cheers all, looks like something i'll have to put a little more thought into, thanks for all your pointers.

been searching through the posts about this but can't seem to find the info i need, i'm probably looking in the wrong place... i bought some schaller M4's to replace the cheap korean tuners in one of my basses but the holes in the headstock are too wide for a snug fit, so i checked other basses and its the same story. what is/is there a standard size for shaft width on a bass tuner? can someone explain to me how it works? i read on a post i found that i could use the schaller's and fill the gap around them with something but i'd rather not, i'd rather just get a different brand of good quality tuner. also the screw is in the wrong place on schallers (off to one side) compared to the ones i'm replacing (below), didn't realise it was gonna be this complicated!

i was gonna buy them! darn it, i was a little worried about filling the gaps left but looking at it i reckon it would look cool with the black plastic surrounds you get on some pickups (gibson etc) no idea where you'd get the right size thing though... hmmm

wow! i've been in virtually the same situation for what seems like forever, but in reality its way less time than you've been putting up with it (6 years or so). major pain in the ass isn't it?! me and my lead guitarist brother have now decided to forget the idea of getting a singer and just do what we can ourselves. which just leaves a drummer... funny what you say about it wouldn't be the same band without the other two, cuz i've always felt like that about our drummer (singers have come and gone) but now that i think about it, it makes sense to continue the band and get someone new cuz we were always the driving force behind it anyway and as good as our drummer was/is i'd have swapped him in a second for a little effort and enthusiasm! i vote replace them but keep the band name etc if you think its worth keeping hold of the reputation you've built over the years, chucking it all away for the sake of it not being the same when in fact it might be, or might be way better seems a real hassle. well thats the angle i'm trying this time anyways! good luck!

i always stayed clear of basses with out front markers until i actually played one and it was fine... made me realise i don't actually use them as much as i thought i did, think its just a habit get into when you 1st learn but its quite easy to get out of if. also got to thinking its probably better from an on stage point of view for me to not be stood with my head bowed trying to look at the front of the neck all the time, just a quick glance down evreytime i venture up to the dusty end of the fretboard just to make sure i'm sliding up to the right note. i say go for it!
