This is me also, except that I do have a compressor in the amp's FX loop. The pedal board is pretty small, there's a volume pedal and tuner but the main thing I use is the Zoom MS60-B multistomp. I use it for tone-shaping mainly as it gives me good sounds for old-skool ska/reggae/Motown (using an Ampeg flip-top model) and also for hard edged stuff e.g. Rancid (using a cranked SVT model), plus I've got chorus and octaver patches too. I've put in the hours tweaking the two modelled patches and they sound pretty bloody good to me, I think I will be using more of this in the future. Admittedly it spends most of its time on 'bypass' though The only other thing on the board is a Mammoth clone I made which is really only there to fill a space

Does the relative stiffness or even the resonance of the cabinet wood have any bearing? Is there any advantage to be had by one particular wood -- e.g. any advantage to using ply rather than MDF, apart from it being lighter?

My practice/rehearsal amp is a 1x12 Behringer 60 watt combo that cost me 30 quid. My band is a 12-piece including horns and whatnot, and the wee Behr is quite loud enough to keep up with it.

You forgot: If cutting suddenly becomes more sluggish & difficult, stop and move panel further out from the edge of your workbench, which now has a 1" slot sawn into it.

A rummage around in the old spares box (more like a spares crate these days) has come up with a single Schaller J neck pickup, looks like the one pictured below. Huge great big polepieces like a Seymour 1/4 pounder, measures 13K on the meter. Yowch. I'm going to pop this big boy into the bass and see what it's like. If it sounds good, I won't need to go to the huge faff of putting in the split P. EDIT: Old pickups hooked out, big fat Schaller installed. Oh. My. GOD this thing is brutal.
