3 senior gents, moved to tears by their own song
flyfisher replied to John Cellario's topic in General Discussion
Classic rock indeed and very moving watching their reactions. In fact, I think I've got something in my eye after watching that. Thanks for posting! -
I wonder how things would have turned out if they'd stuck to their original psychedelic hippy sound? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3D4YYI8G5EM
I saw them yonks ago and I've always been a prog fan and I totally loved it.
Me too! If anyone wants to see a band at the very top of their game then a Quo gig is well worth it.
It's not the noise from both, rather the assumption that the music has to stop because the all important tele may be disturbed. The tele, now indirectly disturbing the music.
It's not really about the tele though is it? The point, surely, is that your neighbours should have the right not to have to hear anything that you get up to if they don't want to. You're forcing them to hear stuff that they would rather not hear and therefore disturbing their peace. Not really fair is it?

Phone keyboards are cr@p because of their size - mind you, kids seems to be able to type very fast on them. Generational thing perhaps? I guess configurable 'control surface' hardware add-ons will be available untili the old school have all retired.
-
Cool and definitely the way of the future, I reckon, for all sorts of things. A physical control interface is expensive to manufacture whereas a software controlled one costs almost nothing to mass-produce, is more flexible and very easily upgraded. And now that touch screens are fast becoming ubiquitous we're bound to see a lot more of this sort of thing - and not just in the music world.
Dilemma..? Can't see it. Inform them, and see what they say. At worst, they'll ask you to send one back (at their expense...); this seems unlikely, but depends partly on the value of the item to them. It will, in any case, allow them to correct procedures to prevent further mistakes, and you'll get that warm, fuzzy feeling of having done things as one should. No dilemma there, it seems.
This . . . .
Make sure you haven't actually paid for both first. I bet they wouldn't tell you if you had...
. . . and that.
A tad harsh, Nigel, imo... '...It's really important...' Really important to whom..? To the player..? Why not. To his/her band mates..? Often; not always. To the audience..? Maybe, to some; certainly far from the majority, methinks. This is not a slur on them, or anyone, merely my personal opinion and experience. Some folks care about wholemeal bread, others just eat sarnies and know not what they're eating. To each his own..? '...unless you don't care if you sound like...' Surely this is not the only alternative..? Too binary for me, I'm afraid. Not being a tone geek, to me, does not automatically make all sounds emitted bad (or worse...). You plug in, turn on and play and 'Lo..!' the sound is good..! Out of the box..! Miracle..! If one is not interested in spending any more time than that on the subject, and the result is amply adequate for the occasion, I wouldn't call that a bad result. As for it being the 'local': it could well be adequate for the Royal Albert Hall, too. I'm not suggesting that one should not try to improve any or all aspects of one's playing, but to denigrate in the manner posted seems, to me, to be somewhat exaggerated. No malice intended; respect.
Good points. We play in bands don't we and people come to hear a band don't they? Who goes to a band to listen to the tone of the bassplayer - apart from other bassplayers perhaps! I've seen bands (without a desk) set themselves up by each spending ages fiddling with their amp and pedal settings until they are all individually happy and then start playing without any reference to the overall mix for the audience. I guess they sound good to themselves on stage but the results can be crap for the audience.

No alcohol during Cruise Ship work at all? Is this the norm?
flyfisher replied to coffee_king's topic in General Discussion
Can't say I'm too surprised by this policy. I had a whole-day meeting with a colleague from another local authority, and suggested we nip over to the pub for a sandwich at lunchtime. I might as well have announced my intention to take a dump on the carpet - they have a strict zero tolerance policy on alcohol during working hours, and that's just an office block,
Blimey - times change! I can't remember how many Friday afternoons I've lost in City wine bars while entertaining customers, then getting an early train home, falling asleep and ending up in Cambridge or Peterborough. -
Nile Rodgers at Hyde Park - embarrassing
flyfisher replied to Jah Wibble's topic in General Discussion
Nile's mic started working again and the cowardly organisers left it up to him announce that the amps had over heated - not the stage amps.....the bloody P.A. Amps??!!? I know it was a hot day, but they had known it was going to be for ages (at least a week) and there really is no exuse what so ever. I don't care what your experience is on gig of that magnitude, that shouldv'e NEVER have happened. I was just left embaressed wondering what the f***k he must be thinking.
The overheating thing doesn't add up to me. Sure, it was a hot day . . . . for the UK, but gigs like this are put on in hotter places aren't they? Just another reason I'm happy not to go to these 'festivals' any more. -
Don't play anywhere near as much guitar or bass in the flat these days as I did, say, five, years back. I had a habit of really letting rip with the guitar and often just played through the 'bang-bang-bang' on the front door. Once, a neighbour came to the door, complaining that he couldn't hear his telly (!!) cos of the volume. I just swicthed off the amp but, f*** it, I thought, here is a neighbour who never takes his share of cleaning the stair or front steps yet here he is at my door! Went down to his and told him of his shortcomings and to never darken my door again over my playing! Another one came to my door a few months ago during the day when I was (again) on guitar. He said his boss - on the other end of the phone - couldn't hold a discussion cos of the noise. Bascially, I flipped. Can't win with these folk (most of the time they are ok) so I gave up using the guitar amp and just play bass now and again. Sure it'll all kick off again one day.
Sorry, but that's a pretty poor and very selfish attitude IMO.
As soon as I moved into my flat, I spoke to all my neighbours, told them I was a musician and practiced at home, and that if it ever got too loud, just knock on the door and tell me as it wouldn`t offend me, but I didn`t want to be a disturbance to them. 9 years on, no knocks on the door. I don`t practice that loud anyway, not even above regular tv volume. It`s all about courtesy and consideration in my view.
Spot on!
play an electric into a mixer + headphones
The solution!

Thinking about it, how much would it cost to send through the post?

Ridiculous that no one wants to adopt this. Connect it to a pair of old but decent speakers and it will provide a far better sound than most PC speakers. Use it with something like an Apple Airport Express and you have a cheap but good audio streaming solution for all your digital music. If I was near Leeds I'd have been knocking on Fumps' door by now . . . .

If you mean a simple splitter cable then I'd be wary of that arrangement. Probably not a good idea to have both basses connected in parallel to the amp input. Worth a try, perhaps, if you happen to have a suitable cable, but I'd prefer a switching arrangement that only connected one bass at a time to the amp input.

Have you tried not wearing tight leather jumpsuits?

Amps with built in tuners were called 'receivers' and kenwood had a pretty decent reputation. Does it look like this? http://gallery.audioreview.com/showphoto.php?photo=9582 Definitely don't bin it!

If the device is a simple, passive switch box then it would be able to do what you describe. If you're handy with a soldering iron, it would be a simple task to make one yourself with a few bits from somewhere like Maplins. Even using good quality connectors should leave you plenty of change out of £20.

The future of Music.. does it really matter??
flyfisher replied to SimonEdward's topic in General Discussion
The future of music will sort itself out and predictions about it don't matter a jot except to pass the time of day. -
you cant beat fender, They got it right.....
flyfisher replied to greyparrot's topic in Bass Guitars
By debating all the good/bad points of fenders compared to other brands, this topic seems to missing the most important factor of all - iconic status. THAT is surely the reason that fenders are so popular? There are all sorts of iconic products - want a luxury motor car, then get a Rolls Royce. Want a good MP3 player, then get an iPod. Want a good watch, get a Rolex. Etc, etc. All iconic products have their good points and bad points and all have their competitors, many of which will be better in some respects than the icon in question. But none of them are the iconic products they aim to compete with. Yes, a Lexus is a fine motor car, but it's not a Rolls Royce. I'm sure Sony make some good MP3 players, but they are nowhere near as cool as an iPod. Omega make perfectly good watches, but they're not in the same league as an iconic Rolex. So If you want a bass then you can be sure that a Fender will not only do the job demanded of it - as proved by countless musicians over decades of live and recorded music - but you can also be confident that it will be widely accepted as the 'right' choice and will never be asked "what's that then?" when you open the case. Of course there will always be people who choose to avoid iconic products (and iconic music come to that) for all sorts of valid reasons, but they will never detract from Fender's iconic status. Indeed, they may help to enhance it. -
Are we talking RMS watts or peak watts or valve watts or different manufacturer's watts or . . . . (continued forever)?
