1. gigs for me up to an hour each way, hour and a half if the gig is worth it. i wouldn't travel an hour for a 2 or 3 hour practice tho, unless the band was really something special
2.
Wahey! Is that the first time this year??
it has been a while... just had to be done
3. i couldn't tell you all the differences, but i do know this drummer is at the wrong gig...
4. I've got Feeder - October 14th, Nottingham 3 Doors Down - 6th November, London seen feeder many times, but not for a number of years, 3 doors down i've loved for many many years but never got to see them.
5.
I recently bought a Sandblasted Precision, the only new Fender I've ever bought. I went to look at it simply it was so pretty. I bought it because it sounds so good.
i have a sandblasted jazz and can echo this, they look pretty and play beautifully. not sure they are still making them tho, think they were a limited run? i also picked up a japanese ltd edition fender aerodyne jazz a few years back and that is a bloody fantastic bass.
6.
Nowadays it's not really the job of the 'promoter' (despite the name) to promote the band to the fans. The music business has nothing to do with music. It's all about self promotion and that's your job, not the promoter. .
to an extent i agree, to another i disagree of course a band has to promote itself, that goes without saying, and with social media it is made a lot easier almost to the point bands have become lazy with promotion. but if you are to believe some of the comments on another thread (you know which one i mean), bands are being exploited by promoters when they agree to play for free with the promoter taking the money. if that's the case, surely it's in the promoters best interest to promote the show to get people in so they can make money off the bands they are exploiting by getting them to play for free?
7. we played the shed once, came up from cambridge. we were the main band the only people there was the bar guy, and a couple of guys from the band we agreed to kit share with (they only stayed cos of the kit share). typically the "promoter" was nowhere to be seen. it's a good venue. so we just used it to practice our show in the end.
8. when i was in year 6 i didn't want to be a musician, in 6th form i didn't want to be one. i only became a muso when i was at university when i met other people who were. sometimes it takes longer, but they will find the true path
9. if you have a PA advanced enough to support a good front of house sound and well balanced monitoring, then the need for an amp on stage is purely preference and for image really. a lot of top bands now don't go with the traditional amps rig, they may have specific heads run through a PA set up but the whole wall of cabs thing is an idea that is long gone
10. i was a musician when i met my wife, and she knows it comes as part of the deal. as long as they are in their own place and not cluttering the house she is fine. she does say i have too many, but then when i say "im selling x guitar" she is like no you can't sell that one....
11. when i woke up one morning and all i wanted to do was play music and when i would put playing music ahead of everything and everyone (yes i lost GFs to music). even tho bass is my main instrument, i have never considered myself to be a bassist/bass player, as my drive is to create music by whatever means necessary.
12. i tried to do something for this at the weekend, but some sh*t happened and i had no spark of inspiration.. shame, was a good picture
13. once for me, when i was new and changed strings for the first time, tuned too far with cheap strings and piiiing
14. normally we always split ours equally. most of the places we practiced knew us well enough that if a person was missing they would just make sure that person covered it the week later. unless of course there is something serious that's happened then the other members would just split it.
15. i haven't even started yet... oops
16. hobbyist/wannabe here. my day job pays for my musical endeavours, but if i had the chance to be a pro, i would be in a position to follow it up
17. to me this sounds like an exam piece you would learn for grading. i can appreciate his skill, but it just doesn't connect with me.
18. sadly, its practice practice and a large chunk of confidence. i generally front bands now whilst playing bass... its hard, often you have to comprise one to make sure the other isn't suffering, but it takes practice to work out in which order you have to work. it is hard work, but it is rewarding as hell once you get it working.
19.
They all seem to be 'start ups'.
on that basis option 2 are highly unlikely to see their first gig. option 4 sound like they should keep it in the basement and not risk devaluing the music so that options 1 and 3 are not playing for sh*t money. 5 are probably not going to make enough money to live in so would be a "hobby" band, and really should follow the route of band 4. given that several of these bands are covers bands, do we need to define what is a cover or tribute? that's where this thread is going right?.......
20. it floats my boat, maybe i'll write "Empire City pt II" with some rapcore or something
21.
Yes, but it's only a few songs he's been given. Maybe ask to see the whole set list, that might even give an indication to whether they're a serious band anywhere near gigging.
i'm assuming that the OP's talking about an originals band, and that a bunch means about 4 or so songs, which on the standard originals circuit would be a large chunk of a gig set. in my experience, bands send out their best songs to people they want to join the band, and if doesnt think they are great then anything else may be below the OP's expectations too.
22.
Provisionally accept the second one and do the gig. Learn the few songs for the first one and audition. There's no guarantee they'll offer you the gig and there's no guarantee they'll like you. Then after the gig and the first audition you'll have a lot more infomation to base your decision on. .
this. offer to cover the gig with the band you know, and then audition for the other one and get a clear idea of what you will be dealing with. i'll echo what others have said tho, if you don't like the songs now its unlikely you ever will.
23.
A 100MB Zip disk would only store about 10 pictures from a decent DSLR these days!
not even that, my DSLR exports high quality raw files at 35mb each my dad bought a pc with a 10gb hard drive and zip drive as selling points, my phone by comparison comes with 16gb as standard... oh how times have changed
