1. The guy's a space cadet. In the nicest way Good to know that he's still doing his thing.
2. To my mind, since his sad death Ox's name has been subjected to a whole string of the most cynical ker-ching. These are more of the same. Tasteless and sad.
3. New bass notwithstanding... am I the only bugger in the world who has never 'got' Les Claypool, has never understood all the fuss about his playing, and has really really disliked all the Primus stuff I've ever heard? Years ago I bought Sailing The Seas Of Cheese, to see what all the hoo-ha was about. Played it twice. Hated it. Left it to gather dust for 18 months. Played it again. Hated it more. Sold it. Is it just me?
4.
List price for the reissue {SG3000} is £3,000 and up. Good used examples of originals can easily sell for £1,500.
Really?? Blimey, I remember a time many years ago when they were nearly bin-material. Bloody wish I'd bought one then!
5. I'm all in favour of everyone's right to an opinion. But there are opinions, and then there's "I don't like it, therefore it must be sh*t".
I have to say, the wood working looks even worse than on a Carl Thompson!
I can only assume you've seen this bass in the flesh, or at least seen some proper close-up shots of it? 'Cos I've got pretty good eyesight, but I'm blowed if I can make out the actual quality of the build from those tiny pics.
6. A bit OT, but I couldn't not comment...
Reh before the wedding was cancelled, showed up at the gig with the bass part nailed feeling very pleased with myself. As soon as we started playing it was obvious our normally reliable drummer had just not bothered - boy was I pissed. Having said that, the couple were delighted. Interestingly we are having huge debates whether we should reh so often or not. A vocal dep we used at the weeked said at the break, I love playing with you guys, you are so well rehearsed and make my job really easy. S
To be frank, if your band are playing weddings then you are duty bound to be as polished and well-rehearsed as you possibly can be. Max kudos to you for taking the time to practice the tune thoroughly, but your drummer needs a kick up the arse for not bothering to learn that couple's first dance song & I don't blame you in the slightest for being pissed off with him. I'd have been livid. OK, so the couple were delighted this time. But what if they'd spotted his slackness and been annoyed by it? How would he feel if the most important dance of his life was spoiled because someone made a pig's breakfast of playing it 'cos he hadn't learned it?
7. Hartke's gone, Headrush still up for grabs. C'mon chaps, it's a bargain.
8.
You're a BC staffer, member number 2 in fact, which makes your narrow-minded attitude of how the instrument should and shouldn't be played ("egotistical when the whole band is used as a vehicle for the bass" and "I don't think the bass works as a solo instrument") frankly quite frightening!
And of course it's a well-known fact that BC staffers are not allowed to have, or express, opinions on anything.
9. Used them for years until I had some QC issues too... a whole series of duff A strings. I changed brands, and have never looked back.
10. Sennheiser HD280 pro. Recommended without hestitation. Not hugely cheap, but worth every last shekel.
11.
I like the sound of getting the Black HB Jag and put another HB in.
Do it. And make a build diary of it, with some sound samples. The Jag shape has always reminded me of those occasional sad sights you see on eBay (usually in that German comedy store), where some muppet has come home from the pub and taken a bandsaw to his Jazz in order to make it 'unique'.
12. Plus the one. Never been overkeen on the Jag shape TBH. 209 quid is an absurd bargain though.
13.
I've dealt with them a couple of times for replacement valves and can thoroughly agree with the OPs comments. These guys know their valves, are enthusiastic about their subject matter and are a pleasure to deal with.
Yup, similar experience here.
14. The basses really are lovely, but this is definitely the star of the show for me. Stunning.
15. Japan, 'Oil On Canvas'. Mick Karn stealing the show.
16.
Overall, I enjoy BGM. It's not perfect, but what alternatives are there?
+1. I used to automatically buy Bass Pamphlet, sorry Player whenever I saw it in Smith's, but last time I flicked through it first and none of the few bits I could see between the adverts appealed in the slightest. So I walked away. A lack of competition doesn't excuse a lack of care though. I hate to say it, but Bassist was a far more polished product.
17. Paypal preferred, cheque OK though. No trades ta. The near-legendary Akai Headrush E1 Tap Delay/Tape Echo Simulator/Looping Recorder The Headrush has 3 modes: Loop Recording: can record a single loop up to 23.8 seconds long or an overdubbed loop up to 11.9 seconds. Tap Delay: the maximum tap tempo delay time is 23.8 seconds. Tape Echo: designed to simulate a 4 head analogue tape delay ("Copicat"). Each 'head' has its own output, so you can send multiple signals from the Headrush to multiple amps or mixer channels. Mint condition. Only ever used for a bit of experimentation at home, has never left the house. Boxed, with original power supply and blurb. £SOLD. Hartke VXL Attack tone-shape preamp What they say: "Hartke's VXL Bass Attack Pedal is a tone-shaping pre-amp that doubles as a direct box, featuring the famous Hartke Shape Circuitry. The two-button style stomp box has a three band EQ for adjustments of Bass, Treble, and Bright controls, plus a Harmonic control that emulates the warmth and drive of a tube so well that you'll never want to turn it off. The Hartke Bass Attack Pedal gives you the ability to finally get the sound you want, and everything in between." What I say: totally unused. In fact, it's still sealed in the original plastic bag. Thomann want £85 plus postage for these, but you can get this one for £SOLD.
18. Chorus & overdrive both sold pending the usual, octaver still available.
19. If you mean battery, then yes
