  1. Board width is 63mm at the 20th fret if that helps.
  2. Does the preamp fit on a Stingray control plate?

I'm sure he would do you a basschat discount @Rich and knock £200 or so off the asking price?

...and the benefit of paying the extra money for a pro players former bass is that you'll automatically be as good as them...

  3. Christ, I paid far less than that for it brand new.
  4. Westfield 'Thunderbird'-style bass guitar. NOW £80. Originally fitted with chrome hardware, but I have replaced this with black.... bridge, tuners, jack plate, toggle switch and knobs. Looks loads better IMHO. When I bought it the electrics were in a right old state, so I have completely overhauled them -- the jack socket has been moved to the body edge and the controls are now V/V/T with pickup selector toggle switch. The kitchen scales show its weight as 9lb 7.5oz. The body has its share of dings and dents but they are all very minor. The front of the body is flawless. It didn't have a truss rod cover fitted when I bought it, but I will try to find one that fits. The strap buttons are currently Schaller straplock type, but these will be replaced with ordinary buttons. EDIT: in the pics there's a couple of screws missing from the pickguard. These have be replaced. It sounds great and plays well, has the usual T-bird neck dive of course. It's been fun and scratched my T-bird itch, but ultimately it's surplus to requirements, last in first out etc -- the important thing is that it's leaving in a much, much better state than it arrived. I'd have liked to get back what it owes me, but at this price I'm not even getting that As it's a bolt-on neck, it would make the ideal basis for an Ox-style Fenderbird... I'm half tempted to do it myself, but I still probably wouldn't use it. And anyway, it plays just fine as it is, there's nowt wrong with the current neck. Collection is welcome from my home near Bristol, the kettle will be on. Alternatively I am happy to meet up within a reasonable radius (e.g. Chippenham). Cash only in either case. Straight sale only, not looking for trades unless you want to swap it for a Wal 5 string Sorry, but I will not courier it under any circumstances. I don't have the packaging materials and there are too many horror stories at the moment.

  6. Is your dad Roger Whittaker? No, because you would have mentioned it if he was. Therefore, by your own arguments, either your dad didn't whistle anything, or whistling does not in fact come from the aforementioned beardy crooner. Either way, you are definitely not right, and have thus self-invalidated your entire argument. QED. Or something.
  7. Whistling also came from my dad (and from me, I seem to have inherited it). There's a link to Roger Whittaker in that, on one particularly memorable car journey with my folks, my dad whistled 'The Last Farewell' all the way from Reading to Northampton. 2 hours. Two. Hours.
  8. Zombie quote Blimey that takes me back. I had a Delta rig for a while -- 300w head (I couldn't afford the 600) with a 1x15 cab and a 2x8 on top. Good sound but never seemed particularly loud, and oh my word that 15 was a heavy old beast. Massively deep too (dimensions, not sound). There's a great quote from Chris May in this thread:
  9. Likewise, my main loyalty is Elixirs. They're on everything, even my Tanglewood acoustic bass. Other than that, I do have three Genz-Benz amps (Neo Pak 3.5, Shuttle 6.0 and Shuttle 9.2) but that's only because I haven't sold the 6.0 yet. The Neo-Pak is currently serving as the house live rig at my mate's studio. I could quite fancy one of the G-B neo 2x12s. Obviously if I had the money I would have a house full of Shukers and Wals...

  11. Soul/pop/party band: Sire V7 5 string, Shuker 5 string. Ska band: "skabass" (modified J) 4 string, Westone Thunder 1A 4 string. All basses have Elixir rounds. Same rig and FX board for both bands. Amp models in the FX do much of the tone shaping. I used to use the V7 for the ska band, but the two 4 stringers just sound... well... angrier I have a similar rack that does exactly the same thing
  12. I agree Dave, I preferred the tone he was getting from the Pedulla. Is it my imagination or does the section starting at 0:45 sound like Geddy playing his Wal?
  13. ^^ This. I had the same problem with my Wal many many years ago... after reading a similar piece of advice, I dropped the polepieces away from the strings and it made a huge difference. Definitely worth a try.
  14. Si the OldGit played in a superb barn dance/ceilidh band called the Jellied Reels... I depped on bass with them one evening and Si played his saxes and didgeridu(!) all evening. Si knew perfectly well that I hate taking bass solos... so predictably, half way through one of the tunes he turned and pointed at me and with a massive grin yelled "BASS SOLO!!!". Git.

I'm certainly finding that a P sound sits loads better in the ska band than my Sire V7 Jazz-alike ever has. Ska doesn't need finesse, just balls. My Thunder 1A really fits the bill, as does my butchered ex-Jazz which I'm sure everyone is tired of seeing by now. If I was to get another new bass now, it would be a 5 as I do miss that fat string, but it would definitely have a P in the neck.
  16. Yesterday I bought a Nepalese winter woolly hat. It has dreadlocks. This has pleased me immensely.

My dad had one vaguely similar, made of yak wool, from visiting Bhutan.  The locks are to direct rain away from the body, I think.

  20. I don't think so. He's hitting some very low notes and that bottom string is pretty heavy.
