My Warwick has got the most wear on it and it's all from playing (and maybe a little from not looking after it very well...) The most noticeable is where the wood has been worn away from my thumb resting on the pick ups. There's other places it's going as well which is playing related, a few good knocks and dings around the corners, and rusty pole pieces and hardware.

I think this is quite common for Warwicks though as I've seen quite a few in similar condition, don't think it helps that the top wood on the bass is a soft maple with just an oil finish so it doesn't take much to ding it!

  2. Sorry to bring about such a boring topic, but I've been lost in the world of pick choosing recently!

I have been using the green dunlop (0.88mm) picks but I was after something a bit thicker so tried the purple ones (1.14mm). I liked the thickness but they came with a shiny coating on which made them quite difficult to keep hold of mid gig! The most recent picks I've been using are these http://www.djmmusic.com/ItemMatrix.asp?GroupCode=1O-5&MatrixType=1

Heavy Planet Wave picks, these are RUBBISH!!! Never buy them!! The logo on them is raised but seems to go through the pick making them weak, the 5 pack I bought only lasted me a month and all the picks snapped on stage!

So I'm looking for some recommendations!!

  3. I've just put up a new blog post about a transcription I've done of Anthony Jackson playing 'Take The A Train'. There's some pretty interesting stuff going on over the D7b5 and I'd love to know your thoughts on it!

that's right, but at the same time, i still want to maintain the look. i don't want to have my bass up at my chest and all that business.

I think "the look" should definitely come after technique. Also check out Scott Devine's channel on YouTube he's got some great lessons covering the basics such as strap height. As a rule of thumb though you wanna have your bass in roughly the same position it is when you play sitting down.

Also I wouldn't worry too much playing with your thumb over the neck, I've seen Marcus Miller playing bass notes to chords this way, yours does seem to make your hand slant at a strange angle though. This will probably become more of a problem when you start playing faster runs and such. Try practising some scales with the 'one finger per fret' rule and you'll soon find your thumb returning behind the neck!

  5. Hey!

I'm currently using Guitar Pro 5 to produce all the PDFs for my lessons, transcriptions etc

It works but I don't think it looks particularly nice, especially for younger students. I was wondering if there's anything out there that will give me a bit more control over the way my finished sheets will look. Change fonts and sizes and stuff. Also if there's a function to make chord charts that would be an added bonus!

    Thanks!

Aha - I recognise you from "Friends of the Bride".

Yeah, can vouch for Thomann's stuff. Excellent quality despite it's budget pricetag.

    That's us!

Cool will give Thomann another go :)

  7. Hi guys!

Just put a new blog post up that you might be interested in, it's a new ii V I lick that I've been working on with a Adderley ending on it. It's the first lick that I've been using that I've written rather than transcribed so would appreciate positive and negative feedback on it!!

  8. Hi guys,

I'm looking for some new lights for my wedding band as the old ones are a bit battered now! They don't need to be anything super powerful, the ones we have at the min are small multi coloured LED lights that are sound sensitive.

I've found these http://www.thomann.de/gb/stairville_led_par_56_alu_schwarz.htm but we got our last ones from here and having to use euro to british adapters is a bit of a pain. Is there anything else a bit closer to home that anyone can recommend?

    cheers!

I do like them, but I would have preferred to hear piano take over on the melody for the repeat section of Autumn Leaves with a nice counterpoint bass line pulsing through!

    Great work!

Will have to give it a go mate!

  10.
You can go to JazzStandards.com - I've heard from quite a few guys, that the first 100 tunes in there are all played over and over in jams, so you could start by number 1 and, considering you spend 1 week on a tune, after 100 weeks you'll have all them down. Well it's, at least, this sort of process I'm doing right now. Here's another cool thing, a list taken from series of weekly jam sessions in well-known club (you can see that some tunes are being called more often than others): 10/22 Owl & Thistle Confirmation Green Dolphin Street Minority Stardust Jitterbug Waltz Bittersweet What Is This Thing Called Love Blues Tune Concentrate on You 11/01 Owl & Thistle Night and Day Blue Monk Recordame Oleo Confirmation Teach Me Tonight Alone Together Have You Met Miss Jones 11/15 Owl & Thistle Caravan Invitation Bemsha Swing Gone With The Wind How Insensitive (6/8 feel) 11/22 Owl & Thistle Solar Bye Bye Blackbird Corcovado There Will Never Be Another You Lover Man Yes Or No 11/28 Pirattis Craft Bar Footprints St. Thomas Have You Met Miss Jones (7/4) Feeling Good All The Things You Are Girl From Ipanema Softly As A Morning Sunrise Dindi Bye Bye Blackbird Recordame 11/29 Owl & Thistle There is No Greater Love Nothing Personal (G minor Blues) Ishfahan Green Dolphin Street Inner Urge I Remember You 12/06 Owl And Thistle Nardis What Is This Thing Called Love Nothing Personal Invitation Seven Steps To Heaven Well You Needn't Passion Dance Gingerbread Man Other Tunes (Not sure when these were called but I remember them being played) LadyBird Freedie Freeloader Beatrice Blue Bossa Red Clay I Hear A Rhapsody This I Dig Of You One Note Samba Song For My Father
Thanks for that mate, very useful!

  11. Hey!

I've started going to a few jazz jam nights, just watching not playing at the moment. I was just wondering what songs are most likely to come up and are pretty essential to have under your belt?

The songs I'm most comfortable with are probably Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Blue Monk (and a few other blues tunes) and Take The 'A' Train. I thought these would have been safe bets but I've not heard any of these tunes called yet!

I'm doing as much ear training as I can so that I'll have a better chance at playing tunes I'm not familiar with but it's a pretty slow process.

So I was just wondering what songs you guys have played on the most or heard getting called the most when you've been at jam nights?

    Cheers
