Fret-King Esprit
It's funny that you choose to focus on the Spitfire.
Not really. My point is that the Esprit will appeal to players who would rather give up playing than own an exotic wood custom. Y'know, T-Bird owners and the like.

    Fret-King Esprit

I dare say the Esprit is intended to appeal to the kind of folks who would say your Spitfire is a godawful coffee-table of a bass. Speaking as the owner of a godawful coffee-table myself, I'm not keep on the Esprit either, but then again individual taste is a bizarre thing innit?
  4. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...
  5. Not convinced by the pickup cover, but overall it certainly looks like a v.nice job o' work. What are the woods?
  6. Yup, Wals do fetch silly cash these days. Bought mine in '86, it was 2ndhand then. Now worth approx 3-4 times what I paid for it, judging by recent sales.
  7.
Ah, how to qualify "objectively better"? <snip>
Ladies and gents, the definitive statement on the impossibility of quantifying 'best'. Expressed far better than I ever could have.
  8. Apparently I am 50% Victor Wooten, 25% John Myung, 17% Flea, 8% Pete Wentz (oh puh-LEEze) and 8% Jaco. Rrrrright. Quite how I work out to be 108% of anything is unclear at this time.
  9.
Let just say as a Smith owner/player for the last 5 years I expect to be given the benefit of any doubt over my motives for posting there. I'll PM you with the details.
Me too please. Oh man, you know how much I covet that beautiful fretted 5... oh god, if I could even remotely afford it, I'd take it in a heartbeat...
  10. Aahhhhh. So it's a clever way of calling it 'Memory Man with Stuff'
  11. He's right. Welcome to friendly tolerant multicultural olde merrie England.
  12.
mark king is best, period....
Nope, joint 7th best apparently
  13. What's a hazarai..?
  14.
With the exception of Wunjo and Vintage&Rare, neither of which are part of the company which owns ALL of the others - and which both have excellent customer service. Wunjo even have good prices if you ask for them.
+1, esp. for V&R. I have never found anything other than courtesy in there. Plus of course some hand-bitingly gorgeous exotica.
So, Doctor of the Bass just didn't know the correct question to ask. It's probably something like: 'Could you direct me to the whereabouts of the bass of doom?'. Then they reply: 'Of course, sir, it's so nice to have you with us. Please come this way'.
"Good morning. It's a very nice day." "Yes, but later it is said there will be rain." "Just a shower, I am sure." *locks door* "Very good sir. Follow me through the secret passageway, the Jamerson bass is waiting for you..."
  15.
Can I tell them their sound man instructions Rich? eh, eh? can I eh?
Haha, yeah g'wan... it was a cracker
And then there was the support band of 16 year olds doing great Hendrix stuff who thought it hilarious to have a water fight in the dressing room tent whilst we were on stage .. and I don't think we'd upset them at all, they were just being rock and roll.... all over our stuff ....
Ah yes, the little darlings... I remember that one... driving home in my sweaty stage shirt because my real clothes were too wet to put back on
  16. If you do manage to sell it for $650 (400+ quid?), let me know 'cos mine will then be up for sale immediately
  17. For eletronic components, might be worth having a look here. I've ordered lots of stuff from them, and their costs are very reasonable. Cheaper than Maplin in a lot of cases.
  18. These folks are good too. I've ordered lots of stuff from them in the past, including one of the desktop PSUs.
  19. I'm not going to argue with that top 3 My tie-break votes would be: 05) Marcus Miller (can I vote for Ged too..?) 07) Pino
  20.
I'm not so sure. I see C sharp as the greedy bisexual between C and D.
And that E flat is just gagging for it. The dirty little tramp.
Man, did you watch Saw 2 last night... being thrown in a pit of hypodermic needles to find a key seems a little nasty for my liking...
Oh my god... I have something approching a phobia of needles... if I'd seen that, I think I'd have fainted.
  22.
Agreed. I'd call them up and tell them you'd like to meet up to discuss the future of the band and your place in it. I voted for the beginning of a rehearsal 'cos that's probably the easiest time to get them all in a room together but really, just tell them you want to get them all in a room together to discuss something important. They might have an idea of what the conversation will be about but what's wrong with that?
+1. Don't do it via email, it's really impersonal. One step up from being dumped via text.
  23. IIRC it was destroyed in the fire at his house a few years back, and he hasn't got another one. I think he said that EBMM were reluctant to make another because of all the one-off tooling costs. Would love to be corrected though.

I bet he'd crawl naked over broken glass to get JPJ on board
  25. My top trio, today:

Marcus Miller
Michael Manring
Alain Caron
As for the guys who made me want to pick up the bass in the first place:

Dave Steele (The Beat)
Mark King
Tony Butler
As far as Macca is concerned... OK maybe not the flashest of players all the time, and yes perhaps there's a lot of root-five at times, but as has been said, why not if that's what fits the songs? (I can but add a +1 to MoJoKe's excellent point here: "A really good bass player with great timing and, yes, groove, can be completely invisible, and make the song sound brilliant".) On the other hand, there are lovely melodic lines like Lady Madonna... cracking stuff. He may not be my personal choice as a big influence, but I can definitely understand if he is for some people. Also... Sgt. Pepper's is 'unimaginative'? The birth of the concept album, 'unimaginative'?
