Really? I don't see much difference in posting a 'wanted' request for musicans or instruments or equipment.

The 30 Harshest Musician-on-Musician Insults
flyfisher replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
All very bitchy except, perhaps, this one: 7. Elton John on Madonna “Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay £75 to see them should be shot.” OK, it's having a specific dig at Madge, but I agree with the general principle. -
What music did you or your wife walk down the ailse to?
flyfisher replied to FuNkShUi's topic in General Discussion
Can't remember and it's not particularly important to me. Still being in love and married after 30+ years is the important thing. -
I'm sure they daydream of such, but who doesn't?
Well I know someone who actually did it, rather than just daydream, with this website: http://www.pctechguide.com/ You may be interested to read how a 'hobby' project can evolve over the years into a full-fledged business, even though this was not the original intention: http://www.pctechguide.com/pctechguide-site-design-policy/background-to-the-pc-technology-guide-wwwpctechguidecom
I only see alltruism and a great bass/music resource and thats all that matters to me ,
That's fair enough and you might be wholly correct - it's certainly the more appealing supposition. I'm just pointing out that it is supposition and that there are alternative explanations.

Daft question coming...converting combo to bass head??
flyfisher replied to fender73's topic in Amps and Cabs
. . . . Ashdown might even sort you a sleeve.
Alternatively, with a couple of suitable angle-brackets, you might be able to fit the removed amp into a rack case. -
Thing is, the site isn't a shop.
Indeed, but that wasn't really my point . . . which was that all the discussion so far seems to have revolved around the idea that the owners are being altruistic in some way but things have got a bit tight and they can no longer rely on members' goodwill or the depth of their own pockets anymore so they've 'had' to introduce a nominal charge to help cover the costs and because we're all matey bassists we shouldn't begrudge a few quid for helping out fellow bassists to keep good old BC ticking over. My point was that there's an alternative possibility based on a less altruistic and more commercial motive. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but it does introduce another dynamic and, in the absence of any hard evidence, it seems just as likely to me. But only the owners know for sure.
While I can't argue your right to say it , it does come across a bit 'Daily Mail' ish, little churps like this may seem insightful in some ways , but does it really contribute to anything .
I was just offering an alternative speculation to the seemingly prevailing speculation that the owners had been funding the site out of the goodness of their hearts but now need a bit of extra cash to keep things going, hence the introduction of charges for selling stuff. Unless the owners announce their intentions and plans for the site we're all just guessing about such things aren't we? (Though I'm not suggesting they should make any such announcement because as I've already said it's their site and they can do what they like with it.)
Ped and Kiwi know this, so why wouldn't they charge for it if they were trying to make the forum self sufficient?
How do we know they're just trying to make the forum self-sufficient? How do we know they're not working on a business plan to develop a web resource, build its value and then sell it to the highest bidder for millions, splitting the money and retiring? I don't know either way and I don't really care - it's entirely up to them - but I wonder if people would view things differently when asked to help fund a 'community' resource or help fund early retirement for a couple of entrepreneurs?

I thought it was going to be a cock-up with a SCART cable.

flyfisher replied to fender73's topic in Amps and Cabs
Or simply saw off the cab part of the combo leaving the amp already encased. -
My problem is that - reading some of the posts from BC-ers old and new - they still don't seem to get it that: * Ped and Kiwi were supporting the forum out of their own pockets at a personal loss.
While undoubtedly true, with respect, it doesn't place any obligation on members to contribute to the running costs as well. Who knows the owner's motivation? Indeed, why is it even relevant? BC is a bit like a shop - the owners fund the costs and invite people to come in and browse. There's no obligation to buy anything - some will and some won't, the decliners probably being in the majority. Fairness doesn't really come into it, or if you think it does then you may also think it would be fair to charge people to enter a shop, even if they don't buy anything, because it's 'unfair' on those who do buy stuff and therefore fund the shop that loads of people merely browse in. In short, the owners can set whatever rules they wish and if the members don't like it then they'll move on.
To be honest I think if I downloaded the NASA space walk risk assessment and sent it to the agent it would just be filed and not read.
Quite possibly.
If the sh*t hits the fan, you can bet lots of very important people will read it.
Quite definitely.
I think it is inevitable that, when a totally free resource becomes one that you have to pay for, then a decline will occur. I too think it is a reasonable fee, but still, the move from free to not free, is bound to have an impact.
I reckon a lot of websites are finding this. People are used to the web being free so if a website they've previously used for free starts to charge for something, people will inevitably look around for another website offering the same or a similar service. Of course £20 a year is not a lot, but it's £20 more than you have to pay on some other sites. Whether they are as good or not is a different matter, but people will only find that out by trying them and I'd bet that's what a lot of people are doing. Give it six months or so to gauge the real impact.
I'm sure Guy Pratt being a proper working bassist has a bass of every kind for every occasion in collection. So what do you give to the bassist who has everything? Warwick gave him the opportunity to design a bass so he went for it. Who can blame him? It's not like he'll have paid for it. Do I like it? Yes, it's a great idea I reckon. Would I buy one if I could afford it? No, I'd give the money to a decent luthier to build MY signature bass.
That's a very good point. Why would anyone want to pay lots or dosh for someone else's idea of their ideal bass? People who haven't a clue what THEY want perhaps?
The 'Fairtrade' deal with our overseas custom shop ensures high quality at crazy low prices.
I actually think, the "perfect bass" is a marriage of tone and looks. You dont want something that sounds awesome , but looks pants and vice versa
Interesting. Do we really not put awesome sound above looks? Will the music-buying public really care? Will it really matter in a studio? Could be an issue for live shows, I guess, or for people who like basses as wall-hanging ornaments.
Beyond the first month I bet those pups get set and left where they are.
Quite possibly . . . . a bit like all the tone, graphic equaliser and multiple pedal controls on many bass rigs.
-
Trying to remember the pup positions for a particular tone in a gigging situation would be a PITA. There must be a hell of a lot of options there.
It's certainly true that a multi-position pup adds a lot more config options than fixed ones, but I don't see why that would be a particular problem when some players seem to manage perfectly well with multiple tone controls on a bass and multi-band graphic equalisers on an amp.
Are you sure you aren't over generalising just a bit there ff?
Not unless I missed all the posts discussing the sound of the thing amongst all the ones discussing its looks.
-
Given all the discussion we have on here about finding that elusive tone (whatever 'that' actually is), I'm rather surprised that 99% of the comments are all about the aesthetics of the thing. Anyone outside the bass fraternity could be forgiven for thinking that all we really care about is what a bass looks like, not what it sounds like. Could it be that GP, as an internationally renowned professional bass player is bucking the basschat trend by being more concerned about tone than looks? Indeed could that be why he's an internationally renowned professional bass player in the first place?
But because people have told us we have nailed the Feelgood sound, we are wondering if we should become a Dr Feelgood “tribute” band.
Why do you have to 'become' a tribute band? Just call yourselves a different name when playing an all-Feelgood set (Dr Goodfeel?) and your current name when playing your other stuff. Play a few gigs in both incarnations and see how they are received and which one you most enjoy. Loads of people play in multiple bands. it may be less common for a single group of musicians to play as multiple bands but why should it matter? As long as each entity promotes itself clearly, who cares?
