i read bb kings auto biography, found that to be rather honest and interesting, the same with eric clapton's ozzy osbournes is great, as is slash's, but given the amount of consumed drugs its hard to tell whats real and what isn't, but good reads none the less

Behringer is crap! - is it? do we give labels too much weight?
RockfordStone replied to mcnach's topic in General Discussion
ive got a behringer head that i paid 170 quid for new, 450 watts, and used to do me good.. it started to catch fire once, and it still works. if i stand it up against my 1000 ampeg head, of course it isn't going to sound much cop, but ive used it for gigs, and through my ampeg cab its a perfectly useable amp. behringer get a bad rep for being cheap, but as with any manufacturer, you get a sh*t product or a good product -
i use wordpres, i have a blog on it, and a band "website" i get the feeling that its very much based at being a fancy blog than a website, might give bandzoogle a look for the band stuff

i'm not going to get one in this month, i just can't get inspired this month so im gonna not enter rather than enter a load of old pap i'm not happy with

+1 for overlcockers, i got all the componants for my last pc build there, the processor and mother board bundles are always pretty decently priced imo, and saves hassle trying to find the ones that pair up

RockfordStone replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
+1 to the planet waves cable ties, ive got a load of these and they do a great job, i do have some cables that just wont coil properly tho, its rather irritating -
i don't gig at the moment mainly because ive been let down by people, and as such im a lot more picky about who i get in bands with

"Hey man, can you send me the tabs of this?"
RockfordStone replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
i tend to work out by ear mainly, and glance at tab to give me an idea of where to go at times, but i have never asked anyone to tab something for me... thats just plan lazy -
i gig for the pure love of playing music regardless of if i get paid or not, its ok playing at home, but for me the buzz is being on stage. yes it costs money, but the way i look at it, is if i wanted to watch a film i like at the cinema, id have to pay for it, if i wanted to race a car round a track for a day, id have to pay for it. its nice being paid, but thats what my day job is for
I'm a total tube amp geek, and I previously tried (and hated) the Line6 pod, but the latest PC based emulations are much much better IMO - GuitarRig, Amplitube, even the stuff built into Cubase is absolutely fine for many applications. I still mic up an amp where possible, but for home (not studio/stage) recording, I'm not sure there's much point in annoying the neighbours anymore, certainly once in a mix, you'll not notice a lot of difference, particularly if the room, amp, mics or mic positioning is not 100%. I suspect for what the OP wants to achieve, they would probably be better spending their money on a good low-latency interface with a couple of reasonable mic-pre's, and a couple of good amp plugins, and one reasonable mic for vocals. Then they could focus on what I assume is important to them, ie the music/compositions, although given the content of this thread I'm not clear if they're aiming to compose some music or learn to engineer recordings - either is a worthy goal, but IME doing both at the same time is difficult, focussing too much on the technology normally kills any musical creativity for me.
i use my pod and podfarm to cover a multitude of sins, i don't have the luxury of being a guitarist, so i don't have amps etc, so i use emulators as my replacement. you can if you spend the time and effort get some passable tones. they are by no means the warmth and tone you can get from a real tube amp, but they can be ok if you slam them with enough plug ins
-
ive grown to hate my line 6 pod, way too fuzzy for me
-
if you can't stretch to the apogee, something like a tascam us-144mII are decent value for the money. i have used one for a couple of years, and have no massive problems, but as with everything, the better the interface, the better the sound. if the guitar amp has a line out then yes, you would do the same, if not you would just mic it

i am spending my time working and practicing with the hope of one day being able to shift career into music. not as a bass player tho. i have no real interested in being a professional musician anymore, im more interested in working as a sound engineer or producer than a musician
-
i went to the first one, and the slap bass drove me insane. i sat down to try a bass out and got funny looks because i didn't play slap bass. kudos to the people who can slap well, but its not the only way to play bass, and those who atempt and are not good at it are just noise makers
Rockford Stone: Really like the organ during the intro. Nice vocal as always from you mate - I especially like the chorus, very 'singalong' and had me joining in by the end. The guitar(s) and bass could do with being a bit louder and more forward in the mix. It sounds like you may have rolled off a wee bit too much of the low end - I really wanted the guitars to bowl me over! - but that's a minor criticism of what is a very catchy anthem.
Cheers man, in all honesty i spent no time at all on this track. i did it as part of my one song a week thing, so didnt really concentrate on the mix, the whole thing was very much thrown together in a short period of time
Oh, i'm not looking for a highly polished article. I'm not trying to get it on Radio 1. I already have an interface. It only has 1 XLR input though. I was thinking of getting a little Behringer xenyx mixer. They are a USB mixer.
think about how many things you are recording. i would suggest a better interface with less inputs, rather than a cheap one because it has more inputs, remember the interface will affect your sound if it is sh*t you can't go wrong with line 6 stuff. personally i'm a big fan of tascam stuff, but line 6 stuff is hella handy
-
VST's are the effects within the software, eg the compressors, eq etc
-
then your best bet is to get usb interface and a mic, and do that you can DI the bass into the interface, and then line the guitar in and use computer processing to get the guitar tones. i would suggest this http://www.studiospares.com/audio-interfaces/line-6-pod-studio-ux1-audio-interface/invt/301220/?VBMST=line%206%20ux1 as it comes with pod farm, which is pretty good for guitar tones, i use it for my recordings http://www.studiospares.com/mics-condenser/studiospares-s990-condenser-mic-cardioid/invt/449120/ something like this will do for acoustic guitars, and then vocals if you want to add after. you can make an ep using those pieces. shop around and you can get them in your budget. unless you are experienced in recording and mixing etc, keep it simple and the results will be worth it. all my bass chat entries are done on a 2 channel tascam and a single condensor mic for vocal, if i was to spend proper time on recording and mixing them then i could make a sellable ep from them. also remember, you are working within constraints, so the recordings may not sound like the most polished articles in the world, but don't let it get you down, take your time and the results will come
-
ok lets keep it simple you say an ep, what are the songs to consist of? we can throw loads and loads of ideas around, but to know what you need, you need to know yourself what you are planning on. i assume acoustic guitar, bass and vocal at this stage?
-
it will have an effect, maybe not a massive amount, but it will do. you have also said that you're room isn't carpeted? that two will have a knock on effect. basically you'll have reflection city going on, unless you can get a better room. but as said before, keep it simple, DI the bass. there are plenty of bits of software which can allow you to add cab and speaker sound in using impulses. they are by no means the perfect article, but if you can get good ones they do add a nice colour to the tone.
-
I'm not just doing it to learn though, i'm doing it to record an EP too. Ok, maybe i'll ditch the 2 amp idea.
this is my point, i'm also recording an ep, and the only thing i am using a mic for is singing with home recording you don't need an elaborate set up. the more mics you have and the more connections, the harder it is to get the right tone on the input and the harder it is to mix it all. you also have to consider, unless the room is treated, as you are saying it isn't, then miccing amps is going to be more of a hassle than success, you will get best results from running direct. i'm not meaning to sound argumentative, but if you want to record an ep you have to see the fun in it, over complicating will strip the fun out sometimes keeping it simple is the best option

yay i got a vote
