cale, and in the documentary, To Tulsa And Back.
19. Yep, that's my take on it. isn't that what 'precision bass' was all about?
20. Ah, that's a bit more tricky then. Here's a relevant discussion: http://www.audiokarm...ad.php?t=445723 And another, which suggests a £30 unit from fiio or behringer (post #8) http://www.whathifi....i-fi/apple-tv-1 Something like this I think: http://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-192KHz-Digital-Analog-Converter/dp/B005PWPUW6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374769138&sr=8-1&keywords=fiio+dac I've not checked the spec to see if it's totally suitable, just a suggestion to point you - hopefully - in a useful direction.
21. Are you sure it's not worth starting off with a £10 phono lead to connect the audio into you amp? After all, it would give you a shorter audio path with less signal processing. Edit: My mistake, I assumed the Apple TV had a wired audio output like the Airport devices. Still, you're going to be dependent on the quality of the Apple TV audio processing so I'd still resist spending loads on an outboard DAC. If you want to get at the audio from a video stream, can you not do that via the TV itself? Connect the Apple TV via HDMI and then take an analogue audio feed from the screen to your amp. Also, are you trying to get at the full 5.1 audio?
22. Quite a tale of potential disaster, so good on you for pulling out all the stops to recover the situation. At least the sons seemed to have appreciated all your efforts, so good on them as well - without them it sounds like it would have all turned nasty.
23.
Buy well, buy once.
Indeed - the old John Ruskin principle: “There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”
