1.
What a splendid day As always it's great putting faces to names, and hanging out with a big ol bunch of really lovely people. Had a great time in the jam room, really enjoyed Dave Swift and Paul Geary's talk, playing OBBM's 1970s Fenders, nice to meet Kiwi at last. Thanks so much to Hamster and Mrs Hamster, Nik, and everyone else involved in setting up the Bash, top work! I'm amazed to have won the Fender Squier VM Jag HB !! I had just bought some tickets before the raffle was held, and Timmo got the first ticket, he had the Orange amp cos he's a lefty, then Green 461 was called, I thought my tickets looked blue so I didn't react, then when no-one claimed it they called "NIGEL!" I was looking around for another Nigel while the people behind me were laughing because they could see my winning ticket in my hand It was finally pointed out to me I'd won and I received my amazing prize from Dave Swift and Paul Geary and Throwoff. Thanks so much to Throwoff for asking Fender UK to donate the prize. It's a lovely bass! I have to write and record one more bass line for an album by one of the artists I work with and I'm going to use the Jag, it's a dubby sort of line and the Jag has a massive tone thanks to the active circuit, so it should sound great! Once again, thank you!
Yeah I can see you already
7. Have you got it yet, Dave?
8. Dingwall ABZ 4 or 5 strings doesn't matter - Thinner (and lighter) than any Ibanez I've tried.

10.
+1! Surely the most important control. Won't be queueing for this one.
Ah but... those were the Made in China ones, has anyone seen the Fender American DeLuxe Series? Now these are interesting, 4 and 5 strings... Check them out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGqbupqCrjg
11.
Cool question, kasbridge ! It would be great if we could know : What is the one which has the best value for money ? In other words, How much did you (all fellow groovers) pay for your iPh bass tuner ? Thanks
I've bought the Polytune one during their lauch at the 50% introductory offer of £2.49 wheras the Peterson one was a bit dearer at £6.99 but then... both pedals will set you back a 100 notes each so... bargain
12. I had one and modded it loads. The mods I did were divided in two, those who were necessity to improve the sound and those which were just to make it better looking. The original pickups are a bit on the thin side, and they hummmmmmmmmmm alot. so I got some Seymour Duncan stacked humbuckers vintage sounding STK1B and STK1N b and n means bridge and neck. Then I changed all the wiring loop with proper wax cloth coated wires, CST pots and finally changed the plastic nut to a proper bone one. The other mods I did which were not necessary but improved my appreciation of it, were original Fender reverse tuners, and a Fender logo neck plate, and then.... I moo'ed the bass in cow print and pinked the pickup cover and knobs. If I find the pic again I'll show it to you, alas there is a thread buried here somewhere going back 2 or 3 years when I did the whole transformation. It was fun.
13. small review from a man on talkbass that has got one of these: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f8/squier-vintage-modified-precision-v-whos-got-one-1011452/index2.html#post14855429
14. I also would agree that the Polytune of iPhone is great but... ha! there is an even better one out there and that is the iStroboSoft by Peterson strobo tuner with a suberb accuracy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeiB7QPLtrc
15.
Most stingrays have a plastic shim fitted as standard I think?
ALL of the EBMM have shims, I had 6 different ones and they all came with shims even the most expensive 25th Anniversary model before it became the Reflex
16. The biggest problem now is to choose the right colour... hmmmm
17. 18. It works for me, I liked them so much I had to get one of each
19.
Thanks, I might give him a call. I am mainly talking about the whole ernie ball, musicman, stingray logo. The gold lettering is virtually invisible on the left hand side. For some reason it is just fading away, not sure the pic shows it very well tbh. Cheers Thebassman
I see now what you mean, well in that case I believe Ian won't be able to help you because he won't have a new ernie ball decal unless you can provide him with one, and in that case you are better off sending it off to the factory.
20. So you are talking about that chip under the edge of the headstock by the EBMM logo? Send my friend Ian Allerton an email with a larger pic, he is in Herts, he'll give you a honest quote, he can probably retouch that without needing a whole respray and you never knew there was chip on it... http://www.guitar-works.co.uk/ the email is: "][email protected] Tell him Fran Camardo sent ya.
21. What's wrong with it, can you show me a couple of pics?
22. Bear in mind Dave uses thomasticks j144 strings flatwounds these are a very light gauge with the g string being 0.43 and the he uses a roundwound low b close to 130 gauge that makes the g string slippery like a eel and the low b slightly bigger . Each to his own I would have a set of .45 to 105 with a 125 low b. That could the reason why those strings feel like that but if u were to get a four strings one I'm sure there will be plenty of space for a decent strings spacing. Ps it sounded really nice and organic when in passive mode so I recommend you give one a go
23.
That does look very p-bass while incorporating a lot of modern hardware appointments which will improve balance etc, the proof is obviously very much in the playing and Mr Swift is clearly happy with it! I may need a trip to Bass Direct to sit and noodle on many p-bass type things...(I'll start with the Manchester Bass Lounge stock though as am going there anyway next week)
Andy, I've actually played Dave's one because I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I can now see that the reason why it suits him so well is because of the very powerful onboard preamp capable of some serious lows, other than that the weight is perfectly balanced it has very nice thin and sleek neck for a fiver with the only problem perhaps being the outer strings too close to the edge for my liking. That was 3 weeks ago, then we met again last weekend and I asked him if the honeymoon was over with the Xotic and he said oh no it's perfect for this gig (the jools gig) except that he also mentioned something about the e and b strings being too close to the edge, but it's something he can live with it, and so it appears it might be a keeper for him, considering that he goes through a lot of 5 strings P basses in his search for the ultimate one. The Dingwall Super P its still one of his favourite but he is waiting for John East to send him a revised preamp to suits his needs, he explained to me in quick details but..... wooooosh it went all over my head, too complicated
24. A bloke by the name of Dave Swift for as long as I can remember has been on the search for the ultimate sounding P Bass and recently he stumbled upon one that he reckons is mustard. The bass in question is called Xotic and the model is this one: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Xotic_XP5_3_tone_sunburst.html although Dave settled for a Shoreline Gold
25. As above they should both have same volume but you need to remember that the strings are tighter by the bridge and therefore unless you put some beef in your picking by the bridge you would get a quiter volume from the back one, and one way of balancin the 2 volumes would be by lowering the neck pickup and raise the back one. Another intersting fact is that these pickups are front and back specific and cannot be not interchanged because the bridge one it's slightly wider than the neck one du to the fact that Jazz bases have very narrow neck at the nut and as a result the strings spacing closer to the bridge is wider than it is at the neck pickup.
