What a bummer. Why ??????? BBC bollox. same when I was living in Spain.
Well, if viewers in other countries would like to buy a UK televisions licence and thus contribute to BBC funding . . . . . .

The general public are discovering the 'Bass Guitar'!
flyfisher replied to cloudburst's topic in General Discussion
At this rate we'll soon see famous bassists being given a country's highest honour in recognition of their contribution to music. Er, hang on . . . . . http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19532151 -
power tripping off due to a 9v pedal ??
flyfisher replied to adriansmith247's topic in General Discussion
Agreed. I can't see how a pedal could cause the sort of fault that would make the mains trip out. The battery idea would be a very good test and should put the OP in the clear. -

25:15 - Pino explaining that he felt embarrassed because he felt it was a bit out of tune, too forward in the mix and "all musician's think they're rubbish". Got to love the very British understatement. Legend.

Fair point about Camel and Focus (probably my favourite prog band also). I reckon it's because 'prog' became synonymous with extravagant production, as epitomised by Rick Wakeman and hence his 'Prog God' award. Focus, on the other hand, was all about the music - and bloody good it was too! (IMHO, other opinions are available, terms and conditions apply)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19492677 I wonder if it's now fashionable to reveal that among my vinyl collection are The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, Journey ToThe Centre Of The Earth and The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur And The Knights Of The Round Table? OK, maybe not.

Almost. There are various ways of wiring up such cabs, though I'm not familiar enough with 'standard practice' (if there is one) to give a definitive answer of how that ARE wired, only how they MIGHT be wired. A 210 cab could be wired as: 2 x 16ohm drivers in parallel to give an 8 ohm cab 2 x 4ohm drivers in series to give an 8 ohm cab a 410 cab could be wired as: 4 x 32ohm drivers in parallel to give an 8 ohm cab 2 x 8ohm drivers in series to give 16 ohms and these two in parallel with another 2 x 8ohm drivers in series, which gives an 8 ohm cab 4 x 2ohm drivers in series to give 8 ohms The only way to be sure is to open up the cab and check the actual wiring (and the labels on the drivers!).
From what I understand, pedals will only draw what they require from the PSU but will suffer from loss of power/tone/volume if they don't get enough. Am I right, or a meringue?
You're right. If the PSU can't provide enough power then things won't work properly for a variety of reasons - a fuse may blow or (most likely with low voltage PSUs) the voltage is reduced to limit the total power that can be drawn. A lower voltage obviously messes things up and all sorts of unwanted stuff can happen. The basic rules are to ensure the PSU voltage rating is correct and that the current capability (milliamps) is AT LEAST the rating of the device being powered. A higher current capability doesn't matter - the device will only draw what it needs.
11 pages of some people saying tribute bands are ok and others disagreeing, is enough to send anyone round the twist.
Perhaps. If you read it all.
Somebody, anybody, please close this thread, it is beyond boring.
More 'command and control'? "I don't like this so I want it stopped, regardless of what anyone else thinks".
I don't think anyone is suggesting force feeding any art form to people.
Well, there has been plenty of general comment about bands playing for free spoiling things for those trying to earn a living from gigging, which is a sort of 'command and control' sentiment.
All we suggest is that leaving things to market forces seems to result in everyone looking to the common denominator and everything getting blander and blander (like cable/satelite TV - 800+ channels of fluff rather than infinite variation).
I agree, but it's the lesser of two (or more) evils isn't it? Dumbing down (which is actually rather disrespectful for the masses who actually like such things - who amongst us has the right to decide what's worthy or not?) might affect the mass media but there'll always be some basement jazz club somewhere to cater for the minority.
-
It's all a bit mad!
Perhaps. But it's also a choice between bands being free to play what they want, where they want, for however much they want and for audiences to be free to choose to hear what they want, where they want for how much they want, or some sort of centralised scheme where musicians are 'licenced', fees are prescribed and ticket prices fixed (and possibly even different genres are somehow enforced).

It's possible but I'm not sure the hassle will be worthwhile and I tend to agree that getting another amp might be the simplest, and probably best, way of driving lots of cabs. But if you're really keen to give it a try then you'll need to make/buy some suitable cables so that you can connect cabs electrically in series. Basically, you need to connect the cabs in such a way that the overall load presented to the amp doesn't fall below 4 ohms. With three 8 ohm cabs, you could wire two of them in series to give 16 ohms into one amp output and then connect the other 8 ohm cab to the other amp output giving 16+8 in parallel, which is a load of 5.3 ohms and is fine for the amp. BUT - wiring two cabs electrically in series IS NOT the same as connecting a standard cable from one cab to the next. Electrically, that would still be a parallel connection and the two cabs will therefore form a 4 ohm load. If you then add another 8 ohm cab to the amp it will 'see' a 2.6 ohm load and this may damage the amp. So three 8 ohm cabs can be connected to a 4 ohm amp but it's fiddly and, probably, a little bit pointless.
As far as I'm concerned there's no better buzz than leaving the stage ( ususally thinking thank f#ck that's over,my self confidence levels are not high) with people telling me " Your tunes are great" and "your sociopolitical stance has made me question the way I live my life".
" Your tunes are great" - nice compliment. "your sociopolitical stance has made me question the way I live my life" - too earnest for me and just a little bit scary.

US music file-sharer must pay nearly half a mill damages!
flyfisher replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I guess it's a bit of legal jargon but 'punitive damages' sounds more like a fine to me and plain 'damages' to relate to the actual loss. Fair point about hosting a downloaded file for subsequent copying by others. I can see that could significantly increase the copyright holder's losses, though I read the article as being only concerned with the downloads of the person concerned. It's interesting to ponder how this sort of thing is ever going to be sorted out though. Historically mass copyright fraud was never a big problem because of the difficulty and cost of doing the copying. Photocopying a book, mfor example, was almost as much trouble and cost as just buying the thing in the first place, but digital content and a world wide web has changed all that. I can understand these legal actions but I can't see it really being the answer to the basic problem. -

flyfisher replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I can't see that the actual 'damage' to the copyright holder can be very much ($10 for the CD perhaps?), which is probably why the courts/jury has the $150k fine at their disposal.. Thing is, they have to make such examples of people and hope it puts everyone else off because, let's face it, the legal system couldn't really cope with the mass disobedience of millions of people around the world downloading stuff. -
No, I don't think I mean this - when you're improvising along to a chord sequence, I think it's about inventing quickly enough (and well enough) that you can easily keep up. Not specific bass lines, but improvisation
I can jam along to a chord sequence and improvise reasonably well (it's the sort of thing we often do when writing new songs) . . . . except that I feel my repertoire is too limited so I end up being a bit repetitive. It's the sort of thing that prevents me playing any form of lead guitar, although I'm reasonably OK when just strumming chords. I've probably not spent enough time on my scales and stuff.
probably get slagged off for saying this, but, I would rather go and see a good tribute playing in the local pub, free admission decent beer nice and dry, than pay £100 to stand in a wet cold field or a massive arena with crap sound , with about 50000 other people watching the original thing from about half a mile back.
Not by me. It's probably a combination of age and 'been there, done that' but I do think huge gigs are overrated. Still, there's no denying the demand and I guess it's one of those things you have to experience once or twice. There's a lot of talk at the moment about a Rolling Stones 50th anniversay tour - any guesses about how much those tickets are likely to be and the sizes of the venues? I won't be in the queue for that one.
Agree in writing songwriting credits and make a simple recording as soon as you've written the song, or sooner.
Not only that, be wary about anyone else 'helping' you with your songs. I heard a story recently about a young singer/songwriter who recently signed to a big label and was in the studio to record some of his stuff with some session musicians. Apparently, someone suggested a minor change to the song and ended up on the songwriting credits. Presumably this will involve a share of any royalties. I'm glad I don't have to make a living out of music - it's a jungle out there!
This, a million times over. You'll be thanking your lucky stars when they get royally screwed, and sure as the day is long, that will happen. Labels will rinse you dry given the slightest chance.
I'd guess the odds are certainly with the OP when it comes to the band getting screwed over, but it would probably make no difference if he hadn't been fired. Remind me about the tiny percentage of bands that ever make it big?

Ridiculous ticket prices might be one reason.
