My point was that there's an alternative possibility based on a less altruistic and more commercial motive. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it does introduce another dynamic and, in the absence of any hard evidence, it seems just as likely to me. But only the owners know for sure.

[/quote] I was just offering an alternative speculation to the seemingly prevailing speculation that the owners had been funding the site out of the goodness of their hearts but now need a bit of extra cash to keep things going, hence the introduction of charges for selling stuff. Unless the owners announce their intentions and plans for the site we're all just guessing about such things aren't we? (Though I'm not suggesting they should make any such announcement because as I've already said it's their site and they can do what they like with it.)

Indeed, why is it even relevant? BC is a bit like a shop - the owners fund the costs and invite people to come in and browse. There's no obligation to buy anything - some will and some won't, the decliners probably being in the majority. Fairness doesn't really come into it, or if you think it does then you may also think it would be fair to charge people to enter a shop, even if they don't buy anything, because it's 'unfair' on those who do buy stuff and therefore fund the shop that loads of people merely browse in. In short, the owners can set whatever rules they wish and if the members don't like it then they'll move on.

People are used to the web being free so if a website they've previously used for free starts to charge for something, people will inevitably look around for another website offering the same or a similar service. Of course £20 a year is not a lot, but it's £20 more than you have to pay on some other sites. Whether they are as good or not is a different matter, but people will only find that out by trying them and I'd bet that's what a lot of people are doing. Give it six months or so to gauge the real impact.

I voted "doesn't bother me", but that's probably only because I only seem to buy stuff. I can imagine it could be annoying when trying to sell something, but is it really so hard to just say no to any unwanted offers?

Given all the discussion we have on here about finding that elusive tone (whatever 'that' actually is), I'm rather surprised that 99% of the comments are all about the aesthetics of the thing. Anyone outside the bass fraternity could be forgiven for thinking that all we really care about is what a bass looks like, not what it sounds like. Could it be that GP, as an internationally renowned professional bass player is bucking the basschat trend by being more concerned about tone than looks? Indeed could that be [u]why [/u]he's an internationally renowned professional bass player in the first place?

Play a few gigs in both incarnations and see how they are received and which one you most enjoy. Loads of people play in multiple bands. it may be less common for a single group of musicians to play as multiple bands but why should it matter? As long as each entity promotes itself clearly, who cares?
