(stock pic) Not for nothing was this baby the SWR flagship for some years (until its big brother came along!). It's a brilliant amp and I love it, but 900 watts is far more than I need and the weight is getting a bit much for me, and I'm GASsing for a new lightweight thingy. So she's got to go. There's a bit of road rash, true -- some scrapes here & there, including on the front handles, none of it is my doing however as it's lived in my rack since day 1 -- but operationally it's perfect and boy is it loud..! Unfortunately I do not have the channel-change footswitch though. It gets quite warm in use, they all do, but contrary to what some people might suggest it has never overheated while I've been using it. To fund the GAS I needed nearly £500, so 480 means I'm close to being out of pocket. Shipping will be, well, whatever it costs or if you're close to Bristol you are welcome to collect. Or I can arrange to deliver to Swindon, Reading or Birmingham as I go to those places fairly regularly. UK price for these babies is at least £1500, so mine's a total steal. From the SWR site: "The SM-900 has been one of the most requested bass amplifiers for concert stages and studios worldwide since its introduction in 1991 - and it continues to be the benchmark by which other bass amplification systems are judged. The 900 combines the sweet, warm SWR tube preamp tone with two power modules for the option of 900 watts in bridged mode (400 per side in stereo). The dual three-band semi-parametric EQs can be can be combined into a single six-band configuration - offering more tonal control than is available in many professional quality studio consoles." Tube preamp Active and passive inputs Limiter 'Aural Enhancer' Shelving bass and treble controls 2 switchable 3-band semi-parametric EQs - can be used as 2 channels or combined into a single 6-band EQ Rack mountable (2U) Stereo and Mono Effects Loop Balanced XLR Output with Line or Direct Mode switch, plus ground lift & variable pad Bridge/Mono Mode: 900 Watts @ 4 Ohms {EDIT: just noticed, mine says 900W @ 8 ohms. Weird.} Stereo Mode (per side): 400 watts @ 4 Ohms 240 watts @ 8 Ohms 144 watts @ 16 Ohms (minimum load = 2 Ohms) Height: 3.5" (8.9 cm) (2U) Width: 19" (48.3 cm) Depth: 13.75" (34.9 cm) Weight: 35 lbs. (15.9 kg)

The best 5-string superJ I've played is P-T-P's Lakky DJ, with a Bart (I think?) preamp in it. The best 4-string is CK's Celinder, by a country mile.

I love where I live, but on occasions I just hate being so far from London. This is one of those occasions. I would have given arms & legs to have been there.

What work do you carry out on your bass at home
Rich replied to d-basser's topic in General Discussion
1) What kind of maintenance do you carry out on your instruments at home/gigs? Setups, electronics, minor woodwork, most things except major woodwork and finishing. 2) What position is it easiest to have the instrument in for these actions? (vertical, horizontal, at an angle?) Horizontal, on workbench. 3) Are there any tasks you currently carry out where you find it hard to securely orientate the instrument in an ideal working position? Not really. -
Fender Jazz, Candy Apple Red with matching h/stock, with white pearl plate and chrome neck ashtray. Ohhhhhh yesssssssss.

On the forum at 4.53pm. Did he get in contact at all? I'm guessing not... Go the legal route, I reckon. No mucking about. A letter demanding payment, and then (assuming that doesn't get a result) straight to the Sheriff. IMO it doesn't matter if it's £173 or £17.30, it's the principle.

Ask him to do one in Bristol, can you..? Ta.
I much prefer Victor's groove playing that his slap playing, it's a shame that a lot of people focus on how fast he can slap rather than his fingerstyle.

Agreed - although ironically I think the same is true of Flea. I much prefer his more melodic playing to his slap playing.
And again, the same is true of Mark King. People focus entirely on his wockity-wockity slap whilst forgetting that his fingerstyle groove playing is superb, plus the fact that he sings and plays - even over some of his most fiendishly complex lines.
None involving the band that I can recall, but I did see a squaddie have a charge at someone from right across the room..he went wailing at this guy like a banshee at full pelt but didn't see the knee-level height glass coffee table in front of him and that poleaxed him ....straight down onto his face
I want to see that on youtube
I witnessed Pete Way trying to keep Phil Mogg and Michael Schenker apart during a UFO gig in Manchester a couple of years back. Schenker was totally pissed as usual, and Mogg took exception to his lousy playing, and so tried to hit him with the mic stand. Only Pete Way and his Thunderbird could keep them apart. Very funny.
And that

There are three. 1 - Playing to 3000 people on a gorgeous summer night in Stroud. 2 - It Bites at the Astoria on the Once Around The World tour. 3 - The Proms in the Park at Berkeley Castle some years ago... the orchestra played a stunning rendition of Elgar's 'Nimrod', when they hit the crescendo at the end, I am not ashamed to say I cried. Just beautiful.

Gig tonight but feeling poorly. Help me get through it.
Rich replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
Got a gig tonight which thankfully, is only a 30 minute set. Been feeling ill all week and was actually off work Tuesday. Feel a little better not but still have chest cough, sort through, runny nose, aches and pain, headache, feel sick and no energy at all. Been drinking lots of water and energy drinks, plus ibuprofen, lemsips and strepsils. Any other suggestions for a quick fix to make me feel better and get me through tonights gig??
When manflu strikes, I always reach for my DIY lemsip... 2 tsp of runny honey, 2 tsp lemon juice, 3 disprin, boiling water, and a good slug of whisky. Not overly convenient for a gig, true, but it always makes me feel a bit better. -
I saw Cass Lewis several times hanging around in the Bass Centre trying gear. He used Peavey at the time and was moving to Trace. He was seriously good. I used to pretend to check out the basses and listen to him. This was just before TTD.
I saw him at the BC around that time too. Was he using that outrageous pink fretless Jazz when you saw him?

Encores (the last few numbers in your set, not the brand)
Anyone ever have one of their basses defretted... I mean a good job, no home-made crap.
Yup. I pulled all the frets form the neck of my Yamaha RBX765A, and Jon Shuker was kind enough to finish it all off when he built my bass. He did a beautiful job, as you'd expect from a good luthier. The bass has worked out very nicely, plenty of mwah. It has a rosewood board, so I've tried to avoid too much wear by putting some nice slippery Elixirs on. I can't stand the feel of flats.
