ive started using them over strap lockers, cheaper and just as effective

unless you are short of money to be a new body part don't part with it. you can make allowances elsewhere but you can never replace an instrument. take all your light bulbs out and live by candlelight alone, but don't sell the bass

Alternative composition challenge idea
I can't see why you'd have to pester people. It appears that there is little interest in this idea - if you choose to go ahead with it anyway & it proves unpopular then why can't it just be allowed to die a natural death?
agree, i don't see any harm in throwing it up there, if it doesnt gather traction it will just die on it's own. -
Secondly, will this be sufficiently interesting for people to want to listen to? A selection of random baselines arguably has less appeal than a collection of compositions - and we already struggle to get people interested in those.
this is to me one of the key elements. being honest, even though i consider myself fairly active in regard the composition challenge sometimes i just can't listen to some of the tracks posted. This is by no means a reflection on the skills of the player or the composition but some styles and genres are just not pleasing to my ear. in all honesty i have no interest in listening to a bunch of riffs or lines in isolation. i know that sounds harsh, but just casting an honest opinion -
Alternative composition challenge idea

so basically you mean a simple post that works like this A - Hey guys, i wrote a riff, what do you think? B - yeah i like it, you should make a whole song A - thanks man I will C - hey heres mine. a sharing of ideas rather than competing against each other? -
i must admit the young bands looking for experience and people who "want to take it all the way" make me laugh, mainly because we were all like that once. i hate that "im 43, but im a young 43".... just say you are 43 its not like it's a crime. i dont respond to people like that. i find even when you put ages up you still get people apply who are outside them. i don't advertise anymore.........

Alternative composition challenge idea
I like this idea! It's a good compromise between making it super-easy for people to have a go and tackling some of the pitfalls of running it as a 'challenge'. So this sounds like the most viable way forward to me. Any other thoughts?
i think its the most sensible option, if part of the reasoning is time available, faffing around to meet some kind of standard for a challenge won't appeal, it just needs to be "hey look i have this riff on sound cloud, check it out" boom, done -

with all due respect... if you are going to ask about an idea, you need to expect some negative feedback... effectively what you are suggesting is people record their noodling and playing it to other people, which doesn't need to be a challenge imo. i wouldn't record a short riff idea for a challenge, and i'll be honest i couldn't sit through a whole thread just listening to a riff and on that basis i wouldn't even consider voting. given we have established some solo bass sounds like "aimless noodling" i don't think everyone would be interested in listening. I get what you are trying to achieve, but surely it could be contained to a single thread like "share my doodle" and people share their doodles etc and people can comment if they wish. don't think it needs to be a challenge, especially when there is nothing to judge it against. as mentioned, bass only pieces have been contributed in the past and there is no barrier to the composition challenge as it stands, you could record a noddle and a riff and enter that if you so wished, it doesnt have to be in the form of a full song with all the other elements -
i would concentrate on writing and recording my own music and releasing that. if i couldn't do that or gig then i would sell up and do photography instead. i haven't gigged for 18 months for various reasons so i will probably give it one more year before giving up on the idea of gigging

i've left forums before after the topics and arguments become to samey and tedious. I wont be going anywhere yet, but i could leave the forum and not let it bother me
NOOOO, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE CUSTARD!!!
always this, why would you have a hot apple pie and put cold ice cream with it?
I must admit that what I have so far doesn’t ‘sound’ much like the photos.
mine never does, the photo inspires something which spins off to it's own entity, i've never written one about the photo, more the emotion it evokes

i do everything i can to avoid a ding, but once it gets dinged i don't care and let it just accumulate wear

i do like the 1975, you can a lot of their influence comes from the 80's. didn't ever really listen to PG, but always loved sledgehammer
-
i have only bought one thing in the past 18 months and don't actually want anythihng, so i suppose i have a dry gas field
-
i couldn't tell you what they mean, but reading the thread title i thought we were in for another "Jaco's aimless noodling" style thread

i stopped playing completely about this time last year after a 10 year straight run of doing nothing but playing bass and working with bands. i found i just got sick of it, i didn't enjoy playing bass at all, i was doing it to maintain bands, and then when they stopped working i just jacked it all in. sometimes you can just get bored of it, and when it becomes a chore then it's worth putting it down. that said, one of my old bands is getting together tonight for a jam which im looking forward to, but my drive is more about making music rather than playing bass these days

must say i was totally shocked by this a true artist and innovator. RIP Mr Bowie
It's a bit early for that kind of defeatist attitude.
it is, but we are trying to sell the house so have had to pack away a lot of my gear so dont have all that much to get inspired with
My band mates are a lot more generous than me when comes to letting anyone play my bass at my gig. I have a simple standard response; "No" Works like a charm every time. Blue
that's my response, someone asked if they could borrow mine after snapping their headstock off in their soundcheck... people take liberties. i'll be honest, if some randomer rocked up on stage with one of my bands and tried to be part of it i'd tell them to get off and stop playing if they persisted
