Indeed it was only recently that government was considering increasing motorway limits to 80mph, which suggests that the issue really isn't so black and white. Lot's of arbitrary things are illegal and lots of arbitrary things are decriminalised when it is realised that making them illegal is stupid, immoral, unenforceable. Where you can legally put your penis would be a good example of this and how times, and laws, change over time.

Caravan is my favourite of the Canterbury scene, but sad news all the same. Trouble is, you get to a certain age and the musical heroes of your youth start shuffling off one by one. At least they leave their works behind.

In fact, it's the very reason we use the terms 'downloading' and 'streaming' in the first place. Try arguing with TVL that you don't need a TV licence because you're not watching 'live' television anymore because of the few seconds of delay incurred within the transmission chain (during which data is being stored) because of the 'nature of the technology'. Let us know how you get on.

It may not be to do with who in particular receives the broadcast, but it has quite a lot to do with the number of people in the audience - which is why radio station ratings are so important and why Radio 1 will pay a larger fee than a hospital radio station.

Well yes, but is an 'OK' drummer with a great personality better than a great drummer who is also an @rseole? Depends on the circumstances I guess but most things in life are a compromise.

I don't think it's a question of if you CAN receive LIVE TV broadcasts, it's a case of if you DO then you need a TV licence. It's quite legal to watch recorded programmes via iPlayer without a TV licence but TVL don't like to admit it. The following clearly states: [i]You do not need a television licence to catch-up on television programmes in BBC iPlayer, only when you watch or record at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is being broadcast or otherwise distributed to the public.[/i] http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/playing_tv_progs/tvlicence That is quite clear and unambiguous. But then they try to fudge things by later stating: [i]It is a criminal offence to watch 'live' television without a TV licence or to possess or control a device which you know or reasonably believe will be used to watch 'live' TV without a TV licence.[/i] That is far more dubious, in my view, because I don't see how anyone can prove that you "know or reasonably believe" something. Surely proof of watching live television would be required in any criminal prosecution? Otherwise we'd all be prosecuted for owning vehicles that we "know or believe" will be used to break a speed limit at sometime. It's typical of the scare tactics used by TVL to intimidate law-abiding people who don't happen to have a TV licence.

In one of the bands I play in, the drummer left because he wasn't happy with the stuff we were playing. Fair enough. It was a good thing really because he wasn't interested, would just read the paper between songs during rehearsals and tended to play too fast just to get things over with. So it was for the best really. Trouble is, he was a very good drummer. The replacement was a friend of one of the band and wasn't properly auditioned before he was 'in'. But he's a lovely guy, very keen, loves our stuff and is very supportive. Trouble is, he's not a great drummer. Bands are funny things.

As for hassle, in my experience it's more hassle to change out a backline during the gig. Faster changeovers keep things moving. But I'm not arguing that people SHOULD lend their rigs - it's clearly a personal decision and I'd respect anyone who wouldn't want to let me use their gear. I'm just a little surprised at how precious most people here seem to be about what are supposed to be rugged, well-built, hard-gigging pieces of equipment. Fortunately, I've never had the bad experiences that many here have recounted and, frankly, if I had then I'd be questioning myself for putting up with gigging in such circumstances at all. After all, where's the pleasure in playing a heaving, cramped pub full of pissed-up punters falling over your gear, spilling drinks everywhere and not really interested in listening to the music in the first place?

Not ebay - I've never used it and don't even have an account - but I've bought a few cabs on BC with no problems.

And another thing. All those who think that other bassists are not to be trusted with a rig presumably think that all the amps and cabs for sale here have been abused to within an inch of their lives and are therefore not worth buying?

Streamed data is converted to audio and then discarded whereas 'downloaded' data is generally saved and can be locally replayed many times without further downloading. A technicality perhaps, but important when it comes to considering royalty payments by the service providing the data. As TimR points out, a radio station pays royalties every time something is broadcast, which is analogous to streaming. The law is indeed behind the times. We don't even need a TV licence to watch iPlayer content, which I suspect is not really the original intention of the licence.

These sort of topics remind of the sort of trial-by-media stuff that we're seeing with Oscar wotsisname. Is he/isn't he? should they/shouldn't they? It's all pointless speculation. Just let them reform if they want to and let's see what actually happens, then we'll all know if it was a good idea. Their last O2 thing would suggest that a reunion will be well received, but who really knows until it happens? I like Zep, but I didn't go to the O2 thing because the ticket prices were ludicrous, so I just bought the DVD. I assume any reunion concerts will also command silly prices so I won't go to those either. But I bet enough people will, and what's wrong with that? Good luck to them.

How do session musicians get paid? A fixed price for the session and that's it? Nothing for the session and a share in royalties ? A mixture of the above?

I'd probably also be annoyed if I was continually lending out my gear but it doesn't seem to happen that often and when it does it's for a good reason and I've borrowed gear about as many times as I've lent it, so it all comes out in the wash.
