  1. Si the OldGit played in a superb barn dance/ceilidh band called the Jellied Reels... I depped on bass with them one evening and Si played his saxes and didgeridu(!) all evening. Si knew perfectly well that I hate taking bass solos... so predictably, half way through one of the tunes he turned and pointed at me and with a massive grin yelled "BASS SOLO!!!". Git.

I'm certainly finding that a P sound sits loads better in the ska band than my Sire V7 Jazz-alike ever has. Ska doesn't need finesse, just balls. My Thunder 1A really fits the bill, as does my butchered ex-Jazz which I'm sure everyone is tired of seeing by now. If I was to get another new bass now, it would be a 5 as I do miss that fat string, but it would definitely have a P in the neck.
  3. Yesterday I bought a Nepalese winter woolly hat. It has dreadlocks. This has pleased me immensely.

My dad had one vaguely similar, made of yak wool, from visiting Bhutan.  The locks are to direct rain away from the body, I think.

  4. Almost There - Level 42
  5. Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien - Edith Piaf
  6. My only purchase this year was a tiny Swiff tuner and I am completely whelmed by it. Perfect for my needs.
  7. I don't think so. He's hitting some very low notes and that bottom string is pretty heavy.
  8. Jimmy Johnson's tone on this is just gorgeous. Lovely solo and not a single slap.
  9. Our dear mate Si the OldGit used to so frequently ask for "more baritone in the monitor" (always politely, needless to say) that it became a standing joke in the band. The engineer would ask what we wanted in the foldback, Dave would answer "bass and vocals in the drum fill, keys saxes and vocals in the horn monitors, and you know what Simon wants..." and we'd all shout "MORE BARITONE!"
  10. ^^This. I suspect Fender themselves would be quite astonished if a single one of those ever ends up at a gig being played to an audience.
  11. My Blue Heaven - Walter Donaldson/George A. Whiting
  12. Love the look of your set list. Alas I'm busy for too many of the dates to make it viable.
  13. Bítching primadonna idiots wouldn't last very long in either of my bands. We're all too old to suffer fools.
  14. I haven't bought a single note of recorded music this year, new or otherwise. I hang my head in shame.
  15. Fade to Grey - Visage
  16. Whitey on the Moon - Gil Scott-Heron
  17. Making Plans for Nigel - XTC
  18. Personally I've always found EQ to be the answer.
  19. Yes he does it probably doesn't help that the bodies of the old series 1 Jaydees are huuuuge they always did look massive on him, even back in the early 80s when he was full of muscles. I had exactly the opposite experience... the SMX is still my favourite pre-amp ever by an absolute mile, but I wouldn't take an S6 head if it was free.
  20. Ten Tiny Fingers - The Proclaimers [pedant]the title should of course have been "Eight Tiny Fingers And Two Tiny Thumbs"[/pedant]
  21. Saturday Night Fish Fry - Louis Jordan
  22. My mate has an old horsebox (a towed one though) that he uses to transport his PA. Cheaper than a Transit!
  23. Breakfast in America - Supertramp
  24. Would love to give this a whirl. Did they perhaps miss a trick by not incorporating a DI out?
  25. Joy: realising that Crich Tramway Museum is only half an hour down the road from my holiday let. :D

Heartbreak: finding that yesterday was its last open day this year. :(

I looked up the Heights of Abraham earlier... guess what, they closed for the year on Sunday too

Today, had a lovely walk round the Derwent reservoirs. Tomorrow, it's off to Manchester on the train to visit the Science and Industry Museum.

Starting to think I'm cursed :(

Ok, so we took a trip to the MoSI today... I particularly wanted to see the old station & goods shed, and the aerospace building.

Yup, you guessed it. Both exhibits are closed.

      FFS.

Lovely spot Rich, I'm only 40 minutes away but rarely go.  Try and take in Chatsworth if you've not been before
