Jazz Bass 'Cumbersome' and 'A Blast From The Past'
Rich replied to bremen's topic in General Discussion
What a big girl's blouse. -
Amp only for me, the cabs are non-SWR. Does that count? An SM-900 that I bought late last year. The sound is to die for, and my amp GAS is currently stone dead. Apologies for the truly shocking photograph.
Defo - she played on everything Motown apparently.
No, she just played on everything. Ever. You know that Entwistle bloke who used to supposedly play with the Who? That was her with a sticky on beard. And that Jocko bloke? Her in a wig. Anthony Jackson? Kaye, fat suit, boot polish. True.

What does adding a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 15 do to the sound?
Rich replied to Linus27's topic in Amps and Cabs
This has been discussed in the past, although searching for said discussion is a pain in the arse. If memory serves, I believe the word from those in the know was that mixing speaker sizes does not necessarily have a beneficial effect & the best results are had from keeping a uniform speaker size. If I'm wrong with this recollection, please correct me! Certainly from personal experience, my rig sounds loads better with two 1x15s than it did with a 1x15 plus a 2x10 -- but YMMV. As the man said, suck it and see! -
anyone got a recommendation for an easy intro for me to check out?
I'd start off with Heavy Weather and keep going from there. Enjoy!
I find both unlistenable :-( Does this make me a bad person?
Not at all. No more than my incredibly low opinion of Cliff Burton makes me a bad person.
technically amazing, but apart from that, just sounds like fret w*nking to me.
Fretless, surely?

Curate's egg... good in places. Well, more than good. Genius in places. I will never ever tire of things like Havona, A Remark, Teen Town, The Chicken. But some of his work I do find almost unlistenable. Having said that, I still feel that he deserves his hype. Just imagine if he'd got together with Hendrix... I really hope this thread doesn't descend into yet another "jazz is sh1t" thing.

Old enough to remember Kerrang! mag being launched. My mate probably still has issue #1 lurking somewhere.

Surely Hayseed Dixie have beaten you to it with the CountryMetal thing?
sounds quite gritty
Yes, but we've got to take it seriously now apparently.

Here it is. There's a Shuttle hiding inside the head, and the cab is actually a 1x12".
Country music is, on the whole, very fine, IMO. Like the old stuff, like the new stuff, like country-rock, like alt-country. 15 years ago, I'd have killed myself for thinking that; but you grow up, and your tastes get broader rather than narrower. Same as I find something to enjoy in blues, metal, reggae, dance, classical ad inf.
Ain't that the truth. If I could show my 15 year old self some of the stuff in my current CD collection, I'd die of shock. In 1980 I'd sooner have poked in my eardrums with a soldering iron than listen to Mozart or Motorhead or Miles Davis.
Now, when it comes to hardcore British country music 'buffs', as they like to call themselves, that's a different story. Detest anything after Slim Whitman, build shrines to Boxcar Willie and drive around in rusty old Yank Barges with Confederate flag stickers. Weasel-featured, long greasy hair, tattoos, scars, ratty little moustaches, prosthetic limbs. And you should see their husbands.
coffee->screen

How many different prefixes can be added to '-core' or '-metal'..?

What was your first bass and why did you start playing?
Rich replied to damo200sx's topic in Bass Guitars
Just like Del Palmer, my first bass was a '64 Hofner Artist II -- I bought mine from my school metalwork teacher for £20. Still got it. It's pretty much unplayable now, but looks as as fck on the wall. Second bass was a Columbus Jazz copy, third bass was my treasured Wal. Started playing because I'd always felt drawn to the bass, ever since I was everso young and at a concert with my folks, and had felt my tummy fluttering because of the low end. I distinctly remember telling my mum that I could feel what that man with the 'guitar' was playing -- dim memory suggests that it was a sunburst Fender of some sort. Initial influences were Tony Butler of Big Country and Dave Steele of The Beat, until one day I saw Mark King on the telly...
I got a Kay 'SG'. Thin bodied, sunburst, and probably short scale. £20 new, from Norman Hackett's in Reading (where I believe Bryan Adams also got his first six string). Rode home to Woodley with it on my back, on my Raleigh Runabout moped, which was a bit naughty, as I was 15 and not yet legal on the road.
Norman Hackett's! On the corner in Caversham, my god that takes me back. I used to live in Shinfield, so the Reading music shops were a regular haunt of mine. I bought my Wal from Hamer's on Oxford Road. -
new baby Doodle (sorry, 'Sally' I believe, eh Rich lol)
Ohhh yes you just KNOW that the name has stuck forever, don't you?
Steve, I like your second idea and your logical approach makes sense.
+1 for the second design. I also v.much like the idea of varying knob size. Stop sniggering at the back there, boy.
Can't do it.In fact i can't even talk or answer a question whilst playing bass.
Don't feel bad about it. Talking whilst playing is MASSIVELY more difficult than singing and playing. Don't know why this should be the case, but it is. I can sing and play quite well, but talk? Nah.
whatever you think of Sting, the verse of this song is an impressive bit of vocal & bass coordination- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnnUDGLnUzE
Blimey, that is good stuff. I think ol' Gordon gets an unfairly harsh press. In a similar vein... whatever you might think of Mark King, this is a very impressive example of the play/sing thing.
