There's some version of Godwin's Law at work on this forum... in that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving The Beatles and/or getting paid to play approaches 1". Meanwhile, there's some actual music to be listened to right here. But don't mind me. As you were.
are they covers? can you confirm that they were indeed written and recorded by the same artist? if they are covers, does it make them any less relevant than the originals.... should we be paying to listen to them, or are they done for fun... you can't just come here and post stuff without context....
It's completely feasible and reasonable to cover a song whether or not the audience will know it. You can actually have an audience going 'That's a good song, who did you say wrote that?'.
you can but you can't make a set out of songs like that. no bar/club/venue is going to hire a band that only plays b-sides and demo's that no one has heard of. unless you are doing it for a bit of fun (where you can cover anything and should probably keep it in the basement ) the whole point IMO of being in a "covers" band is to entertain people, most likely for money. on the whole, that type of venue or crowd wants to hear what they know, not be educated about a demo that madonna recorded in her bathroom on a tape recorder.

i've finally got my studio rig up and running since the move, going to get my guitars etc from their current home and move them back to my house tonight, going to have a good crack at august to try and test my room out
I actually posed this question to set up and gather data for a future thread.
is it going to be about who is more relevant, covers or originals? then leading on to whether each should charge.... if so kill me now
4 pages for this! Wow!
buckle up, there's 19 or so more to go yet
doom-sludge-improv set
i don't know what that is, but i want to hear it.... and then cover it...

a band that plays songs made famous by someone else. a tribute band is the same but narrows down to a band, era or genre. normally in this country, such bands are set up with the intention of playing to make money from functions, weddings or pubs etc. i don't think it really matters what you call them, covers band, function band, bar band.... who cares?

Payment etiquette - weddings/functions
RockfordStone replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
i have no experience of this, but given you believe him to be flakey i would want to be asking for it before the performance.. you have to rely on people being sober enough to remember to pay you at the end of the evening -
new generations are better, i find older ones used to struggle with bass frequencies as they are aimed at guitars. your best bet is to go to a shop and try some out, some are better than others.

i dont know any but will watch this with interest as i have used them in the past. i bet skol will know some.

could be to do with your latency, if you try turning the buffer up does it improve it? usually, a fast computer can handle really low latencies, yours may not be able to keep up. it could be your soundcard, i used to have an m-audio soundcard and the midi link would struggle if the computer was struggling. i know thats a bit vague, but give your buffers a look and see if pushing them up improves them, will give you more latency, but give it a try.

Don't Get Spoiled By The Festival & Fair Season
RockfordStone replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
i don't think any band should do any gigs unpaid, especially if they have to provide their own PA etc. if you are doing festivals unpaid for a bit of fun, you'd be best keeping it in the basement. -
nice choice of picture, but i will have to sit this one out again as my gear is still in boxes and I have to decorate my office before i can get it all back out again. may have to force an entry out in august to test the space out.

my amp head is in a solid rack case, my cab has wheels and handles which is good. my cables, tools, pics etc are carried in a tool box which also doubles as a seat in an emergency and my pedal board has it's own case. have my load in and break downs to a fine art, 3 trips to the car each way.

that is an epic space!

i normally do something, even if it is just noodling to give my fingers a practice, I havent for the last month tho really, as i don't have a bass in my house currently
Try them out! Seriously. I think pretty much every DAW software offers a demo version or a free trial period. Make a list of those that you're interested in and demo them. It's the only way to make sure that you end up with a system that's right for you... because whenever this question gets asked, people always recommend whatever DAW they use themselves - and what works for them might not be the best solution for someone else. So get demo'ing. And let us know where you end up
this. give several a try and find what works best for you
It is indeed Reaper, which crashed almost fatally a week before I got everything moved in, making the transition a bit sadder than it should be. Fixed now. Not posting the reverse view, it's even less tidy the other side, mostly cases and instruments without cases, and piles of stuff. Good luck with your space RockfordStone, if it's anything like as much of a pain as mine has been to sort out, I thoroughly recommend taking up knitting instead.
luckily im not building a proper sound proofed studio, merely sorting out an existing room to become a man cave, but it will need some work to the electrics, new doors etc... hopefully should be easy enough..

i don't generally liked reliced instruments, that said, my friend had a lightly relic custom shop stratocaster and it really was stunning. i wouldn't buy one, but each to their own
Now that's a music room! Love it. Makes me want to go rummaging... Good to see that R2D2 has found a new home too. PS: what software are you running on those monitors? Looks like an old tracker, or something.
that's reaper i think... or cubase... i should be able to start work on my new space after this weekend.... fingers crossed
Reaper is good too, but personally, I really hate how it looks. The GUI isn't particularly user friendly and I really don't like the way FX application works.
i agree, it does look a bit hideous, but i find it helpful. the fact you dont rely on fancy graphics for plugins means you really have to use your ears reather than swtiching a graphical knob to a certain position.
-
another recommendation for reaper from me. i left cubase and moved to reaper and i find it simply flawless in performance. it isn't the prettiest interface, but even a home license is cheap and it is updated regularly to apply fixes. covers everything you need and works brilliantly with W10

Switching from Cubase to Logic - any experiences.
I don't mind relearning if at the end of the path there is a pot of gold!
that's partly my point, no one DAW will give you results better than the others. regardless of what DAW you chose to go with, the result will be the same, it will just be the work flow you use to get there. i would advise trying a couple of free trials and see what feels easier to use, and don't totally discount the likes of reaper, they are incredibly powerful for what they are. the software itself won't instantly make your results better as they are basically the same, but if you get on with the interface and flow, that is what will improve you, so try a couple of feel which works easiest for you. -

i switched from cubase to reaper a couple of years back. my advice would be unless you have a need to, don't do it, as you have to relearn a new software which can be infuriating. if you are embedded in cubase, changing can be more of a pain than a help. as with any DAW, there a pros and cons to each, but they basically do the same thing and produce the same quality output, it's mainly down to the user skills and preference of how your workflow goes. i'm assuming you are using a mac? my understanding is that logic is no longer available or supported on windows.
