"Less than a year old"? I thought the SUB range was discontinued in 2006? Or did the Sterling version outlast the others?
only last year a shop in Denmark St. had 2 new unsold ones but they were asking for silly money based on the rarity of them. Only a fool would have bought one for £900 c'mon! -
Don't miss out this bass. Music Man Sub Sterling under £500 Bargain. These bass are really sought after and at this price you'd be mad not to. (I'd have it myself but my missus will have my balls in a vice if I did) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ernie-Ball-Music-Man...=item3cabf27954

Whoever told you that the silk wrapping may act somehow as a sound damper is talking out of his bath plug. Once the open string is resting "naked" between the bridge saddle and the nut slot, there is no amount of silk wrap that will make any difference to the sound. Silk wrapping is just used to give the outer wrap a final seal, but many manufacturers like D'Addario and Ernie Ball don't use them as they've realized they don't actually need them. -
When I was a kid in the 80's no such thing as a cool bass starter pack, have a look at this one for example http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAXVILLE-DEMON-ELECT...=item27b01ee452
Thanks for the extras dude, this could be the definitive thread on these basses for future buyers. How much of a difference to the tone have the upgraded electronics made? Judging by the recordings, I'm pretty happy with how it sounds now. I'm only interested in a superficial changes
Put it this way the modifications to the wiring and the pickups have rendered it very difficult for a purist to tell apart from a vintage Precision if he was to listen to both blindfolded. Main difference is the increase in range, the mids are more pronounced and the tone control is really progressive, you really do get a different tone at every point in the tone control from min to max. The sound of the Seymour Duncan is sublime.

Hi there dude, congratulation on your bass, I have bought the very same bass, (actually to be precise), I have bought all 3 of the Classic Vibe ones: the Jazz, the 50's Precision and this one in the same colour as yours, officially this is Fiesta Red, but I like to call it Salmon Pink, to me that is the colour in real life despite what it looks like in pics. I agree with everything you say about playablilty, sound, neck feel and action. But I am a restless so and so, and I have carried out some minor improvement modifications to all 3 of them. Having hanged around for most of my life with between bands, music workshops and repair gurus I have come to learn that the heart of the sound in a Fender electric bass (or any copy of it) comes not only from the wood but mainly the pickups, the wiring, the pots and even the capacitors. So the first thing I do, is open the control cavity and remove the squier pots, the wires and the pickup and I use period correct vintage cloth covered waxed wirings, I use CTS original Fender replacement 250k Audio pots, an original Switchkraft 1/4" input jack socket and a Sprague Orange Drop .047mfd 100volt capacitor. This whole kit is available for sale on ebay at the link below: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WIRING-KIT-FOR-FENDE...=item5191a8db89 see pics below: I have tried lots of pickups but if you really want to go for the vintage 60's sound there's none better than Seymour Duncan Vintage SPB-1 details below: http://www.seymourduncan.com/products/bass...pb1_vintage_fo/ application Vintage-correct pickup that's great for country, pop, blues, and classic rock. description A faithful reproduction of Leo Fender's 1957 dual coil pickup design. Same hand-fabricated forbon bobbins. Same plain enamel wire. Same hand ground, sand-cast magnets. Same great "warm 'n woody" tone. Comes with waxed cloth hookup cable and non-logo covers. Finally I was not a fan of the tort pickguard so I've sourced a faithful replacement as you can see in the pics below:
That's cos I started this thread quite a while ago, it got revived yesterday I think, so I doubt the stock that I originally tried is on the Gallery website anymore!? Si
Sorry I didn't realize how old the original post was... I must mark a day in my schedule to pay a visit to the Gallery. Eventually when my new Big Al 5 strings comes sometimes in July I will have to go and pick it up anyway. Waiting for a bass on order is one agonizing pain I tell ya.

Not a bad job, One never knows they are decals as it does look like the real thing. Well done. p.s.: I don't care much about your tea table tho
So where do I go? To the best place on Earth. BassChat!! This is one of my favourite new bands.. they are a newly formed Supergroup. Probably not well known yet as they are a pretty underground style, but I really would love to know what Bass Effect anybody would say the bass uses in parts of this song.. Im thinking some sort of OD but im not too sure. Wondering if I can get a really similar sound through my Sansamp Driver.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eTw57EBe-o heres a link.
Right amigo, here is a much better audible version from the ever popular Grooveshark http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/search/son...0and%20Glaciers Sadly it's not a lot better, this is a messy mix, if ever I've heard one, however from what I can make of it, it does sound like some sorta P-Bass tone control fully up and played through a few various effects but definately flanger / reverb are in there. good luck

nice reivew albeit one has to appreciate that these are personal views biased by your own preference and taste. One man's meat and all that.... p.s.: none of your links work in the first post. Thanks

Well you can boil and pickle your strings with alchool, meth and even vinegar to kingdom come but: a they'll only sound brighter for 10 minutes and b you cannot stop the ovalizing effect of the stretched core and the damage caused by the frets indentations. An ovalized string will not produce a correct sin wave and as a result the electromagnetic spectrum that your pickup is meant to translate in audible sounds, will not reproduce a perfectly tuned note, it'll always be flat, and your bass will gradually sound more and more out of tune as the strings get older. Think of your strings as your car tyres, once they are worn there's f/all you can do about it! (well you could have lorries tyres recoverd with new thread because the price justify it but with car tyres you're better off buying new ones) Buy your strings in bulk they are cheaper that way and buy them from this chap on ebay he is the cheaper in UK, I have searched high and low and I am yet to find someone that can beat his prices. I also can't hear bugger all bass, however in a small fraction of that song when the rest of the band is observing a very short STFU pause I could hear some kind of P bass with a bit of flanger, but for the rest, the youtube quality of it is bad and doesn't come through clearly.

I'll say it again: don't forget that when you use string through you are forced to buy long scale strings as you might end up with not enough slack to wrap the string around the farthest peg. Oh and the worst news is that not a lot of companies will offer your favourite strings in the long scale version.
Thats the problem...I cant find a 5 string around the £1300-1400 mark I really like....but I havent tested a Ray 5 properly yet.
When you do you will be pleased, I tell you. Try a nice double H one, 5 different sounds on a blade switch, inside coils, outside coils, both humbuckers and in / out series, pukka!

The most important thing that you must appreciate about 5 string basses, which is largely overlooked by the un-initiated, is a concept that only those who own them and play them "get it" and that is not that a 5 string bass just allows you to play 4 notes below the low E not at all, in fact you are right very seldom it is required for a band playing ordinary songs to play below that, however the beauty of a 5 strings bass and what makes them really really clever is that if you are playing up the neck, say half way between frets 7 to 10 and you need to hit a low F, you would need to jump all the way back to the 1st fret on the E string to get that, whereas with a "fiver" you will save time and hand travelling effor by simply hitting that F on the B strings on the 6th fret or a G on 8th fret and so forth. Essentially, once you have trained your hand/brain (and believe me it doesn't take long, a month or two max) to travel distances across the strings rather than longitudinally across the neck, you will find it a lot easier to play, saving energy in fast runs, which in the end it makes a hell of a lot of difference when you are playing a 12 songs set every night. So in conclusion whoever was the first person that invented the 5 strings bass didn't do it for the simple benefit of adding 4 lower notes but to make life easy for bass players who are having to deal with such a long neck facilitating a new approach to a wider range of notes within a shorter space. On a 4 string bass a 2 octave scale will have you chainging posision almost every 3 notes whereas you can do a whole 2 octave major scale on a 5 string bass with one position change only! Once I got that concept registered in my brain it has been difficult switching back to 4 strings and I know I am not alone as all other 5ers I know out there all share my same feelings. Oh and best ever 5 string necks are Stingrays, no doubt about, no flappy low b, tight as f*** and plenty percussive resonance to boot.
What a great looking collection! Just love them MM25's! That Jazz looks like something that could've been designed by Gary 'Cows Of Our Planet' Larson! (Just wondering if you meant to post three almost-identical pics (or am I missing something?). )
No it was meant to, I had a bad light issue so I tried 3 different camera settings, not sure which one is better. I have a crappy camera so I try my best.

There's 3 of them missing in this pic, 2 are in storage (PRS 4 / PRS 5) one is on order eta July 2010
see, im aleady confused, cause how do i see/wipe off the cross if ive stuck a decal over it?
Oh god! You draw the cross more or less like this: Once the decal is in place it will stick even if you leave some of the marker under it, just wipe off the excess.
-
And yes the answer is: you can get that sound on a Squier 50's Classic Vibe. Guaranteed.
Im a waiting a couple of sets also :-) ill post when i get em, although im impatient and hamfisted so expect wobblage
Right, do it like this. 1) Use a straight edge or a long ruler 2) Get yourself a white board marker (those you can wipe off with a soft cloth) and mark an accurate + cross over each dot marker 4) You now have a precise reference on which to lay every new decal, make sure you position them geometrically over the cross, stick 'em in place and wipe off the rest of the marker's lines. Bob's your uncle
Their customer service is EXCELLENT. I received mine within days & because I bought 3 sets he chucked in a free extra set free!
Would you be so kind as to show us a pic or two of the finished product on your bass? Thanks

I am thinking towards the roman numerals which are reminiscent of John Entwhistle's basses. I would put a set of those on a nice maple necked P
