2.
Gonna go against the flow here. I can't really see what the problem is with Rickenbacker's stance on this. They see instruments such as those in the op's photo as being counterfeit and take the appropriate measures. I'm sure Rickenbacker have, in the past, spent a lot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears designing and manufacturing a quality product. Doesn't seem quite right to me that someone can come along and say, " Ooooh, what a fantastic looking bass, I can make one that looks identical and sell it for a fraction of the price"... As I say, doesn't seem right to me.
I doubt they spent "a lot of time, money, blood, sweat and tears" developing their design. Let's face it, it's a piece of wood cut out in a particular shape. Yes, I know it's THEIR particular shape, and that's fine, but let's not get carried away that it's some sort of breakthrough in the world of musical instruments. If we were all so precious about IP then surely all electric basses should be licenced to Leo Fender? Yet the p-bass is probably the most-copied bass on the planet, but Fender still exists. Anyway, no-one is being fooled by these things and they're not being passed off as the genuine article. People buy cheap copies because they can't afford the genuine article, so even if the Ric police pi$$ away loads of dosh on legal fees, they're unlikely to generate more sales of the original items. As has been pointed out, they can't take on the big boys who are making these things so they're getting spiteful with the little people who buy them. Classic bullying tactics and inevitably unpopular. You have to deal with the world as it is, not the way you'd wish it to be.
 3. My understanding is that copyright/trademark owners are legally obliged to take action to protect their IP otherwise their ownership claim can be weakened. However, I entirely understand the anti 'Ric police' sentiments, so it's a delicate balance for them - damned if they do, damned if they don't. Of course, their legal advisers will no doubt advise they pursue every known infringement because that's the 'legally correct' advice (and it's good work for the lawyers). Whether such action against individual owners is a good thing for the reputation and longevity of the business is another thing altogether.
 4. Of course, if you're selling it for a massive profit then you might have to consider capital gains tax . . . .
 5. I've had an SVT-70T combo for about 25 years (and I bought it secondhand) and it has served me well. I still use it for practice at home but I have also used it for small gigs and sometimes connected to a PA (it has a DI output). I've only ever had one problem when a power resistor came loose (probably through vibration), but that was a very easy fix. Not too bad for something that's probably at least 30 years old. More info in this old marketplace topic (which is nothing to do with me): http://basschat.co.uk/topic/159103-ampeg-svt-70t-combo/
 6.
South Pole in relation to magnetic north or the other one?
You jest, but CRT screens used to be set up to take into account where in the world they were going to be used. I wonder if 'down-under' guitars are available?
 7. I've posted this before but I think it bears repeating here: http://www.maplin.co.uk/mains-socket-tester-9800
 8.
They all are, mate.
True. I should have said this years seems worse than others for some reason.
 9.
The worst thing is that some people don't get how important it is.
I'd say it's a lot more than 'some' people. Wikipedia states that the biggest selling single ever is 'White Christmas" at 50m copies and "Thriller" is the biggest selling album ever at about the same. Those are worldwide sales. Now that's a lot of copies but it represents a pretty tiny proportion of the population. I reckon it would be fairer to say that music is incredibly important to some people but that most people are indifferent to it.
 10. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21700146 This is starting to feel like a bad year for losing musicians.
 11. I saw it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21688814
 12.
Good afternoon, flyfisher (or may I call you 'fly'..?)... You're right it's more likely to be 110 db (at 1 metre; how far from it are you..?). Mine's electric, but is still wearing on the ears (and arms, but I digress...). Here's a little gadget to play with... http://www.caohc.org...tions/meter.php ...with the volume turned down low on the PC. We're slightly off topic, though, I fear...
Fly is fine. Or Mike. I wasn't really being as flippant as my post may have come across. I was just surprised to see a chainsaw as being louder than the 'pain threshold', though I guess that could be a bit subjective. The biggest pain is in the back from all the leaning over! My chainsaw is certainly loud but I don't find it painful, or even uncomfortable really (my arms are of average length, so I'm rarely more than 1m away from it ). Perhaps it's a time thing, because it's rarely running at full revs for more than 20 secs or so before ticking over while changing position etc. OTOH, my ears will ring slightly if I spend any length of time on the lawn mower or my old tractor, so I always wear ear defenders for those.
 13. Is this a good point to bring up Eurovision? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21697205 I've never really understood the point of this contest More specifically, I've never understood why each country doesn't just enter their own recent no.1 chart hit - surely that's a better indication of a songs popularity than all the nationalistic and obviously biased voting nonsense. Still, I never watch it so what do I know?
 14.
As we can see, 110 is around pain threshold, 120 like a chainsaw.
Hmm. I regularly use my chainsaw. It's loud but it's nowhere near painful.
 15. True, but that reality doesn't go down well in today's entitlement culture.
 16. I don't really understand how there can be a 'worst thing' about something that is basically optional. My own 'room 101' would probably involve being locking in a room with rap music blaring out 24/7, but so far I've managed to avoid that situation - unless Old Nick has something up his sleeve for my afterlife.
 17.
I don't understand you guys ripping CD's to mp3 format, when you could be ripping to lossless WAV or FLAC and enjoying it in full quality.
That's a fair point. I started ripping my CDs (and vinyl) just over 10 years ago, when the ipod was first launched and HDD space was more of an issue than it is today. Even so, I used high-bitrate MP3 for maximum device compatibility and couldn't tell the difference between 256kbps and a wav file. I now use the maximum 320kbps, though I can't say I've noticed any quality improvement. I guess
 18. Oh man! 'Love Like A Man' was one of the very first songs I performed (quite badly!) in my first band while at school.
 19.
I get all mine as physical CD's, mostly from Amazon. I have debated buying off google before now but i never have.
Me too. I then rip the CD onto my server PC and play it through various means and also copy it to the family iPods. It's very rare that I ever play a CD more than once - and that's only to rip it.
 20.
No idea about jazz Nige, but Stock , Aitken and Waterman had a factory making hits , was it the quality of the material or the selling of it that really counted ?
And Stax (bloody fat-cat bankers eh?) . . . and motown. Probably some others as well.
 21. Surely the ideal thing for a talented artist to do would be to bang out two or three pop hits, make a load of dosh and then spend it on living a reclusive life while writing artistic masterpieces? Hmm, thought not.
 22.
If i remember correctly, he played a great slap solo wit Eric Clapton live. Saw it on the telly ages ago. Someone may remember the concert.
I saw him play with Clapton many times in the early 90s. I don't recall him being particularly 'slappy', but I've no doubt he could if necessary. Perhaps that's the bassist's definition of a true gentleman - someone who can slap, but doesn't.
 23. I used to regularly work 50-60 hour weeks, and 35-40 hours is the norm, so a full-time musician ought to easily be able to do the same.
 24.
You order from China, you send em the logo and they print whatever you want on the item and on the carton. Of course, I have not checked to see if theyre actually made in China, but you get the point. You might just as well buy the cheapest Chinese ones you can find.
Yep, might just as well. Just like HDMI cables and the like.
