Underated - band and bass player?
RockfordStone replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
alter bridge's brian marshall i think is underrated, as with creed beforehand, he and the drummer really have a tight rhythm section to allow mark tremonti to do his guitar hero thing. by no means flash, but he is a really solid player imo -
sorry i didn't get involved this month, been finishing off my EP
-
i use superior drummer, and have a template where i have them routed out of the programme and mix in the daw... dunno why just feels like a logical work flow
You could claim the contract was signed under duress.
I would think this, if he was hounding you to sign a contract with unreasonable time scales and threats about future work etc, i think coercion can be a case for making the contract invalid and unreasonable.. proving it may be the issue tho.

i am looking to get a tube preamp/di to add into my existing recording system, the intention being to give my vocals, bass and guitar a little tube saturation and warmth rather than add it in with VST after. the options i am looking it currently are Presonus TubePre ART Tube MP Studio V3 both are of similar sort of price, i am leaning towards the the presonus on the basis that there is more control over the drive on the valve where as the ART has presets. the other option is i spend a bit more and get the ART Tube MP/C, which acts as a preamp and compressor which is tempting. If you have any suggestions or have used any of these let me know cheers
Ours has a 1X12" Marshall valve job, sounds really great. It's 40W so can be bloody loud, but has a half-power option - that works really well. He's pretty cool about keeping the volume down - I'm guessing he's not compensating for anything.
my guy doesnt need to play loud, he's an incredible lead player so doesnt need volume to hide his playing i think at times guitarists use volume to hide their playing
-
my guitarist uses a fender amp, not a twin but a valve job none the less. he plays his loud, but not so loud that the drummer and i can't hear ourselves. he appreciates that some of the venues we play are not large enough to crank his amp, and as such he has an array of pedals to accentuate the tones and has the amp set up to work with them to get the best out of both at a low volume level. it is true that the sound breaks up the louder they get, but that is best saved for recording in a treated studio rather than a pub imo. if he has to play loud to get his tone, then he is obviously lacking somewhere and needs to learn more about his gear

i've loved this series, really interesting

i always gig with a spare, didn't used to, but rocked up to a long distance gig and found my bass was broken. managed to bodge it back to life before we got on stage, but since then i have taken a second just to be on the safe side
-
as a vocalist i know where my voice is, if i am going struggle at a gig etc. we are an originals band, so our sets are not usually more than 45 minutes, so must times i can punch through it but just holding back on big notes etc. i spend time warming up my vocals now more than i used to, i also have a supply of lockets, vocalzone etc with me and that serves me well. i also make sure we don't practice the night or 2 nights before. i have done some shows when i have been coming up to being ill which ive pushed through, but if i am ill and the voice just won't work i don't risk it... sometimes voices just go, its the same as a volumn pot can go on your bass or your amp can just go with no warning. if it is because of illness, then not a lot can be done short of having a dep, if its that he cant do 2 gigs in a weekend then that is more vocal conditioning that he needs to work on

Combining Bass Guitar + Computer Output Into Headphones
RockfordStone replied to André Boström's topic in Recording
a usb interface may help, mine allows me to set a level between what comes out of the computer and what is coming directly from the guitar/input -
Don't iPads come with garageband ?
this, ive heard of artists who have done whole albums on garageband
This pretty much. I started on a MacBook Pro then moved to Windows. I've used Windows for years and used a Mac at work for 4 and a half years before requesting a Windows laptop. Don't listen to the arguments that Macs are more stable than Windows. That might have been true back in the days of Windows 95/98 but both Mac and PC are fine now (incidentally, I had more problems with OSX crashing and having compatibility problems than Windows 7). My PC doubles up as my gaming PC and photo PC (triples up...) so it's got 16GB of fast gaming RAM, an overclocked and super-cooled i7 CPU, silent case with nice large fans and an SSD. I built my own PC so know how to trouble-shoot which puts me at an advantage for using PCs. Macs are pretty much sealed boxes. If my motherboard fails in my PC I can swap it out and replace it and keep my RAM and CPU. If that happens in a Mac you just talk to someone at Apple who'll tell you in your language that the whole thing is buggered and you should buy a new one. Kidding of course, they'll likely just replace the motherboard if it's under warranty. It really does depend on your comfort level with either tinkering or buying a sealed box you can't adjust. So anyway, pick which ever operating system you're used to and it will be plainer sailing than switching to another. Both systems are as easy to use as each other in my experience but switching from one to the other is not.
this is pretty much the same as me, i built mine as a gaming pc when i first met my wife (some 7 years ago) and its power has allowed it to handle everything and any problems i have been able to troubleshoot and rectify easily... it is due a rebuild so maybe i'll as the PC or Mac question in a couple of months..... i would always go with what you are comfortable with, either will do what you want if you get the right spec, but don't go trying to learn a windows system if you are a mac man and vice versa

would a bad drummer make you quit a band? I just did :-(
RockfordStone replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
depends on the band, if the band is good and it's just the drummer than i'd lose the drummer. if the drummer was sh*t and band not much better i'd go my last drummer struggled with his timing but was generally on, but the style of music we played we could cover for it. i lost it when we had a recording session and he rocked up with a different kit set up and different fills.... a day of my time and money wasted that was... he went not long after -
much of a muchness really, i think most interfaces work on both, as does most software (apart from pro-tools) i've always used a pc for my recording and never had an issue, did use a mac on a recording course i did, and did exactly the same thing but i didn't click with it. i build my own computers anyway, so for me it cheaper to build a daftly powerful pc than it is to build a mac. one thing i will say is don't buy a cheap laptop. a lot of supermarket level are well priced for usual day to day use, but even simple recording can be demanding on the system. check the specs of any possible software you want to use and interfaces etc, and buy a laptop that is above these specs if possible. hope that helps

Responses to turning down being in someone's band.
RockfordStone replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
i find the whole thing is a bit awkward.. i've had the arsey responses from people when i have turned them down and on the other hand, ive also had people respond in an arsey way when i've approached them with them saying i'm not what they are after..... before even talking to me or auditioning me... its all very odd -
my interpretation is that he means C G C F, tuned down a full step then dropping the bottom string
-
i use ernie ball regular slinkies on mine, and i have had them downtuned to drop c without much problem the power slinky 55-110 will do the trck
-
ive got a set of studiospares drum mics, i've found them to be rugged enough and they sound pretty decent for the cost. if i had more money id most likely buy an array of different mics for seperate drums, but for a budget kit, i can't complain about the studio spares ones

November Composition Challenge - GET RECORDING!
RockfordStone replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
It amazes me sometimes how something just kicks in and gives me an idea , I don't for one minute suggest it is a good idea , but it's something to work on , and besides , with this challenge I find the journey to be as much of the fun as the destination
some months work for me, others not so much and i hate entering ideas that i am not happy with. i've tried the idea of sitting and chipping away at ideas that are not working, but often this leaves me frustrated and wastes my time. now i go with the mantra of if it hits me straight off ill do it, if not i don't. which is why i don't enter every month anymore. -
Everyones a bit quick off the mark this month I have the bones down , I have even recorded a vocal , but again , I am really hoping to get a visit from someone who can sing to give it a proper shot , even Lurksalittle winced at the suggestion she could contribute , so while it is a little bit poop , it just might have to suffice , I will hang on in hope though . I will listen to the others when I am uploaded , looking forward to it .
at least you have the bare bones, i have nothing -
Use them all the time. This time however they have screwed my order up. Hopefully I can get it sorted monday

Bar Gigging, Why Do We Love It? / Why do We Hate It?
RockfordStone replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
i will play anywhere within reason, some of the best gigs i've done have been in sweaty pub backrooms. i do not play to make money, but i do play to play music. it is my hobby, my passion, i would expect to make money out of my photography hobby, as such i don't expect it from music.. i just like getting out of my bedroom to show people. i write songs, and i like to play them to people, and that's why i do it... of course id love to play to 5,000 people, but 5 people in a pub is fine by me too. -
