BH250 Toneprints ................... Help??????
flyfisher replied to dodgnofski's topic in Repairs and Technical
Can you hear the 'screeching' noise? (a bit like an old analogue modem). if not, turn your bass volume up (and turn the amp volume down!). -
I'd guess that constant cycling of temperature would be more harmful than constant cold.
-
I guess it depends on how much you need the money, but if I thought the bass was genuinely worth £2k then I'd wait for another offer. Is this a real situation though? Even if you'd accept £1800, that's no reason to take £1000 now and risk the £800 over 3 months. I'd suggest the buyer gets a short term loan for the £800. Unless they were a mate, why would you want the hassle?

Sort of music related legal advice sought.
flyfisher replied to john_the_bass's topic in General Discussion
If you're really considering going legal then you should seek real legal advice rather than some chit-chat on an internet forum. Presumably, you're asking here because you don't want to spend money on a real lawyer? FWIW, you can demand anything you want but the legal strength of such a demand is likely to depend on what, if any, contractual conditions were put in place to cover band-related IPR. If, as I suspect, there are no contractual agreements in place then any legal action will get messy (another word for expensive) because you'll end up relying on opinions. One opinion might be that as you were (presumably) very happy to lend your talents to a band video while you were in the band then it's a bit unreasonable to seek to harm the band now that you're no longer part of it. It's difficult to see how you could be personally harmed by appearing in this promo video (unless your playing was excrutiatingly bad, for example) so your intentions can only be to harm the band you are now no longer a part of. Given that frivolous or vexatious litigation is generally frowned upon by courts, you may find that any legal action fails, with costs awarded against you. There you go. Free legal advice - worth every penny. -
I really don't recall when the distinction became so important or so imbued with 'meaning'. I must have been out of the country at the time.
Good point. It's all about the music isn't it? Is there a distinction about listening to our own music or other people's stuff? Is an 'original' air guitarist somehow different to a 'covers' air guitarist?

Behringer is crap! - is it? do we give labels too much weight?
flyfisher replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
I would have thought it was obvious that the most expensive gear is the best - you only have to ask anyone that spends loads of money on expensive gear and they'll confirm it. -

instrument cables all snarled up, any tips?
flyfisher replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
I've always found that with the twist method it is obvious which way the gentle twist should be. Try in the other direction and you can feel that it is fighting to twist the other way.
Absolutely - which makes it a lot easier in practice that it might look. Everyone should at least give it a try to see how easy it. Plus, it's one of those little life skills that can stand you in good stead for all manner of things. I once took a yachting course and part of it was how to correctly coil and stow lines (tip for land lubbers - yachts don't have ropes ) and was the only one who could do it right first time, much to the awe of the other course participants. -
Whenever I hear something "from Norwich" I'm reminded of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jPOT4mP8c8 Damn, I'm showing my age . . . welcome to Basschat Frankie!
They know much more about this than we do.
So they say. The ancient Greeks could explain how Helios moved the sun across the sky with a chariot. The Romans had a similar, though slightly different explanation. Galileo then shocked everyone by showing that the sun didn't actually go around the Earth in the first place. Today, we think we know it all. But, regardless of all the various ideas and theories throughout the ages, the solar system just carried on doing its stuff. It hasn't changed a jot - it's us that have changed our ideas. So yes, I've no doubt 'expert' luthiers will be able to give us chapter and verse about the merits of their own particular little methods and materials, but the fact remains that there is no single 'best' bass because there are too many variables that we really don't understand. Anyway, I'm just surprised that no one has mentioned the effect of paint colour on tone . . . . .
I gig because I love playing. I won't play for nowt unless there is a good reason
That sounds like a bit of a conflict. I also gig because I love playing . . . . so much so that money doesn't come into it.
-
I won't play just for the hell of it, though.
Nor will I. The moment I don't fancy it, I won't do it. So you won't find me traipsing up and down motorways for a gig because that would spoil my enjoyment. Still, each to their own, horses for courses and all that - it's when people start telling others how they 'should' run a band that irks me.
If you're playing covers you need to be getting paid.
No, you don't need to. I enjoy sailing, but I don't expect my friends to pay me when I take them out for a day. If sailing was an important source of income for me then it might be different, and I'd probably only hire out my boat and not bother sailing at all if I wasn't being paid, but since I do it purely for enjoyment then I'm just happy to be out there with the wind in my hair. Same with music and gigging. Same with loads of other things. I can't really see the problem here, apart from some people telling other people what they should or should not be doing.

instrument cables all snarled up, any tips?
flyfisher replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
I absolutely hate cables. Coil them up neatly and the next week they're in a bigger knot than Knot McKnotley of Nottingham.
Then you're doing something wrong with them. The only knotty cables I have a problem with is when I help one of our guitarists sort out his tangle of cables that he keeps 'neatly' tied up in his carrier bag. I've shown him many times how to coil and store cables but he seems to believe it's normal for gutar leads to fail every couple of months and just buys new ones. -

switching Class D amp to 110v, do I need a new fuse?
flyfisher replied to BassPimp66's topic in Repairs and Technical
Regardless of the operating voltage, the amp will require roughly the same amount of power to operate. Thus, broadly, if the operating voltage is halved, the current will be doubled. If the fuse is rated at 6.3A for 220v then this should be adequate when operating at full volume. If the voltage is change to 110v and the amp is only used at 'moderate' volumes then the 6.3A fuse will likely be fine. But if the amp is used at full whack, a 6.3A fuse may eventually blow and this might happen in the middle of a gig. Ideally, when converting to 110v operation, the fuse should be changed to the rating recommended by the manufacturer. This should be fairly easy to find out, I would expect. It will do not harm to the amp to leave the 6.3A fuse in place, but It does leave the risk of a mid-gig failure. -
Do distance selling regulations apply to used gear?
flyfisher replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
All the above. DSR protects consumers who have not had a chance to fully inspect the goods and to satisfy themselves that they fully meet their requirements, unlike when you can handle and test the goods when buying in a shop. Don't let it drop and don't let them bully you. Write clear letters/emails in a manner that can be used as evidence in court (if it ever comes to that) and keep all copies. If you choose to name and shame, be careful to stick to verifiable facts. -
Perhaps he is perfectly happy with his business as it is? People have different ideas of what constitutes success, some people don't want to own all the money in the world, I can't imagine that he's poor. And perhaps he's just the kind of person that takes offence at people making inferior copies of his special and unique product and isn't the kind of person to just let it go and has enough money to throw at lawyers to make litigation his hobby? Probably because he can't get anyone to play golf with him. Perhaps he's just a bit of a knob, or wasn't breast fed or something? Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps!
Good post. His company, his choice how to run it.
I heard that Eddie Van Halen had copyrighted the 'candy stripe' colour scheme from his original Frankenstrat guitar. People who painted their guitars in tribute had auctions and so on stopped immediately. I think it really alienated some die hard fans....
Well if he can do it, so can I. I'm claiming designtradecopyrightmark on this post and I hereby demand that Basschat removes it immediately or else I'm going to open my cage of rabid lawyers. Er, hang on . . . .

Does anyone want to save some CRT screen from landfill? I have about a dozen assorted screens to give away to good homes (or one big home!). All were fully working when last used and are mostly 17-inch colour VGA types from Dell and IBM. Also a few PAL video monitors and one largish workstation screen (RGB inputs) from a DEC computer. PM with your specific requirements if interested. Free to anyone who can collect from Hertford.
