J or P?
Judging by what it says on the Squier website, if you read the specs the neck width at the nut is of 1.50"in / 38mm same as their Jazz whereas their Precision width at the nut is of 1.625in / 41.3mm Hence the Jaguar and Jazz necks are identical in size, perfick!
 2.
Hi! Might be stretching it a bit, but if I were to purchase a combo now, Id get an Ibanez Promethean. £500 with a gig bag, removable 500W amp head, 10" cabinet, pretty damn light, headphones and aux in. Similar to the MB sound apparently.
Yeah but unjustifiable expense for a bit of noodling in me cabin.... I like those too but as I said I need cheap and cheerful.
 3. As you know I work on a ship, long sea passages and many hours to kill waiting at anchor sometimes between pilot station to pilot station, I will always have a bass with me in my cabin which I play through a Tascam MP-BT1 bass trainer, but the sound through the headphones is nothing to write home about, I need a small practice amp max 30 watt which really sound like a bass amp, last year I bought a Roland Micro amp and it sounded plasitcky and too "roland-ish" again a failure and I've flogged it back on ebay. I am now thinking about trying this Ashdown Perfect 10 the price range is ok and 30 watts plus the facility to to have a CD or MP3 input is ideal for playing along my fav tracks. Has anyone owned or tried one and what do they sound like? Pray tell! Thanks
 4.
Order here and get a free set of strings chucked in: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=93738
Thanks dannybuoy, I'll keep it in mind
 5. I've already got my name down on one of them at that price it would be rude not to, here is the link: http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/Bass_Guitars/...1114/p9544.aspx
 6. That's easy.... I don't have any pics but it was a sh*tty jap copy of a Les Paul bass, given to me as a gift, one day I found the neck was so badly warped, no one could fix it, I was so crossed with it, I put it in the fireplace and watch it burn. The name on the headstock was HB. never seen another similar. Thank god for that too. I think HB was Harley Benton..... not sure. Long may they burn, they are sh*te.
 7.
I have a '93 62 reissue (3ts, rw) can someone tell me how to tell if its an export or non-export model? Fingerboard edges are not bound btw Gold logo thanks
Serial number?
 8.
Guinness is right. Man that is gorgeous. What's the damage to your wallet?
Apparently its about an extra $400 on top of the normal price, now what's that in pounds?... about £261.64, not bad huh?
 9. For the month of August only Ernie Ball Music Man has a special ordeing window where you can order any model of basses and guitars (except the Classic series) with a highly figure roasted maple neck, ebony fngerboard, and their limited edition BFR inlay at the 12th fret, only problem is... no choice of body colour as they only offer it in black sugar whatever that is, as per the pic below which you can click on for more details and pics
 10.
i've just laughed so much i dropped the laptop.
Well you'd better secure that laptop then, plenty more where that came from
 11.
It is truly wonderful and I don't know how you can sell it! Using a Squier for this type of project is a great idea. I would love to have a go at that. Maybe my daughter will one day play bass and I can customise one for her ... Davo
I am glad you like it, I am not planning to sell it anytime soon as it is a real good player, but even if I get fed up with the moo looks I can always reverse it back to natural as it is not painted, those black blotches are cut outs from an easy-peel transfers similar to those used to protect small screens. The pickguard can also be swapped with the original and the pickup covers and control knobs are spares, the original are in a tidy box at home.
 12.
.... and you can all pile in flame me there! ;-)
No, you're alright, if I want to speak to a knob I can unzip my own trowsers, thanks.
 13. Look peeps, at the end of the day, I know the bass shape might not be to everyone's taste, as I've repeatedly said, I myself find it a little odd, however there are a couple of things that crash the "culture shock" impression, one is the impressive ergonomics: i.e. it wears well and plays comfortably, and two no matter what anyone can say about the looks it more than makes up for it with the array of sounds you can get out of just one bass. And finally: all comments are appreciated both positive and negative ones, however there is that element of respect that some of you tends forget when describing someoene else's instruments. Let me explain: personally I am not fond of Warwicks, Status, headless of any kind, composite bass necks in general, yet I wouldn't offend an owner of any of these basses by saying your bass is FUGLY, is like someone saying, Jesus mate your wife looks well rough! You just don't do that. That is the part I don't like about this forum: people always go that extra length to be out and out rude. Have some common sense and respect and if you see something you don't particularly like, just say "not my cuppa" or not for me, and keep your nasty comments to yourselves.
 14.
I had a feeling these were going to be seriously good, especially after watching the Ed Friedland video on the 'Al a couple of months ago. Seriously cool looking, too. I seem to remember asking you a while ago GW (but don't remember the response - Duh!), but how does 'Al 5 compare with your 25th Anniversary/Reflex? They obviously have the same mad bad and dangerous preamp, so I wondered if they were particularly different in terms of playing/sound?
OTPJ, on paper one would think that there might be a lot of similarities bwtween the two, interestingly enough the only similarity I have discovered is in the neck profile everything else is a departure from one another and I'll explain essentially why: First of all on the 25th Anniversary, the body is made out of a bottom slab of Ash, with a mahogany tone block that runs under the pickups from the bridge to the neck joint, the whole thing is covered by a highly figured maple cap. In addition to this my 25th has a rosewood f/board. See pic below of the guitar cut out: (bear in mind the basses are not chambered like the guitars): You then have one Humbucker with ceramic poles and two neodymium single coils with phantom coils fitted under them for hum cancelling purpose. The preamp is a lot more subtle than that of either the Bongo or the Big Al 5 and it perfectly compliments the 25th by giving it more of a deep marimba type of tone rather than an out an out rock machine, it is a gentle giant with an incredible array of beautful sweet sounds, yeah 16 of them if you count active vs passive. The whole bass weighs 10.08lbs / 4.76Kgs On the opposite scale you have the Big Al 5, made entirely out of African Mahogany, which in terms of density vs resonance is very very similar to basswood and has the welcoming feature of being just under a pound lighter at just 9.12lbs / 4.42Kgs. Pheww. Now contrary to the 25th which has a rosewood f/board my Big Al has a maple one and we all know the diference between these are immense to begin with. The sounds you can get out of the Big Al are all more out there as in brighter and more centre present rather than subsonic like the 25th. Of course you can make things really deep with the active preamp, and dark with the tone in passive but when you play all 3 pickups on both basses with all the controls flat one (the Big Al) is more agreessive than the other so, my best way to descibe the difference is to compare the 25th to a Bentley with all the posh timmings and the Big Al to a muscle car like Mitsubishi Evo or a Scooby Impreza. **cking fast and Furious to give you an idea. I am actualyl glad that the 2 are different, if it wasn't that way I would have felt like burning a hole in my pocket by buying two similar expensive basses in different body shapes but thankfully no! There's a sea in between them, and if you like me are a bit of a Music Man fan you can't have one with out the other, and then you know me, I've got a Bongo 5, I had and sold a Stingray 5 (waitng to save for a Classic one in Fiesta Red for next year...) Life goes on and I am very pleased with my choice, you ought to try one and I guarante you would regain your passion for the EBMM stuff, as I know you had a mental fall out with them. Cheers
 15.
Pleased to see it is still being played
Believe me it is getting played, I got rid of all the other Jazz! In fact, soon enough it will start to show some "road worn" sings too.
 16. You know, this is still my no.1 Jazz Bass, it's a Squier Classic Vibe, souped up with Seymour Duncan stacked humbuckers, totally noise free when each p/u is played single. All wiring and pots been replaced with original Fender CTS and waxed cloth wire, it was a labour of love and I take it everywhere, this week I took it with me to work on my ship, together with the Tascam Bass trainer so I can practice along. I've compared this bass to an MIM and a 90's MIA and it's still came tops and I am very selective when I do comparison, the neck just plays itself and the basswood body together with those pickups just give it an amazing sound. Oh yeah and it was "mooo'd up" by me here is a slideshow of it in my ship cabin at work http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/CaptMoto/Jaz...email#slideshow
 17.
Do you really believe that - or is it simply some late night/early morning drunken rambling? Fender basses are full of design compromises that stem from the limits of what Fender considered to be cost-effective back in the 1950s. Had Leo Fender really seen the future even if it was only as far forward as 1980, I would like to think that his bass guitars would have been far better designed and made.
You are not making many friends here with these statements, some people will be hurt in their pride. Fact is you can pickup a Precision and plug it in a dog of an amp and it'll still sound good. Most of the modern high end basses need a more modern expenisve rig to match the high power preamps and electronic wizardry I am all for the future and when I see a valid innovative instrument I will give it credit but nevertheless, I will still always recognize that most modern manufacturer are still using blue print of Fender basses as a template on which to draw similar sounds from, no matter how advanced their gizmo's might be they all try to copy a P sound or a J sound, go figure.
 18.
Tasty. I read the review about them in Bass Guitar Magazine and they sound great. Good to hear a review from a BC member. Rock on, Funk on or 'whatever you want' on by the sounds of it.
did you watch this demo?
 19.
Right. So no more GAS then?
Well not for the moment, 9 basses are enough, I might make that 10 when the Squier Jaguar VM comes out.
 20. 10 days into the ownership of this here beast.... I am a happy bunny! This bass might look odd to most of us (yeah, I also find it a bit funny looking) but I've always been adventurous, and believe me Ernie's Balls have never been bigger than this Quite simply the bass rocks!! Throw any music style at it and it can totally prevail in all of them. Soundwise this bass is a mixture of vintage Ray, with a heavy touch of the Bongo turbo power (that 18 volts preamp / eq is a force to be reckoned with) and the fact that the single coils pickup can brush up Jazz Bass tones as well as Precision at the touch of a button, no pun intended: it's got loads of buttons. I am particularly loving the "all switches up" position which gives the bridge and middle pickups together in series, with the active / passive switch in passive mode and the tone control half way off, this gives a perfect Bernard Edwards tone. Yeah the bass is funkee and despite it's odd looking shape, very very comfortable to play. I can't put it down! You own one of these and I guarantee you, it will be the only bass you take to a gig! It does it all. Go try one!
 21.
Grand Wazoo - I am indescribably impressed that you have that. Great story to it, too. If you plan on dying any time soon, could I have it?
My son has already claimed it, sorry.
Thats one way to wish GW a happy birthday! (see bottom of BassChat home page )
Thanks Clarky, yup its my birthday.
 22. I cannot believe that a post I made about what I thought was a nice gesture, without prejudice towards the Metallica geezer whom I know very little of as their music is not my cuppa, has instead turned into a bash fest. Narrow minded doesn't even come close to describe some of the response seen. Long may live Jaco memory and legacy, I was lucky to see him live twice once in 1982 with Weather Report in Rome and once with his own band in Naples in 1986. What I saw with my very eyes was a musician gifted with a talent that I will probably never see gain in my lifetime. I consider myself extremely lucky to actually own something that belonged to Jaco, in his last set in Naples, he launched his wooly hat in the audience and I caught it! Here it is: The weather in Naples was extremely hot and him playing with a wooly hat was probably not a good idea, which is maybe why he chucked it, when I caught it, it was soaked in sweat and it has since been washed of course, it's worth nothing to anyone except the memory of the occasion for me, it is not something I stole, to me it's priceless. I mean, it was Jaco's hat for god sake! Here are the ticket stubs I still keep
 23.
Hmmm but I like the look of this custom 55 p bass they are listing, if not the price http://www.coda-music.com/product_info.php...roducts_id=8010
me too, let's 'ave a wip around lads, help a a needy man
 24.
would tweaking the eq on both amp and bass not give you all the tonal and sound control you need?
Sorry mate, I assume you are not getting what I am trying to tell you... best leave it at that. Good luck
 25.
would i then not start losing some of my sound?? by that i dont mean volume I mean the decided sound i have dialed into my eq?
Nah you wouldnt with a decent compressor, something like this... Read the review of it here: http://www.markbass.it/risorse/allegato_pro.php?id=152
