Horace Panter, Bedders and Dave Steele (and subsequently Mark King, a bit of a sideways jump I know ) were the first guys to really inspire me to pick up a bass, so I guess if you follow that line back you could say that my ultimate influences are the original Jamaican ska bassists from the 60s, and later reggae (I'm sure Family Man will have been in there somewhere too). Not a Beatle in sight there if you ask me.

I suppose any of the artists at the vanguard of a popular genre can be said to be particularly influential, e.g. the hip hop pioneers (Afrika Bambaataa etc)

It wasn't terribly big, but was man enough for vox, keys, kick drum, etc. We all used to pitch in with setting up, crashing it, etc. After a while the singer announced that he was going to be taking an extra cut from gig income because as he saw it he was effectively hiring his PA to the band. He dropped the idea after bitter complaints from the rest of us and threats to leave from at least two. A few weeks later he said that his wife had been asked if we would play at the leisure centre she worked at... and that consequently he would be taking a "finder's fee" from the income as it was his wife who had got us the gig. Why yes, the band [i]did[/i] go tits up shortly after that, however did you guess?
