RAF base gig and being told what to wear
flyfisher replied to markbunney's topic in General Discussion
We accepted the gig a while back, but have only just been informed of these conditions
Any change of conditions gives you the right to withdraw from the gig - just like any contract really. But . . .
....on a serious note have you asked them if they realise they have booked a hard rock band and that traditionally these people don't even own that kind of clobber let alone wear it out in public!
. . . that's the best suggestion yet. Talking is generally good. Everything is negotiable. -

If you don't like their terms, don't accept the gig. -
Electric shocks when using my Harley Benton Amp...
flyfisher replied to ben604's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ben, run your amp only with an RCD protector from now on mate. A big belt of electricity might not be far away. Seriously.
RCDs are certainly good things but don't rely on them because they can only detect current leakage in the mains side of the amp circuits. If there are high voltages on the secondary side of the mains transformer (as there can be with valve amps) then any leakage current from these voltage supplies (i.e. through you to ground!) will not be detected by the RCD and it won't trip. It sounds like the amp needs to be professionally checked. -
Pah - birthdays! Much better to have 'un-birthdays', then you could play the thing right now.
Nope. Bluearan do various top hats and adaptors, in different lengths & diameters.
Thanks for that, but I've just checked sizes and the stands I tried to use seem to be 40mm instead of the 'standard' 35mm for PA speaker top hats. The stands in question are usually used with a lighting bar for some LED parcans, so perhaps lighting gear uses 40mm as a standard? Hmm. I don't have my usual speaker stands to hand, but I'm now thinking they'll probably fit the Wharfdales as well as the Mackies.

Good thinking about replacing the tophats in the cabs - should've thought of that myself instead of focusing on the stands!
i do pa hire and i use the the evp 15 400w powered monitors and they sound great i dont get any feed back from them, i have 5 of them 2 12" 300w powered ones. im very happy with them and so are the people who use them. and cheap enough to replace if needed quick.
I recently bought a pair of these. I'm very pleased with them but the speaker stands that I use for my Mackie SRM450s don't fit them - the poles are too large in diameter. I thought the 'top hat' sockets on PA speakers were all the same size, but obviously not. The Wharfdale ones also seem to he hexagonal. Do I need a special sized speaker pole for these or are there adapters available?
Also need to budget for the necessary mics, cables and stands etc, which adds up really quickly and will cost more than you're expecting!
Ain't that the truth! Once you 'take on' the PA you seem to become the go-to guy for anything the band needs - spare cables, batteries, gaffer tape, anything and everything. I sometimes think I should keep a pack of nappies handy.
I'm a Bass player, why I got lumbared with this i'll never know.
I know the feeling. Why is it that singers seem to think they just need to turn up with a mic and plug it into a PA provided and set-up by someone else? I've got a whole bunch of PA gear including a 16ch desk, snake, monitors, sub, etc but I probably only use it all once or twice a year because of all the time and effort to lug it around and set it all up. Plus, it's really only practical if there's a sound guy to work it all while the band plays. For most gigs we just use a vocal-only PA based on a small Yamaha EMX212s powered mixer. If we need a bit more oomph we add a couple of Mackie SRM450s for the PA speakers and use the Yamaha speakers as monitors. But, really, the PA should be the responsibility of the singers!

Why does it matter that they complain because they can't hear their tv? Surely it's the fact that they can hear you practice at all that's the crux of the matter? Would you be less upset if they complained because you were disturbing their reading of war and peace? Or if they were trying to write an opera? Or a PhD thesis? I don't see that their lifestyle has any particular relevance to the disturbance you're obviously causing them. They're not disturbing you are they? (well, apart from their complaints about your noise of course).

Presumably such equipment has manufacturer-recommended operating and storage temp & humidity ranges? Also, don't forget that the colder the air, the less moisture it can carry, so a cold garage can actually be quite a dry environment - assuming the roof doesn't leak.

OK, so it's just me disagreeing with you then. Fair enough. -
Your post reads "certainly offensive to accuse people of having 'dire' taste in music" which is your interpretation rather than "it's likely interpretation" and completely inaccurate.
Well we'll just have to agree to disagree then - if that's not too offensive a suggestion. -
Skank's eloquence is indeed noted, as is your acknowledgement that such eloquence is beyond your capacity, which was adequately displayed by your 'point' (which i did not miss) that my post was intended to be offensive. However eloquence is something well worth striving for so don't give up yet
It seems that you did, because I said nothing the intention behind your post, only it's likely interprepation. If you brand a piece of music as 'dire' then you're implying that anyone who happens to like and enjoy that music has dire taste in music, which if not offensive is certainly a tad on the rude side. -
Its only rock n roll, rather than matter of life and death. People have opinions on music, should be allowed to articulate them as they wish and so be it rather than be straight jacketed by a narrow criteria of expression. Your insistence that I am out to offend anybody is wide of the mark, OTT and might be viewed as a personal attack on my character, but rest easy as I am not offended by your inaccuracy in this regard. Now time for a beer and a listen to the 'sublime' Led Zep 2. Highly recomended.
You've completely missed my point. I would explain but Skank's post has already done it far more eloquently that I could. -
I don't really understand the problem. It just sounds like you don't play the sort of gigs that require all that potential.

Can a song really be so dire if it can emotionally connect to so many people? Dislike a song, by all means, but it's surely pointless to profess a song to be 'good', 'bad', 'dire', 'sublime' or any other description. Or, if not pointless, then certainly offensive to accuse people of having 'dire' taste in music. -
To me, 'cool' implies something laid back and not sensation-seeking or wildly popular. I'd probably choose something by JJ Cale.
...although I don't know what 'proof' we have that they (the dinosaurs...) were, indeed, 'top dog'..? Maybe they would run a mile at the merest whisper of a gad-fly, or lie down and give up when encountering a shrew..? We have their fossils remains, and can speculate with our present-day intellect as to conditions 'back then', but are we sure..? They maybe survived for so many aeons precisely because they were afraid of their own shadow..!
Fair point. I know plenty of people who run around screaming at the merest hint of a wasp. -

I'm always amused when dinosaurs are used in a disparaging manner. Remind me how long they were the dominant species on this planet compared with our own blink of an eye? Or perhaps I'm mistaken and you really meant that such classic rock will rule the roost for millions of years? -
Sometimes liking a particular bit of music just doesn't matter. This video is worth watching just to see the connection that music can make between people.
I know xilddx has already endorsed this but I think it's worth repeating. This, surely, is what music at its best is all about. -
Tuner Output - really, really stupid question to ask......
flyfisher replied to Jonesy64's topic in Amps and Cabs
Agreed. I don't use pedals and just have a handheld tuner so it's very handy to plug it into the tuner socket on my Ashdown Mag300 amp. My Ampeg SVT-70T combo doesn't have a tuner output so I just plug it into the 'Line Out' socket and it works just as well.
