Well, whatever the circumstances, you can't do anything about it so just forget it and move on. Life's too short to get mad about such things.
Make it a mission to get in a band that posts a gig before them...
Yep.

I can't really add much to Dave's already excellent feedback but, for the record, I've just bought an ethernet switch from him and it arrived very quickly, superbly packed and exactly as described. Perfect transaction really - thanks Dave!
Of course, I am totally wrong and you are right as always. Thank you for knowing my own mind better than I do & pointing out the error of my ways.
You're welcome.
You speak for yourself. I've got a unbelievably sh*t badly paid menial job but I'd genuinely rather do that than play music I absolutely detest.
That sounds plain daft to me. if you're prepared to spend your working life doing an unbelievably sh*t menial job with bad pay, surely it would be better to do a highly paid job playing unbelievably sh*t music? After all, you could still play the music you DO like during your spare time - of which you'd probably have a lot more if you were in M&S.
I don't feel any jealousy at the Mumfords, just mild irritation that because they're successful exposure to their crap is harder to avoid. I think they're popular because they write very simple songs based around the same repetitive ideas, so people who aren't really into music at all don't have to deal with any kind of learning curve or emotional intensity, and if they like one song it's a fairly safe bet the others won't offer any unwanted challenges.
Ah, we have a music snob amongst us, who believes that simple songs are not worthy and that people who don't understand musical complexity have no opinions worth listening to. Well, it's a point of view I suppose.

Blimey! A Benny Hill sketch with no busty bikinied women. Who'd have thought it?

Not particularly. I generally prefer instrumental music. If words were that important to me I'd probably read more poerty.
Whenever I think I hear them,...it could be anybody as far as I know ..I can't stay interested enough to give them a proper go.. I think it is them as I expect to hear their hit...but I may be wrong as they all seem to sound the same.
That's fair opinion. Thing is, it could be applied to almost any sort of music and certainly (in my opinion) anything rap, metal, thrash, punk etc.
"Let he who has been in a successful rock band since 1963, helped write the rule book and many catchy hit records and is till doing it in 2013 cast the first stone" (no pun intended)
Exactly. it's the fate of any new, edgy, bad boy, anarchic band (as the Stones once were) that becomes wildly popular, grows up to become rich and famous and becomes the establishment yardstick that a new generation of young wannabe edgy, bad boy, anarchic bands aims to kick down while chasing their own dreams and ambitions. And so it goes . . . .
So could someone please enlighten me as to what it is that so many find commendable, memorable, edifying or uplifting about them. I must admit I'm veering towards agreeing with Charlie Brooker's somewhat uncharitable but perhaps not completely inaccurate appraisal of them, quoted elsewhere on here, as "Trust Fund Wurzels". They are posh boys from Wimbledon, I suppose.
Seems a bit strange, if not downright prejudiced, to like or dislike music on the basis of who happens to be playing it. I can understand people not liking the musical output of a particular band but I can't understand the apparent need to then deny the clear evidence that lots of other people clearly do or question their sanity for doing so. I don't particularly like them either - but so what?
So true. A lot of music has the very soul wrenched from it in the name of 'perfection'. I'd rather hear something a little less perfect technically but which retains at least some connection on an emotional level. I've spent a few years composing in front of a computer screen myself, but would much rather play in a band of humans, with all their faults... in fact, because of their faults.
Yep - take the emotion out of music and you're left with something suitable for a hotel lobby or shopping mall.
I don't want to paint an entirely negative picture but it appears to be really tough unless you're happy to live on peanuts and dreams
Don't all true artists suffer for their art and be unappreciated in their own lifetime?
We cant pick and choose to not play in shitholes because there aint that many places left up here that do live music. We used to play in a place that had a fight every night, luckily we were behind a little barrier type stage , so could look on bemused.
That's very sad but I have to say that I'd just give up gigging if those were the only venues available. Personal choice of course.
When I'm looking to buy a bass, . . . . .. Is it me
Yes, of course it's you - but when it comes to spending your own hard earned folding stuff then you're the only person who really matters and you can decide whatever you like and dislike. Your money, your choice. I wouldn't worry about it - though don't discount the possibility that a bass photographed for sale on a bed of satin sheets and perfumed rose petals has not previously been used to dig over the veg patch when there were no cameras about. -
What is the protocol if some punt(er) damages your gear? Can you ask him for money towards a replacement or do tend to accept that its your equipment and you knew the risks?
Interesting question. I can see no reason why the punter couldn't be sued for the damages caused. Get a few witness statements confirming what happened and sue through the small claims court.

I agree with all the above points about power amps increasingly built into speaker cabs. The other advantage of such things is that all the various PA cables can be standard balanced XLR types, with no need for long runs of high-power speaker cables.
I have a Jap Fender P, and it is very good - but it is the bass I keep purely for playing in shithole venues where it might get nicked. I have zero emotional attachment to it.
The above quote from the "Fender they got it right" topic prompted me to post this question. Similar things have been mentioned in various topics over the years and, apart from wondering why anyone would play a 'shithole venue' in the first place, I wonder how common it is to have instruments or gear stolen or damaged whilst gigging. BC has plenty of gigging bassists, so who has experienced these sorts of problems?
As far as the overwhelming majority of BassChat members are concerned, there is no problem. To be perfectly blunt about it, we are not going to change the way that BassChat works simply to appease a small number of people who seem to think that their minority viewpoint is more valid than that of the majority. The majority of members have approved of the changes, the minority have had their say and now it's time to move on.
Majority of members this, minority of members that - since when did BC become a democracy? I thought it was a dictatorship, thankfully a benevolent one, and quite right too. He who pays the piper calls the tune! Of course, people will have differing opinons about how to run BC and, I'd concede, may even expect to be able to express those opinons (It is a discussion forum after all), but expecting to have any influence over how things are run is a bit unreasonable, isn't it?

I was surprised to hear a report about him on R4 news at 6pm - I wouldn't have thought he had that sort of profile. Perhaps the news editor is a blues fan?

Barry Dallman blog: "... worst exploitation of musicians ..."
flyfisher replied to BassTractor's topic in General Discussion
+1 I couldn't really undestand all the fuss either. Surely such things are only exploitation if the T&Cs are a secret and/or people are somehow forced to pay and play? As it is, someone has tried to organise an event with certain 'rules' and it was for performers to take or leave. Seems like they mostly chose to decline and so the proposed event was cancelled. Such things are a consequence of democratising music. Similar things are happening in the world of photography, film making and even journalism - once the preserve of specialists with expensive facilities but now accessible to almost anyone and very easy to distribute the end results around the world. -
As ever these things are a nonsense.
. . . unless you're in the business of selling copy. Wasn't written by 'Phil Space' was it? -
I think the major difference is that rock music really meant something to people in those days and was truly the voice of a generation , whereas nowadays it's just another branch of showbiz entertainment and consumerism .
Good observation!
