1. The way I see it is -- Just because you're a} female & cute, and/or b} sharing domestic arrangements with someone well-known, it doesn't automatically mean you'll be successful and it is a bit daft to argue that this is the case. Likewise, just because you have or had a gig with someone of Beck or Hancock's calibre, it doesn't automatically mean you are great. There is a whole universe of difference between really good and great. So -- talented, yes. Very good, yes. But great? No.
  2. The Buzzard has always been my favourite of the more left-field bass shapes... I'd take one of these over a flying V or a BC Rich any day. Wouldn't want the Warwick version though, not after seeing what JAE did to one of their Buzzards...
  3. I agree. And also:
I'd say she's a very good player.....she's got a long way to go to be great.
This. Her gender makes no difference at all.

    Got wood?
Oh rly? I always thought it was a Status. Far too crisp and clean sounding compared to the rest of his Jaydee sounds. Having had various Status basses over the years and played plenty of Jaydees, I've never found them to sound similar at all and would have put a months wages on that being a Status. Probably best I avoided the bookmakers then!
I can't speak for the Woolwich and Chippenham gigs on Physical Presence, but he definitely played a JD at the Reading gig. I know this as I was there
  5. The first thing I'd try would be anything with 'Yamaha' on the headstock. Consistently excellent instruments that offer near unbeatable value-for-money, IMHO.
  6. If I went to see some chaps play a bit of music and all they did was to kick me up the bottom, I would jolly well want my money back.
  7. My bass soundcheck is usually You Can Leave Your Hat On. Plenty of sustained low notes, a couple of little flourishes up the dusty end for the full range, and a couple of pops to make sure it's snappy enough or not too harsh. My mic soundcheck is usually My Old Man's A Dustman
I hate band sound checks and refuse to do them. If it's a usual gig, it's all done in the first 15 seconds of the first verse. Me on my own? turn on, play four notes, turn down master, put bass on stand, wonder why drummer is still setting kit up and guitarist is frantically swapping patch leads in all combinations.
My band has 13 members... can you imagine the sonic car-crash that would ensue if we refused to do soundchecks?

  9.
Example for fast playing but awefull sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0CeJppd_20
Oh good god, that is shocking
  10.
Latest addition to the (now Roscoe only) family…
So what happened to the Spitfire and the RIM? Or have I been asleep and missed something..?
  11. No, i meant successful players who seem to revel in their inability to play. I get angry with players who are proud of being really crap and seem determined to stay that way, yet still end up as successful 'musicians'.
  12.
My underlying point was that musicians are often willing to listen to and pick up things from someone with great technique even if the music isn't to their tastes, and then go on to integrate that technique into their own music in a way they do like. Not just a case of "Ooh, look at the freak show".
Excellent point well made sir.
  13.
When you see bassists who haven't spent hours and hours working on fringe techniques like slapping become successful, are you jealous of them?
Not at all, no. Should i be? However, if we change the wording slightly...
When you see bassists who haven't spent any time working on anything and almost seem to revel in their lack of ability become successful, are you jealous of them?
Hell yes. Actually, not so much jealous as angry.
  14.
As far as I'm concerned, anything less than 19mm is "narrow" and anything less than 17.5mm is "unplayable".
Yup, me too. I wouldn't even consider a 5 with less than 19 at the bridge. And I have small hands and very short fingers too. Don't write off a wide spacing just because you think it'll be uncomfortable. You might be surprised.
  15.
and what's with the CAPS in the thread title?
Aye. Sorry, but the caps had to go. I don't like being shouted at

  19. John's right; if we had a tenner for every time we'd received a complaint along the lines of "{user} has hijacked my FS thread and is wrecking my chances of a sale, can you have a word please?", then our secret mountaintop headquarters would have a lot more priceless works of art on the walls than it currently does. This is precisely why the rule exists, and to be honest I can't see why it's such a contentious one. All it means is writing a PM rather than a public post.
  20. OK, so whatever happened to this book?? Last heard from over a year ago! There's still a waiting list as far as I'm aware.
  21. I've sung lead and BVs in a number of bands over the years so I don't find it too difficult (although as has been said, it depends on the complexity of the bass part). The really difficult thing is talking and playing... It's taken years but i'm finally getting to grips with it.
  22.
MB1. Perhaps the Landlords son Ziggy plays guitar?
And his daughter Sheena is a punk rocker.
  23.
Yeah, the last one of those that came to work managed to threaten our entire reception team!
Really?? How? Do tell, this sounds fascinating/horrifying
  24. A gorgeous Pangborn Warlord back in '86. Beautiful bass, stunning sound. Mind you, if i'd bought that, I wouldn't have ended up with my Wal
