Line 6 Relay G30 Digital Wireless Guitar System
Rich replied to dave_bass5's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the review AREA, looking forward to hearing more about it! I've copied your review to this thread in the Reviews section... if you have any further comments to add after your practice tonight, could you update that thread too? Thanks! -
Mini review by AREA, from this thread: Digital Wireless got me.... Here´s a short Review. At First, let me say I´m impressed. As I said, when I come home the Parcel was waiting for me. The G30 is real "Plug & Play" nothing you have to adjust or something. Just connect the receiver to the Power Supply, wich is included of course. What I like is, that you can power the Receiver with a Daisy Chain Cable also, when it´s added to your Pedal Board. The Receiver is very light. You feel it´s Plastic. Line 6 says ist not just Plastic, it´s Polycarbonate, wich is more sturdy. Time will tell, but what will you do to, or with the Receiver? Nothing. You won´t step on it or something. Little green Led Chains informes you about the Transmitting Status/Quality/Level/Strenght and about the Battery Status. With one of the little silver Sliders you can select One of Six selectable Channels, with the other you can simmulate "Cable Tone" of a 15 or 30 Feet long Cable. Just have checked it very fast and it seems, that you loose some little Highs with Cable Tone, but you have to listen very exactly. The Bodypack Transmitter is also "Bonehead-Simple". Two Signal LEDs show you that you a.) got an Audio Signal and b.) about the Battery Status. You also got a little silver Slider to select one of the six Channels. The Transmitter requieres two AA Size Batteries or Akkus. What I like about the Bodypack Transmitter is, that you can use every Mono Patch Cable to connect the Transmitter to your Bass or Guitar. You don´t have a special and expencive Cable or need one to buy if you like one as a Backup. Just use a Patch Cable in good Quality and about 50cm Length. By the Way, the Cable wich is delivered with the System, is a little bit stiff. It´s not the one you see on the Picture below. Okay. So far so good. Plugged in my passive Fender 5-String Bass and the first Thing you notice is: It´s absolut deadly quiet. You hear absolute nothing, if you don´t play. It´s like playing with Cable and it sounds like playing with Cable. I can´t hear any Difference. Same Dynamics, same Signal Quality, same Output Level. I´ve checked and compared it 2-3 Times. I can´t hear any Difference. Really. Tone is as punchy, warm as played through Cable and also the Low B shows no Compression like it does, if you play with analogue UHF Systems. Then I went through my whole Appartement. From Living Room to Bedroom, Kitchen. Through 2-3 Walls. I still have had a Signal. No Drop Outs. Must be enough for every Stage we´re playing on. That´s my first Impression and I have to say: I like it. We´ve got Practice this Evening and of Course I will test it in our Bandroom too. But until now I lke to say: Recommended!!!

Pretty bass, ghastly tone. But yep, it is a deeply personal thing.
I cried when they played Awaken.
Yeah, it does that to me too. I still have some of the confetti from the Cardiff gig some years back.
I'm the kind of guy that hoards bubble wrap and foam and boxes though! Makes it cheaper to post
Heh, me too. You would not believe the number of varying jiffy bags and small cardboard boxes I have accumulated over the years. I had to send a Sei bass via courier once, and only had a skinny gig bag to send it in... I was paranoid about it breaking so I wrapped it in an entire roll of bubble wrap with a thick layer of cardboard round the outside. It looked like an Egyptian mummy by the time I'd finished, but arrived safely. Apparently the packaging bore unmistakeable signs of rough handling in transit, despite my repeated 'Fragile, please handle with care' scrawlings all over it. I think some of these people go out of their way to bust things sometimes. Then there was the amp I bought which arrived in a 2U Stagg case simply wrapped in thin brown paper... needless to say, the case was only fit for the skip by the time Parcelfarce had finished with it.

I never go anywhere else for my strings these days. Blimmin marvellous people. -
IMO, pain is your body's way of telling you to stop doing whatever it is that's hurting, before it does some real damage. The way I see it is: No Pain, [s]No Gain[/s] Good.

It all makes sense, certainly, and for me at least funky = good. Although having said that, the term 'funk' is used in as broad a sense as 'rock'. True funk, for me, is everybody on the ONE -- James Brown, Parliament, make my funk the p-funk y'awl 'Funky' can encompass all manner of stuff though, it all depends what floats your boat. Do you want to stretch the definition as far as Chic style 'disco'ish funk? Where it starts to get tricky for you is:
and just as important people will want to hear
The average punter will never have heard Machine Gun, or that damn fine Stretch tune either. Or the majority of James Brown's or Clinton's repertoires for that matter.

+1 for the 90s being a low point. Certainly was for me anyway, musically and otherwise!

Using 'Toast' as representative of Paul Young's career is a bit like suggesting that Stevie Wonder's sole contribution to music is I Just Called To Say I Love You. Anyone remember the Q-Tips... 600 gigs in just two years? Still, it's not surprising to see this turning into a 'The Stuff I Like Is Great And Everything Else Is Crap' thread. We were about due for another one.
I think the 80s gets way too much stick, having been around since the 60s and listening to music all that time, I can honestly say that the 80s were the best for me by far. OK the fashions were strange, but in retrospect what fashions aren't strange? H&C's Labour Of Love, great song, thanks for reminding me of them.
A-flippin-men old chap. I loved the 80s, sure there was some crap music but oh man there were some belters too. And that H&C track is one of them. Pino... we are not worthy.
Back to Level 42- no slap but this has to be one of the most haunting tunes for anyone who had their heart broken in the late 80s- sorry to open those old wounds again
For me, it was this one. Old wounds notwithstanding, this is in my top 5 favourite songs of all time and way up there on the Songs I Wish I'd Written list.

It's nearly 40 miles away, but it's only just down the road from the office so I go straight from work.
Wal 5 string
Oh yes, good call. Santa, please keep the DJ5 and bring me a Wal 5 instead...

Lakky DJ5, candy apple red with pearly white plate, rosewood board with blocks, matching CAR headstock. And red side LEDs
It's really quite difficult to get those sounds out of a bass - because it wasn't designed to do that job.
The bass guitar was originally designed to do two jobs -- 1) to deliver accurately intonated notes, and 2) be louder & smaller than a double bass. That's it. No picks, no slaps, no glassy top end, no tonal variation, nothing. How many of us here can say that we have never, ever asked more of it than its original brief?
Neither of these do much for me. That's not just because I can't do it myself - there's plenty out there that I can't do (lets face it - practically all of it) that does do something for me. This simply does not.
Fair enough. At least you didn't write it off on the basis of it looking weird.
With all that fiddling with the D-tuner wouldn't he be better off with a five string?
Watch him carefully -- that's four detuners on the headstock and at least two at the bridge. Good luck in finding a 5-string (or in fact an anything-string) capable of all the different tuning combinations possible with that lot (I can't be arsed to do the maths) For anyone not put off by his tunings or his trousers, there's a good interview here.

If I only liked or listened to stuff that really relates to what I do, my playlists would be extremely short.
