    Ditto.
  2. You forgot: If cutting suddenly becomes more sluggish & difficult, stop and move panel further out from the edge of your workbench, which now has a 1" slot sawn into it.

    Pat testing

In 35 years of gigging, I've been told by two venues that my gear must be PAT tested. Neither time did they actually check, not even a cursory glance at the stickers on the plugs.

  5. A rummage around in the old spares box (more like a spares crate these days) has come up with a single Schaller J neck pickup, looks like the one pictured below. Huge great big polepieces like a Seymour 1/4 pounder, measures 13K on the meter. Yowch. I'm going to pop this big boy into the bass and see what it's like. If it sounds good, I won't need to go to the huge faff of putting in the split P. EDIT: Old pickups hooked out, big fat Schaller installed. Oh. My. GOD this thing is brutal. Just what it needed So now I’m off to the garage to rustle up a bridge pickup shaped bit of wood and some filler

  7. Actually... I really like that. I've always had a massive soft spot for Explorer-shape basses.

  9. Awesome service from Strings Direct again this week. Ordered at 11am on Friday, landed on my doormat 11am Saturday.

    EDIT: originally said 11pm. D'oh.

Ah!!! Easily done!! I think strings direct are based near Southend, not far from me, they've always been my first port of call for strings too 👍👍

  10. Further update: Last night was its gig debut and it sounded great. The band love it. However, I didn't go anywhere near the bridge pickup all night and can't imagine that I'd ever need it for this sort of music... so now I'm thinking, fill the bridge hole and change the neck pup out for a split P a la Mark Hoppus... and maybe even a mudbucker right up by the neck for those fat reggae tones?
  11. The DR Black Beauties on my ska Jazz (not for much longer) are the worst strings I think I've ever used. The G was dull straight out of the pack, the replacement string I eventually got was the same, and they're going dead already after just two rehearsals. And they sound crap too. The only thing in their favour is that they look good. New set of Elixirs in the post as I write.

I absolutely love them. Use them on all my fave basses. Really surprised to read this. I also like that they retain their tone for so long and last ages with little tarnishing. All a matter of personal choice of course and Lord of the strings is a kosher provider I guess. They defo look cool too (I know I am a tart ha ha)

Agree. Plus don't care for the feel of them and, unless they've changed, the coating insulates them from ground. They do look cool though.

Elixirs on there now, all is right with the world.

      *sigh of relief*

  12. I've just been onto Strings Direct's site and luckily for me, the Elixir set I wanted -- four string set, 45-105 steel -- were the only ones showing as in stock. I really hope whatever import issues there are get sorted soon.

  14. That disappointing moment when a name bassist whom you befriended and greatly admired chooses to belittle you on Farcebook when you take issue with their alarmist vaxx-skeptic views.

Closing that door with a heavy heart.
