2.
The '80s ones certainly won't be Chinese-made, I'm fairly certain they were only manufacturing in Japan back then (although they might have started doing some stuff in Korea by the end of the decade); if it's in decent nick I'd say £300-350 ish would be a good price.
Sh|t I meant to type Japan not China, you're right. But yes £350 is a decent price depending on the condish.
3. Tokai makes quality instruments, from the same factory as Fender in China, before your second post I was acutally thinkg that £350 would be a fair price and you beat me to it, if the conditions are good and it plays well you're on to a winner
4. Warning! If you remove the lacquer, the neck will become so unstable it will change action at the slightest change of weather / humidity etc. You'll find that a maple neck which is left unlaquered by a manufacturer, such as musicman for example has either been selected out of a stronger lump or treated with some particular preserving method which allows it to keep it's tensile strenght while the timber is bare. I am not making this up but a friend of mine also had a Squier which he didn't like the feel of the lacquer, took it to a a mate with a belt sander and had it fully unlaquered. Within days after restringing it the neck was like a flag on a pole, so bad he had to junk it in the end. Be careful, you have a beautiful bass (I have the very same one) don't ruin it.
5.
Its like having a robot for a wife. Itl do everything you want it to but in the most boring and unsatisfying way.
Yeah but I bet you can turn the bloody robot wife off when she is doing your head in, pull the plug or, switch it off like, know what I mean?

Ramps

double-sided tape is an easy "undoable" option, some people screw them onto the body, depends how sacred is your bass to you.
7. yeah yeah Steve Harris, this is the bass I am talking about
8. I vote for mirrored like the Iron Maiden geezer who's name escapes me right now, something Harris?
9. are you going to display asking prices in the correct for sale section or is it a private deal only?
10. I love my Promethean now... I can take the head anywhere, plug it in whatever cab, or carry it as a combo and it's got great balls of fire, pukka!
11.
Or can it just go to a high street electrical repair shop? Don't know how this happend on my little Laney practice amp - but went to plug in this morning and the plastic around the socket has broken and the socket's floating free inside. Maybe the cats knocked it over and it landed on the lead. I've posted this in the repair section, but didn't think the question was specialised enough for that section.
Find a Maplin and it's a pretty easy d.i.y. job

I don't like any potatoes, I prefer crumpets me!
13. Hi Dave, nice to see you here, personally I don't give a hoot about the argument in question, but I can tell you that the sandbergs are nice basses, specially their 5 strings maple jazz with active / passive preamp, however as Jazz bass go, I can reassure you that all the more established and brain savy members here will tell you that, you can go round circles and spend silly money on boutique vamped jazz or precision basses but... in the end, ain't nothing like the real thing so stick with your Fender or get a better one, ask in fact. OutToPlayJazz about that wicked Limited Ed Jazz he got and he will tell you chapter and verse about it. Take care and please look after my Bongo with extreme care when you get it next month. Fran
14. Thanks for the input, I shall not bother then.
15. I've found some F-hole decals which I would like to apply to one of my basses, they are easily removed in case they look out of place but I seek a general advice whether I should do it or is it sacriledge? You tell me... Here are the F-holes and this is the bass I "might" put them on, what you reckon?
16.
If you want some foam strips I've still got a few left http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=873970
Quite an overwhealming response chaps, I had 7 strips left, as of now 5 of them have been secured by pm, and I've only got 2 left (they're free by the way). One left only now!

20. Dingwall do strings for up 37" scale
21. I also have to agree 100% and praise Proel (MarkBass UK Distributors) for the extent of their service. In my case a in Jan 09 I bought my dream combo: a MB CMD102P however earlier this year a new tube head came out the Little Mark Tube, and I asked Darren at the Bass Merchant (another top bloke but you already know that) if he could enquire with Proel to see if the new LM Tube head could be easily swapped with the original (LM II) he came back in a flash and said that not only it can be done but that Proel would be happy to swap it themselves so to safeguard my warranty that no work had been done by hillbillies, the turnover was just 3 days, I drove down to Bass Merchant, dropped the amp, Darren lent me a similar combo (genz benz or sommat) and 3 days later he sent me back my amp and even arranged collection of the loan amp! Proel were supa nice but Darren made it all happen thanks to his savoir-faire and excellent customer vs distributors relations. On the plus side not 2 days after the exchange I managed to sell my original MB LMII head and made a good part of my money back... oh and Darren did apply a nice basschat forum discount. Top Marks on all account. The tube preamp has made a considerable change in sound, it has given the amp the required warmth it lacked and with the tube blend knob you can dial it in at your perusal from totally solid state to 50% solid/tube to 100% tube preamp offering me the best of both worlds. My combo went from this... add this.... to this....

25.
It's all about the power handling. Jacks have a current capacity of around 5 Amps, which equates to 100W @ 4 Ohms, 200W @ 8 Ohms and 400W @ 16 Ohms. That was all well and good when the biggest amps were 200W Marshall Majors, but times have changed. There was a trend in the late 70's / early 80's to use XLR connectors for high power speaker connections. Most 3-pin XLR's are rated around 15 Amps, which gives 900W @ 4 Ohms, 1800W @ 8 Ohms (we can ignore 16 Ohms from this point on, as it's only valve amps that output into 16 Ohms) Speakons can handle currents of up to 30 Amps, in fact the new 4-pole versions are rated for 50. 30 Amps equates to 1800W @ 2 Ohms, 3600W @ 4 Ohms and a ridiculous 7200W @ 8 Ohms. With modern bass amps commonly putting out upwards of 500W into 4 Ohms (and let's not even get into power amps, many of which can deliver over 2000W in bridge mode, why would you use a jack? In 1963 it was the best that was available, but since then the rest of your rig has moved on, so why not the speaker connectors? A
Good explanation, and well put, I am sold. I shall get some of these speakon cables then.
