YOUR ideas for the Recording forum - WHAT'S HAPPENING...
RockfordStone replied to Skol303's topic in Recording
we should have a thread that allows people to work together ie, collaborate on tracks together, and mix each others music (but not in the form of competition) id be up for doing collaborationg projects with people or mixing their stuff for them -
i have others, but this one is my favourite one

Thought i would post this here, as i know there are a lot of people here who are new to home recording. I discovered this podcast a year or so ago, and it really is a useful resource. It discusses all aspects of home recording and is really informative, in a relaxed and easy going way. it invites comments and questions from listeners and has a long list of special guests talking about various aspects of the home studio and producing industry. I really would urge everyone here to have a listen, its entertaining, informative and not a waste of time. check it out at http://www.homerecordingshow.com/

Something Old & Something New - Your Recordings.
RockfordStone replied to xilddx's topic in Share Your Music
this is my offering, it was the first song i ever wrote and attempted to record. Summer Days i wrote in 2007 to get over a break up, and recorded it direct with an old squier strat (which i still have) and an old zoom multi track deck (which i still have), all very very rough so this year i recorded Summer Days 2013 in a couple of hours earlier this year, and whilst its not perfect, it gives the song more body and the feel i intended when i wrote it, but was never able until recently to perform. really shows how far i have come as a musician and engineer i think. thought you guys may like it -
but the process by which I go about writing is nowhere near as spontaneous - it's much more 'engineered'.
my song writing is spontaneous, that is why my entering is sporadic... if the picture grabs me i can write and record a song in a matter of a few hours.... if i can't get in that mindset i don't bother generally

also, maybe if members are working on recording projects, they can have running posts about what they are doing, how they are doing it, if they had a clever idea on a mix that worked being able to share it... would give a flavour of how other people record and mix etc. id certainly be up for sharing my mix secrets etc as i use them on projects also happy to moderate/contribute in anyway if you need it paul -

sticky posts for podcasts, book and website recommendations... theres loads of information on how to do things out there, so a single place to find them would be good, similar to the free plugins one -
sorry i missed this one guys, been through some sh*t with work, so ive ended up changing jobs, hopefully i should return in the next one or the one after
-
the advice ive always had is that you should restring before recording. from experience it really can make a difference on record
Quick tip: try searching on SoundCloud (or a similar site) for singers in whatever genre you're interested in: http://www.soundcloud.com/ You'll have to wade through some dross, but there are plenty of diamonds to be found if you're patient - it's worked for me!
OI!!!! i may not be amazing, but i am not dross!

I've had stuff broken, and stuff nicked, as well as seeing some awful damage done to other peoples gear (broken guitars, damaged cymbals amps etc). In most cases, it ends up being the owner who is left with the hassle and bill. As a result i avoid lending my gear as much as possible, i also avoid borrowing if i can. i would rather take all of my gear and take it on and off stage than risk breaking someone elses. If someone i trust wants to borrow it fine, and if a bass player has made a genuine effort to arrange with me before hand i often do, but if someone shows up and expects to use my rig on the night they are told about the perfectly good DI
Good idea, Rob. But I think September's image has already been chosen by Garry, who won in July. Hence I think it's best to 'reset' the competition using Garry's choice - otherwise it's going to get confusing with the photos running out of sync
ahh didn't realise that, sorry put septembers up then, i mgiht enter that one
Sorry! Hectic! I'll try and put voting up at the end of the month and we'll overlap with next months if that's cool with everyone?
i think.... as this is a new year... rather than the winner of this combination offer picking the next picture, you should pick one rick.
That's quite a good point. PCs are like the Transit vans of computers. Broken? Open it up, rip out the issue, throw in a new part, start it up again. Macs are more like F1 cars. It breaks, it goes onto life support.
this is my big issue with macs, i mean they are great if you just wanna plug in and go, but im very hands on, and i wouldn't want to have to take in a computer to be fixed. it does all come down to personal preference, they both do the same things, just in different ways
-
i prefer pc's over macs, ive used both and i find pc's easier. plus i build my own so i know how to fix it if it goes wrong, its all down to personal preference i guess

its doable, i was in a band that got together, wrote a set, recorded a demo and gigged in the space of 9 weeks, but we all had the same motivation. to me, it sounds like a mess from the start, too many "members" not being able to practice, and as for travelling 4 round hours for practices with the sax player? f*** that. Maybe the band leader is trying to pull everyone towards one goal, which is not a bad thing, but if you can't get all the members together all the time, its going to be disaster
-
i wont be getting involved, too much other sh*t to deal with at the moment
If they agree to do the install on a particular day and then fail to show up you can put in a claim for loss of earnings. That's what we did when they messed us around at work. You don't need to get any lawyers involved - just write to their complaints department (email is good as it provides a record of the correspondence) and ask for compensation. They'll dilly-dally and try to avoid paying you anything, but if you persist they'll most likely cough up eventually. At least they did in our case. You won't get anything near an equivalent day's pay, but you'll get something. Worth bearing in mind anyway mate.
we did complain, they offered us a tenner of our first bill....
