i thought this may be a usefull topic. over the years ive been recording ive accumulated various different books, podcasts etc that have really helped me, and im sure overs have also, so it could be an idea to share them. one i am currently liking very much is the home recording show, a weekly podcast which goes into various different ideas and practices, and allows for open feedback from listeners. it can be found at http://www.homerecordingshow.com/

Some really strong contenders already this month. Its really great to see everyone getting involved and grasping the concept of this idea. I hope that it continues like this cos its helped me find my passion for song writing again

I took my first idea and then threw it away... My new one has lyrics and melody and chord progresson so i just need to bulk it out

Tuning, It helps you breath more easily!
RockfordStone replied to baseline9's topic in General Discussion
mark tremonti uses some interesting ones for his guitar which work with drop tuned bass. i think he tunes his guitar something like CGCGCC (i could be wrong check it out on google)..... i copied it once and christ it didn't half make for an epic guitar sound -
my songs are normally somewher around 5 and half minutes, so im glad we can stretch to 6
-
i have no problem with the length, if you want to shorten it, the best option is to cut the bit that you like least
-
for a live room session these sound really good, id agree with skol about them sounding a bit muddy, and the drums sound a little bit distant, but as i say, for a live room sesson, they have come out not bad at all. liking the songs themselves too

What else do I need ( if anything)?
RockfordStone replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Recording
Good question, but it depends solely on what you yourself need. From the list you mention the only basic ingredient that I'd recommend investing in is an audio interface - I use a Tascam, but the Focusrite Saffire is often recommended as being great value for money. The advantage of an interface is that it offers much better processing power than your computer's built-in sound card. It also enables you to be more 'hands on' when recording, which I find very useful. Other than that, I'd suggest a good pair of suitably flat, non-attenuating headphones (i.e. cans that don't colour the sound too much). I use a pair of AKGs and have got very used to them over the years... but again, there are a bunch of other options on the market. The rest of the stuff you mention - mixer, pads, controllers, etc - aren't what I'd call essential items, but are nice to have if you want to burn some ca$h (and can be useful in speeding up your workflow). I personally use a computer, an interface, a MIDI keyboard, a pair of headphones, some stringed things and that's it. Spend wisely and have fun! Or foolishly and potentially have more fun. Whatever
i work fairly similar to this i have 2 different interfaces into a computer, 1 is a 16 input one which i use for bands, and one is a 2 port which i use for home use. this then runs into my computer and cubase, then out to a good set of monitors or my good set of headphones. its very much subjective and down to choice, like bass playing, you really only need a guitar, lead and amp. everything else is your own desire -
ok so i did this earlier this year for my "band" which is now basically just me... i posted them up before but since there seems to be a lot of love for home made recordings at the moment i thought id drag them back out again. www.reverbnation.com/papersoldiersuk they are a bit sketchy as they were each recorded over 3 seperate occasions with different musicians, so i pulled the best takes together and mixed them into releasable songs. i did most of the song writing and and did all the vocals and the recording and the production, so im thinking of carrying the project on solo and releasing some new material... what do you think? if anyone wants a copy of this ep, if you pm me ill send out a link to where you can download it for free

RockfordStone replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in Recording
it depends what level you are looking to go to. simple terms you need an interface to plug your guitar, bass, mic into and a programme which you have in garage band. interfaces you can quite cheaply, you don't neccesarily need a mixer, i do all mine in software rather than on a desk/mixer a good set of monitors won't go a miss if you can afford some -
warwick thumb bass? standard or a faulty string
RockfordStone replied to RockfordStone's topic in General Discussion
i filed the anchor point down a bit, fits like a glove now. might invest in a new bridge at some point in the future, but its sorted for now. cheers doddy for the heads up -
Yea its a bit of a squeeze in there but some careful adjustments and the guitarist not minding being smacked with my headstock every so often and its all good! Always a great crowd in the Red Lion, thankfully weve another couple booked there for next year.
ive played the red lion i believe, is that the one where they kind of set you up in the middle of the floor? was a good crowd there that night if it is

warwick thumb bass? standard or a faulty string
RockfordStone replied to RockfordStone's topic in General Discussion
brilliant, its nice to see that i'm not alone looks like i'll be getting the file out tonight then, thanks guys -
so i just restrung my warwick thumb 5 string for the first time since owning it. all was going fine until i came to the 5th string. i was installing 0.130 gauge string, which as far as i'm concerned is fairly standard and not too adventurous, and whilst the nut is wide enough, and bridge saddle is wide enough, the binding at the ball end of the string is too wide to hook in. i'm inclined to believe that i could just have a dodgy string which hasn't been wound correctly, but i just wanted to ask the collective brain of bass chat if warwick basses are suited to a specific string gauge. cheers

i use ernie ball nickel rounds. used them for years and i like the way they feel and play, and they do have a decent life to them which helps, currently trialling a set of picato on my precision so we'll see how they go
Brave move but it's worked. I'm always a stickler for not being able to cut out sections I've worked on, even if they don't always fit. Something I need to learn! Yeah, I'm thinking mine's going to need some guitar lines too. Trouble is I can barely play those tiny, 6-string bass replica thingies so I'm going to need to keep it nice and simple. Trying to learn some chords at the moment before I start recording anything...
i use powerchords mainly, or my own variation of a chord lol i'm brewing an idea in my head, but it always comes out metal.... grrr

im going to start working on mine tonight, need to get some nice guitar tones
